Howard Schmidt, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator, said that such a system will not be a national ID one, but rather a necessary program to create trusted digital ID in order to improve the security of online transactions. Besides, this program is meant to relieve the burden of having to remember multiple usernames and passwords.
It seems like the authorities are not trying to reduce fears of federal intrusion into our everyday lives. The news emerged that the government is going to relieve the burden of having to keep in mind all your usernames and passwords by introducing an Internet ID for all citizens.
National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, or NSTIC, assumes that the country is experiencing a major problem in cyberspace: when people are in the Internet, nobody really knows if individuals or organizations are who they claim to be. Besides, everyone has to remember lots of usernames and passwords for online services, which is so inconvenient that majority of people use the same passwords for all accounts. This, in its turn, literally gives criminals who manage to compromise their passwords the “keys to the kingdom.”
At the same time, Schmidt said that it was not a national ID program, pointing out that the society now needs a cyber world enabling people to confirm their identities securely. Meanwhile, such system will allow them to perform sensitive transactions like banking with minimal disclosure of data and at the same time will let them stay anonymous when blogging. In fact, Howard Schmidt calls such program the “Identity Ecosystem”, highlighting that no-one will be forced to get a digital ID against their will. In addition, the government is not planning to create a central database to store digital IDs.
Well, the project seems rather tame, but the only problem is that the same was said of Social Security numbers, with the government insisting that those would never be used for identification purposes. However, nowadays it is used for identifying people in everything – from their bank account numbers to their monthly utility bills.
In addition, when the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace takes effect, it will be just a matter of time before it becomes impossible to conduct business or interact with websites without a “Trusted Identity.”

They may introduce it, but doesn't mean it will pass. All professional trade organizations say this is going nowhere fast, thankfully. Looks like another dud from the terrorist Obama-Bin-Laden.

after this happens they will want to start tagging our children when there born just another way to keep track of us all
There is one VERY SIMPLE reason why it's destined to fail ... It's a U.S ONLY law, which would limit EVERY COMPANY IN THE USA FROM INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS.
eg. I live in Australia, and if that system was in effect in the U.S I would be unable to purchase ANYTHING from U.S based Companies/Websites, or to subscribe to websites, etc.
Such a MASSIVE hit to the economics of the situation will ensure that it will NEVER succeed, unless they do the IMPOSSIBLE, and persuade EVERY OTHER COUNTRY to adopt the same system.

I have a name, am I becoming a number? . . . . And what happens when someone hacks my PC and steals my number? Doesn't this go against all government advice to have multiple passwords?
you hit the nail on the head D4T4, our SS numbers can be taken and used to steal ones identity, and with this net id your internet persona can be used for lots of nasty things online too.bad idea.
next its the microchip and the concentration camps to all who don't fit into their "ideal" dumbed down citizen!
Another use not mentioned is this "ID" will be used by the IRS to track you. Also D4T4 hit it on the head; my pc or ID is stolen what then? Deal with a multimillion dollar eating bureaucracy to change that number? Also remember the constant push for a "National" ID card? Well they believe if it is only for the "internet" the sheeple will go for it.
i dont like this new idea what about the people who r 16 like me!
i dont have bank account even tho i m living in u.s!

It was just revealed that Twitter is being bullied into handing over data to the US Government about people involved in/with WikiLeaks of different sorts. The data requested is personal information, such as private messages and IP addresses they have used, and essentially all other data that might be available. Facebook has probably received similar threats
The problem is not that we share our information with eachother – it’s that we don’t own it and manage it ourselves.so at the end off the day we dont own the date we have

like RIAA/MPAA, when someone steals our shit we try to hold anyone but ourselves legally responsible -- all it takes is a legal precedent
ruin the educational system, and then we can babysit all of our citizens through adulthood!

That shouldn't scare anyone. The fact that we have so many Techs out there that made peerblocker, peer guard, super hidmyIP, and others, shows they can change and hid anything from the gov. Disney started making their movies in 3D so it couldn't be copied and before they made there third movie, someone made a program to copy 3D, Blue Ray and anything that's out there. So, I'm not worried.
