It feels like it was yesterday, a few friends from Sweden launched a BitTorrent tracker “The Pirate Bay”. It got bigger through the years and it’s safe to say maybe even the biggest of all trackers. It was an iconic idea and a peace of file-sharing history. It coordinated the downloads of more than 25 million peers at it’s best days.
But every beginning must have an end, and The Pirate Bay is decided to be shut down today, this time for good. They claim that BitTorrent protocol evolved to such state that it makes the trackers less necessary because the downloads now have the chance to work well through DHT (Distribute Hash Table) and PEX (Peer Exchange).
Well, it’s almost true but the DHT and PEX have slow speeds which ultimately slow down the traffic of information and that leads to frustration in the end. But let’s say they had a point there. There is a statement in their blog about their decision where they say that it’s really an end of an era, but the era is “no longer up2date”.
When The Pirate Bay went down for the first time everybody thought that the system would collapse but it went on fine with other trackers, DHT and PEX without the people noticing anything meaningful. So even though we are getting shorter on trackers with at least one, we must not be too sad about it because it just marks the start of something new.
The newest implementation into the popular torrent index, is the "magnet" links. This is something that other gnutella clients previously implemented, and now is being portrayed by the slow sinking ship of TPB. Now you are able to simply click a "magnet" link, and download the torrent file directly into your client, rather than just using your browser to save/open the .torrent file itself. Why they decided to do this, is a bit uneasy. They are not going to stop the pressures on them, no matter how hard they try.
I feel grateful for TPB crew who got through a lot these few years and still they worked hard. They were like a benchmark for all. That’s maybe the best way to describe it. I just want to add that I respect them for making this decision. And I support them in what ever they come up with next.

bye bye TPB Rest In Peace .........
They had loads of advertising when you were browsing actually. But yes, they did revolutionize the tracker aspect of the bittorrent protocol. love or hate them, they at one point had the largest torrent tracker on Eart, and single handed tracked over 60% of the world's torrents.
I am lost for words
if i couldnt find a torrent I would most likely find it there or run accrossed something i did like I think TPB was the first site i used to get my torrents
Sm0ke weed TPB & RIP

Arrrr... She will be missed.
The Pirate was less stylish than ET, but I found alot of goodies there. Ya just had to search harder and read more comments to view any bugs & solutions. It will be missed as a icon of sharing.
R.I.P. TPB tracker as well
I don't believe in trackerless torrenting, it often takes quite a while to find peers and seeds with DHT on older torrents which is not only frustrating, but leads to people disconnecting because the torrent appears dead for the five minutes. Also stats are very important. How would I know which torrents are still alive? How would you know the health if you have over 20 torrents, you can't start them all just to check. Trackers are very important and very necessary.

RIP RIP RIP TPB Pirate Bay moves to decentralized DHT protocol, kills tracker
Yes and DHT is crap imo.
Well I wouldn't call it crap, DHT and Peer Exchange is a meant as a backup in case the trackers fail and it succeeded as such, but it's no replacement and misses vital information. When TPB was showing 0/0 on all torrents it was very apparant that something vital was missing. If there is an invention which is better than trackers, you have a valid replacement, but until then the tracker remains important.
That's why I call it crap. Not only can DHT "miss vital information", but it doesn't just rely on hash/metadata, but it also can complicate a process. If another torrent is being distributed elsewhere with the same vitality of the trackers/title info, and you have DHT, you can mistakenly grab files which are titled the same but not what you were trying to get. DHT is something I personally avoid for this reason. It has been proven that this error can occur.
R.I.P. we will all miss you. (Thanks for the good read OBS) :-(

Thanks, Z0R4N. I am sad to see TPB tracker go the way of the Dodo bird, but TPB as a site should of gone years ago. It revolutionized a whole system but then got abused from within and without. I got more than I bargained for the majority of the times I was forced to use their site. Spyware, malware, Virus's. Once something becomes too big it is no longer a community and the scum come out to play.
Thats why ET is the place to be. LONG LIVE ET

Honestly, i'm curious how many of us would be on ET if TPB had never been. I know I wouldn't be here. TPB is where I got my start. So thanks TPB for helping me find this great site, without you TPB, I would still be lost.

Yes, your article was a little sad,i like TPB,i downloaded a lot of good torrents from there, before i found out of ET of course. Is like they say :''all good things come to en end" so goodbye The pirate bay.
This is some form of hoarse TPB is still up and running better get your findings right before running an article
|hey coxxy5000 you need to get your findings right. or at least read the damn comments. TPB tracker is down. not TPB website, THE TRACKER!!! you can still download the files, but only through DHT or peer exchange. which will go WAY slower because its only certain people you can connect to, so even if TPB says seeds 0 leechers 0, there still people who have in on the local peer and DHT, so you can still get it from a FEW people||
