Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor recently told during the interview that consumers are not willing to spend their money on songs which can appear to be 98% garbage. In other words, if modern music wasn’t so awful, consumers would not be engaged in illegal file-sharing.
Entertainment industry has long been convinced that music sales today exist in a vacuum which is only disturbed by unauthorized file-sharing. Therefore, they insist that illegal file-sharing is the only reason why increased digital music sales have failed to offset the decrease in physical music sales.
Meanwhile, vast majority of the digital community understands that this claim is simply not true. One of those people is Corey Taylor, Slipknot frontman – one of many musicians who acknowledge that there are more factors responsible for decline.
During his recent interview Corey Taylor said that too many people in the entertainment business are ready to blame downloading for the grief of the music industry. Meanwhile, he noted that his opinion is that if 98% of modern music wasn’t crap to begin with, potential purchasers wouldn’t be involved in illegal file-sharing to download it for free.
Corey Taylor firmly said that he is sure that no-one would be willing to spend their hard-earned money on creative works that are maybe almost all garbage – at least, he personally wouldn’t. Although Taylor still purchases new music albums, when someone asks him what his favorite new album is, in 90% of cases he simply doesn’t have one. In short, “music is crap,” he said
Today, for plenty of music fans, when a musician musters up a great work, its price is normally limited to 99 cents on iTunes. Now, as opposed to what had been earlier, consumers are not limited to the only choice of “take it or leave it” physical CD. Today they have an opportunity to choose tracks they really want. Therefore, the difference for music industry has apparently been startling.
In the meantime, people are also able to listen to music they want absolutely for free on such streaming websites as Last.fm or Pandora. Notably, even the RIAA mentioned this fact a few weeks ago.
Actually, it’s quite an interesting point of view that Corey Taylor expressed. Hopefully, there will be more surveys covering the reasons why people choose to download music for free instead of buying it.

^The above statement is completely Accurate. The only people that buy crap are Doctors. They always ask for a stool sample.
good article sam, about time somebody should speak up about the quality of music thats being put out to the unsuspecting youth of today, correct me if im wrong but i do not know of any site that promotes and helps up and coming bands today how is anyone able to make a conciuos choice of what they think deemable to what should influence the flow of music these days,of course youtube is perhaps a guide nowadays of the amount of hits an unknown artists gets fair enough, but wheres the talent these days that are streetwise and raw not cosmetically moulded into corporate manipulation?
ory Taylor is absolutely right.. Record companys want artists to put 1 or 2 good songs on an album and the rest just throw something together to get album sales.
why do you think metalica was the front people attacking P2P,,, their music went to shit and has stayed shit. They as well as many others dont realized that they went to shit. it's so much easier to blamed others when in reality it's yourself (artists). why dont they just set up an itunes type thing for all their websites and offer pay for songs. (they might already I do not know)also offer to make custom CD's with different songs from dif artists under the same label. Then the artists are forced to make ALL decent songs. just an idea,,,also there are some people who just dont have the cash at the moment,,just let them hear your stuff if they like it, they will buy it. If you sue them then you help make up the minds of others not to give you a dime!!!
finally, someone that was heard about how bad the music that is made now is.
of course no one wants to buy it, its all the same and all bad.
and like always, remakes of older songs, because people have no talent.
agree, not worth it to pay 10 dollars for only one good song while the others are crap
So if Slipknot stop making music everyones. happy
C'mon!! what kind of moron thinks personal taste has anything whatsoever to do with this.
ahhhh I see. It's mr Taylors definition of crap music.....no wait... could we not use someone elses definition of "crap music"
...or does mr Taylor speak for everyone regardless of musical taste.;)
mr Taylor seems to be an idiot that believes everyone has the same taste in music an d thus he can define "crap".

i fully agree.
lets be honest Justin Beaver(sorry if spelled wrong but no idea how he calls himself)!!! REALY? I will spend hard earned cash for that crap? Who else is there of the so called musicians? Jesus what comes out now is either crap or so overproduced that it ends up as crap. Honestly i don't even bother downloading that fecal mater i just rip my old Cd's on my i pod. how come the 70's 80's and early 90's music don't slump in the sales? maybe because it is something we don't mind spending money on? the times where you could get people to buy any crap with fake charts and we all know the charts are fake i worked in my younger years myself as a record buyer for a major label which made me cry popular as i always had hundreds of records to give away for free, we and the youth of today has matured to thoughtful customers. we only buy now what we want and we know what we want because of the internet. we can research better read blogs and decide if it is worth spending money on. more quality less crap and you will make more profits.
I dunno I like some of the modern music its not bad but free is still better. No cd is worth 18.00. I can buy 100 blank cd's for that.
@AstroWeasel, I beleive "Mr.Taylors" point is that the music in general nowadays sucks. I happen to agree wholeheartedly with his statement in many ways.. The production, content, style, and just the over all quality of the music today has dropped dramatically over the last 10 years.. Not much imaginative effort put into any of it really, even If you take a good look at it all from a purely artistic standpoint.. IMHO people are quite frankly sick if it and wont stand for piss poor efforts when it comes to music and people buying it with there hard earned money sir.. Its not a matter of taste, its a matter of sence, get some my good man and stop throwing around insults like its free money..

Agree completely whith mr Taylor´s point a view. The quick pace of industry demands leaves little room for a more indepht creative process at a lot of levels, artists are drainded exploited and in some cases overrated, in a massive make believe is the best thing ever, when truly ,is no more than a clever remake whith the latest tech or just a reputation that must be kepth at all custs. Also , like a lot a regular people, a large part try to reach out the dream and be the idol...quantity over quality and massive industrialized machine behavior, instead of quality and good old virtuos dedicated musicians.....strange evolution of the bizz...the world is closer to be more from machines than humans :) just a mind thing.Be well
x factor /pop idol /simon cowell thats whats gone wrong with the music industry ,rehashed crap and they all sound the same,
AstroWeasel If you want to talk about opinions being irrelevant you might wanna retract your statement. Slipknot has MILLIONS and MILLIONS of followers, to which their fans I assure you all agree with Corey. You on the other hand, may have a friend, or a girlfriend or something and your opinion only matters to them =P
Anywho, excellent article, I couldnt agree more, when I download the album, if I like it I buy it, if its shit, I delete.

Back when Cd's first came out they were 15 bucks... more or less.. and we were told that was the price for the technology.. the blank discs the burners..etc.. when the costs of blanks dropped through the floor as well as the price of burners and everyone had one on their pc.. the record industry responded by RAISING the prices.. still claiming the technology..etc.. they are proven liars

They fail to mention the unending supply of rap (another nonselling genre by the way) and hip-hop.. which is also going through a sales droop... but that doesnt stop the dumbass producers.. do they even listen to the crap.. or are they just going on whatever some smooth talking agent tells them..

Why does every cd these days have to include 14 different "guests".. especially the hip-hop..? Answer.. because they are untalented hacks.."sampling..STEALING" someone elses music.. How many ac/dc (featuring Led Zeppelin) songs do you know of? Or James Taylor..(featuring Don McLean).. there are none.. because in the old days you had to have enough talent to make it on your own.. not include half the state of Georgia to make your song sound good.. hahah the haters will reply with their tear filled responses... but I dont care.. because it's real.. it's real.. it's damned real!!
So musical prefs are NOT a matter of taste??
It is . Do you seriously lte sense and not taste dictate what you listen to??
Millions and millions think slipknot sucks...so who's right then.
Nah... It's SUBJECTIVE. end of story
