One of the largest BitTorrent trackers in Sweden, Swebits, closed down without any apparent reason. Talking about the reason for the closure, the tracker’s operators point at DDoS attacks, troubles with hardware, and a lack of donations. Meanwhile, the local authorities and Swedish anti-piracy group Antipiratbyran tend to link the event to the arrest of the tracker’s prominent uploader, which took place several days ago.
Launched 7 years ago, Swebits BitTorrent tracker was one of the longest-standing communities in the country. The service, limiting access to local users only, accounted for over 40 thousand members during its active years.
However, a few days ago, Swebits visitors faced an unexpected message posted on the website’s homepage, starting with a philosophical aphorism of a beginning and an end. The notice later explained that the website had actually suffered a major DDoS attack coupled with hardware failure. According to tracker’s admin, those problems were too time-consuming and costly to solve. Considering that the website also had a lack of donations, the team behind the tracker understood that the site members simply didn’t want the service to survive.
Despite the official announcement of the site operators, the speculations are still circulating among Internet users. Indeed, there’s some additional motive for the closure, which the announcement didn’t mention. The country’s authorities, along with Swedish anti-piracy group Antipiratbyran announced that a person close to the tracker was arrested a week ago: one of the major uploaders to the tracker had his home raided. Later, an individual in question was arrested by the police.
The 25-year-old man was accused of uploading over 1000 movies to the tracker within a two week period last year. Since the guy is described by the authorities as a central figure in the BitTorrent tracker, they tend to link the closure of the service to his arrest.
In fact, that’s not the first time that the BitTorrent tracker has gone offline. Back in 2008, the tracker’s members were also led to believe that the service had died. However, it was just a stunt aimed at promoting the revamped design which appeared to be launched a few hours later. This time it is also unclear whether the site had completely shut down or not.

As we all know, everything a beginning and an end. This is the end of
Swebits and its existence in its present form. It has been
wild speculation over the past days, both hopefuls
and less hopeful about our future.
During Sunday night and the night was our servers again
severely affected by a DDoS attack. When DDoS: n slowed down, we waited
on getting the hand again, but then it turned out that something
else was wrong. We have had contact with our supplier in da
gene has informed us that there probably is a hardware
wrong. Since these are abroad occurs some practical pro
lems to resolve this issue, not only financially and time's
We have also learned the donation problems since staifby
segment. This has, ¡associated with the closure, also played a
large role in not wanting to run the business in its pres
the shape, since loss of donations is a sign that an
users did not want to see side survive.
It's been a pleasure to be sharing KTIG during part of Eng
bits of time and have the ability to influence Sweden's best tracker.
We know that there was more to be difficult to fill the void
Swebits leave behind, but it is not impossible to replace
us. Take care out there, whatever happens in the future
It is with sadness in our hearts we close Swebits
