The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry continues its efforts to choke off revenue sources for online infringing services.

IFPI recently announced a new collaboration including the country’s Police’s Economic Crime Directorate and credit card companies like Visa and MasterCard to combat online websites selling unauthorized content.

The scheme is easy: the anti-piracy outfit forwards the police evidence of individuals obtaining music from some online infringing service. The police, after verifying the accusation, warn credit card services of the unauthorized activity. The latter ask the service to verify the correct licenses to sell the content. In case the site fails to do so, MasterCard and Visa cease handling payments to it.

The IFPI boss admitted that it’s great for the entertainment industry that the largest payment systems in the world are doing their best to prevent their services from being abused by unauthorized sites infringing the rights of content owners. Statistics show that most of the illegal music sites are based out of Russian Federation and Ukraine, because royalty payments there are much lower than elsewhere in the world. That’s why they are rejected by such copyright owners groups as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

In its turn, the representative of MasterCard Worldwide said the company is pleased to support law enforcement to help prevent the unauthorized sale of the copyrighted content.

Such move is expected to hurt such websites as MP3Fiesta, which is based in Ukraine. The matter is that the service advertises that customers are able to purchase tracks with “safety and guarantee without doubt” by using Visa and MasterCard. Once these payment systems cease handling payments to the site, it would be much harder to attract the customers.

This attempt is just another reminder of the ongoing effort by rights owners to pressure credit card companies into cutting off the revenue sources of infringing services. For example, a couple months ago the MPAA and RIAA also tried to convince credit card companies to cut off file-sharing, streaming services and cyberlockers like MegaUpload. Now their effort seems to have more success.
