Minecraft Creator Says Piracy Is Good

All the anti-piracy groups and rights owners are 100% sure that piracy is the same as stealing, because every illegal copy is a lost sale. However, the creator of Minecraft game believes that piracy is an opportunity.

Indeed, statistics of the PC game named Minecraft shows a very healthy business model. Thus far, the game has got almost 5 million registered users, 30% of which have paid for the software.

But while the rest of the game developers would be complaining about 70% of their profit being lost thanks to unauthorized downloaders, the maker of Minecraft believes that the situation is quite optimistic.

He is sure that piracy can’t be equalled to theft, because if a car is stolen, the original is lost. But when a game is copied, there are simply more of them in the web. If you think that the game creator has pirate sympathies, you won’t be surprised to learn that he is a self-confessed member of the Pirate Party. He explains that there’s no such thing as a “lost sale” during his talk about piracy. Although he was supposed to talk for 5 minutes at GDC, he only managed half of this time, describing the experience as the worst thing in a long time. Nevertheless, by utilizing only 50% of his time, he has packed in value, leaving people wanting more. This coincidentally appears to be his game developers’ philosophy as well.

He assured the audience that if the game is just made and kept being added, those who downloaded it illegally would buy it the next week. Although all the other creative companies would insist that the game can account for a 70% piracy or “lost sale” rate, Minecraft developers see their cups full. This can be done by the rest of the copyright owners, especially by those viewing the “lost revenues” from the perspective of an outdated business model. In fact, even despite the pro-piracy stance of the company, its revenues continue to improve.

For example, back 6 months ago the game could boast 650,000 registered users, which makes it an increase of over 4,000,000 players. In addition, at the moment around 1.5 million of them have already bought the game, which is 10 times more than it was last September. In other words, it is clear that the things are headed in the right direction. According to the review held last year, 5,000 people were buying the software daily. As for now, the figure increased twice.

Joypadder avatarwow talk about misquoting someone he never said it was good and it really isn't 70% of illegal downloads at all.

far more ppl join the minecraft site to just talk about minecraft and see what its about before they buy it its only probably around 40% that have a illegal version of the game.

Honestly i love this site but some of these articles misquote ppl and lead you to believe something els like this

this is a quote from Notch the minecraft creator

"Please don’t interpret this text as me being fine with people pirating Minecraft. I’d MUCH rather have people pay for it so I can reinvest in hiring people and developing more cool games in the future. It’s also quite possible that if I get into a business deal with a larger company, there might be a larger push towards fighting piracy mostly because they’d require it, and I understand why they’d want that."

Crashman_123 avatarHave you SEEN this game ... Who in their right mind would pay US$22-28 for something that looks like it was written 15 years ago? Duke Nukem looked better than this thing does!

Especially when you can go to your local game store and buy a 2-3 year old game with a LOT better graphics for about the same price (even LESS on sale).

I wonder if he included those who pirated it to see if the game was actually as bad as it LOOKED, then deleted it when they found out it was WORSE!

Windfall avatarGraphics are too often the focus of games. I love awesome explosions and stressing my graphics card as much as the next guy, but Minecraft provides what so many beautiful games fail to...fun.

No avatarThis is an excellent example or someone who can't write articles.

Not only is the focus of the subject misquoted horribly.

But almost every number stated here is unconfirmed and probably wrong. Who the hell can "Confirm" a 70% lost sale rate due to piracy.

Whether you like the game or not, I would hardly call 70% an accurate number when using common sense. It isn't even a number anyone can accurately track.

Besides, I wouldn't call all of it lost sales... some people who pirate do buy the game eventually (As I did). Some people who pirate are broke and/or wouldn't of bought the game ANYWAYS.

This is all just a bunch of bull, this author shouldn't be allowed to write.

tonymengela avatarOpinions are like assholes everyone seems to have one but they usually stink, The man is making money, fact, He recognizes that P2P is helping to increase his sales, fact, and he is helping to fight for your ability to keep P2P, fact. Opinion: dont be so hard on guys writing these articles for your entertainment and providing the site for your DL's and ability to do so,,,wait thats a fact too, my opinion is that you should leave so you wont be bothered by what you think is crappy.

BlockerBrothers avatartonymengela, for somebody who likes to point out facts, I'm a little lost as to why you are jumping on the people who are pointing out the problems with this article? Most of the points mentioned are valid. The article as posted is inaccurate and thus is a misrepresentation of dare I say.....the facts.

Some of this may be a result of language issues or a simple lack of actual fact checking but Joypadder and ghsty870 in particular have done nothing wrong here. Pointing out that this article has a lot of errors is a good thing, not a bad thing. Don't be so hard on guys who are trying to set the record straight.

tonymengela avatarBlockerBrothers: because he does not correct the supposed errors with any facts, he corrects them with opinions and personal thoughts. How can you complain or point out errors when you start adding your own in? Yes creative input and error correction should be done. Read his complaint then reread the article his complaints do not line up. I think he had his thoughts confused.

Joypadder avatari didn't correct them with opinions it is fact what i put . Notch did not once say Piracy Is Good so the title of the article Minecraft Creator Says Piracy Is Good is a misquote i even put a quote in from notch here it is again

this was taken from notch's Blog so its fact .
"Please don’t interpret this text as me being fine with people pirating Minecraft. I’d MUCH rather have people pay for it so I can reinvest in hiring people and developing more cool games in the future. It’s also quite possible that if I get into a business deal with a larger company, there might be a larger push towards fighting piracy mostly because they’d require it, and I understand why they’d want that."

its not fact that 70% of the lost sales are because of piracy that's just not true at all its not even a misquote because notch never said it .

Its fine if they want to write an article but you cannot misquote people like that .

i do not need to correct the article in anyways the quote from notch's blog does that for me .

tonymengela avatarYou guys need to go back and re-read the article and then go learn English grammar. Your mis-matching parts of the story. Cut down on the Jolt cola.

SaM avataras per sources he said during the closing session of the Independent Games Summit that piracy is the same as stealing check here : http://www.gdconf.com/ & he did say Piracy is not theft:

my dear Joypadder i do not bring things from my own imagination and i respect you or any one who will point out any mistake or wrong information given in any article, and i would like to thank you for that, but as i said..i didn't bring that up...but i wonder about ghsty870 you signed up with this id just to write what u wrote about me..not the article, couldn't you use ur real id to write that?? and finally BlockerBrothers you can check the above links for actual facts ,and finally r u sure that Some of [THESE] may be a result of language issues ??

Joypadder avatarim not criticizing the way the article is written or anything of the sorts im just pointing out that the title is very misleading and that 70% of his lost sales are not due to piracy. its an impossible number to find out.

@Sam I wasn't saying you or anyone made this stuff up I just think a misquote is one of those things that happens and I pointed it out although I do agree its more than likely the language barrier.

i got the game off here i think then ended up loving it so much i purchased it .
i do 100% agree with watch Notch said tho piracy is NOT theft it was never a sale it was only potential. many times iv had a film off here and liked it so much i went and bought it.

tonymengela avatarJoypadder why change your story now? we all see what you wrote. what exactly are you saying? It's one thing when you actually mis-hear what a person says but you are all in text here so which is it?

DEMONLORD avatarat least someone sees the good for piracy. lol

Joypadder avatar@ tonymengela

Changing my story ???? where .. its still a misquote that i pointed out same as that 70% that no one on earth could even possibly know. where have i changed my story ???

Notch did not say piracy is good hence me saying its a misquote .

BlockerBrothers avatartonymengela, no need to take shots at anybody. Can you not have a discussion without resorting to pot shots? As for my English, it's good enough and I don't drink Jolt (Crown and Coke is more my thing) but if I keep reading posts that show up here, I may start.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that people pointing out a few mistakes with this story (and yes there are mistakes) shouldn't be jumped on. WTF is the point in that?

posted by (2011-03-08 20:47:22)
BlockerBrothers avatar@Sam

"and finally BlockerBrothers you can check the above links for actual facts ,and finally r u sure that Some of [THESE] may be a result of language issues ??"

Based on that one sentence alone, I'm 100% positive that the language issue plays a role. Again let me say that I'm not going after you here as I dont know you and thus have nothing against you. I'm just saying that for people to come along and bash people for pointing out errors with the article (and yes they are there) is stupid and arrogant.

posted by ET loverSuperman (2011-03-08 22:06:15)
tonymengela avatarI'm not making pot shots, I'm calling it like I see it. The errors are not in the article but in the minds on the readers, and the fact that they are miss matching parts. The article is very well put together and the facts are right on. I see this all the time with people they read parts on the story then make comments that do not even line up. One has to read the story according to the grammar provided, and then be able to understand it as well. This is where I was going with this.

Joypadder avatari have no problem with how the article is written but notch has been misquoted and that's pretty much the end of it as far as im concerned.

if you disagree then fine . but you cant say im wrong iv seen the speech that notch gave and he was indeed misquoted .

Skully_821 avatarI know where all of you stand on the subject, but the message from the article is clear. Thanks for the info Sam, just a shame people have to take it a step further and not debate the actual issue, just what mistakes were there in the content.

So MineCraft recognizes that piracy is an opportunity, can't be all bad news then!
About time too, Try before you buy always works for me.
