The name supernova.org is well-known for those people who’ve been using BitTorrent for more than 6 years. Suprnova.org was the biggest BitTorrent site on the Web in the first half of the previous decade. In the end it was lead to its decrease by legal pressure, but this week its founder has relaunched the site as a video portal with a small BitTorrent flavor.
A new site called Suprnova.org appeared in the fall of 2002 just months after Bram Cohen released his first version of BitTorrent to the users. Andrej Preston, a Slovenian teenager better known as Sloncek, founded the website, and it rapidly gained momentum.
Suprnova turned out to become the biggest BitTorrent website on the Internet in the months to follow, with over a million visitors per day. However, like a lot of other BitTorrent websites it didn’t last for long. In December 2004, though the site was very popular Andrej resolved to close it in because of the legal threats.
In 2007, Suprnova was resurrected by the people behind The Pirate Bay whom Andrej offered the domain, and it returned to the BitTorrent scene. But the site didn’t find its previous glory as each month only several thousand visitors passed by.
Last year Andrej wanted to launch a new project and he asked the domain back. Andrej decided to open his own video portal using the Suprnova brand because he attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he focuses on TV.
Several days ago the new Suprnova officially launched, and we decided to meet with Andrej, the director of TorrentFreak TV , and learn about his new project.
“SuprNova.org is licensed under Creative Commons with the aim to give everyone the opportunity to view entertaining content whenever they wish absolutely free” Andrej told us.
“We believe that re-distributing shows is good. We believe in the free flow of information. We think that to give everything free of charge is good. We want to see a world where a copy does not equal lost profit,” he said.
Suprnova.org features unique short format videos made by and for it. Users can stream videos online, and for each show a torrent download is given true to the BitTorrent roots.
“We are aware of the fact that during your 5-minute break you’d like to watch something amusing just for laugh. That is why we decided to make shows, which last no longer than 3 minutes. The ideal duration is from 15 to 45 seconds.”
One of the shows that are featured on the site is TorrentFreak TV, and though we haven’t watched a new episode for months, it’s good that it listed there. Andrej and his team will concentrate on releasing more unique content in the weeks to come.
“Every day we will add new content as we want users to discover something new on the site every time they visit it. Gradually, we will increase the production of the shows, we will release new shows more often,” Andrej added.
The biggest BitTorrent index turned into a modest video portal with great aspirations. We do wish Andrej, Stacia and his team the very best and in the near future we’re anticipating watching some new TorrentFreak TV episodes on Suprnova.
