Belarusian TV viewers were shown several previous Oscar-awarded films last week due to the forthcoming Academy Awards ceremony. Belarus’ National State Television resolved to air The Hurt Locker, one of the best last year’s movies. But obviously having not gone through all the right licensing channels, the channel managers chose to present a copy downloaded from the BitTorrent site Interfilm.ru.
Last Sunday Belarus TV viewers watching The Hurt Locker on TV took notice of something strange. Near the end of the film, the action was interrupted by a female voice-over with the following words:
“This release is made only for interfilm.ru.”
Among BitTorrent viewers Interfilm.ru is known to be a famous BitTorrent tracker. In 2009, after the MPAA put pressure on the Russian authorities, this website was raided, and at present it is the center of copyright infringement claim which works out at a stunning $1.25 billion.
It is quite unusual when National State Television broadcasts films uploaded to Interfilm, but it is a usual thing when voice-over message appears in a movie.
A Belarusian blogger was the first to post the message on his website, from there it was distributed to some leading news outlets including Lenta.ru. National State Television which is supposed to have aired the pirated reproduction of The Hurt Locker has yet to react to the incident.
It is unpleasant that this blunder should occur during the Academy Award ceremony, and that it references the first BitTorrent site which was raided in Russia. Last year the producers of The Hurt Locker sued thousands of BitTorrent users in the USA, and they probably will be disappointed to learn about such an impudent action of copyright infringement.
In January 2009, a few months before the official release, a DVD copy of The Hurt Locker appeared on the Web. Pirated reproductions of the movie were downloaded by a great number of people in the months to follow, and at present it has the reputation of the first ‘torrented’ film to be aired on national television.
Update: A spokeslady for Belarus’ National State television announced that the Russian company GALA Media had given proper licenses for the movie. She noticed that apparently the phrase containing Interfilm.ru had been a “technical error”.
