SABAM, the Belgian music royalty collecting outfit, keeps stepping up to enforce their harsh copyright regime. Previously, it was collecting money for non-existent musicians and conveniently forgot to pay out to real artists, and now it is targeting truck drivers listening to music in their cabs without a license.
Royalty collection outfits around the world become known for doing crazy things to claim royalties on behalf of performers and music composers – from targeting schools and children community centers to charging charities for the singing of Christmas carols. Some of them even go to such extremes as crashing weddings.
However, despite the fact that those royalty agencies are extremely strict in forcing their rules onto others, they appear to fail to comply with their own standards. Recently that attitude was clearly exposed by the Belgian TV-show Basta, showing how the country’s music royalty collector SABAM was charging people to pay fake artists.
Now SABAM is once again in the news, this time demanding truck drivers to pay money for listening to music in their cabs. The royalty collecting society argues that since a truck’s cab is a working place, the drivers have to pay royalty fees. SABAM insists that this is a simple rule, but some disagree.
Maggie De Block, Belgian MP, said that the request is utter nonsense, pointing out that the truck drivers need the radio more for their safety rather than for playing music, so that’s illogical to make them pay for it. As for the Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne, he doesn’t support the theory of the copyright police either, insisting that listening to radio is quite essential for truck drivers and that apart from this, a cab is an intimate space.
In response, SABAM simply announced that they can claim royalties from everyone who listens to music while working, insisting that they had an agreement with Minister Van Quickenborne which gives them that right. As for the drivers, it doesn’t matter whether they work in an office or a truck cab. Speaking about the safety argument, SABAM brushes aside these concerns, claiming that truckers still profit from listening to music played on the radio.
This example, coupled with many others, indicate that small businesses or non-profits are often being hunted down, which doesn’t help the collecting societies maintain a good public image.

wow, are they serious. truck drivers. they should all go on strike for a week and see how the country crumbles due to lack of supply's. then they wouldn't target them anymore. we have all been on long drives and it can get very boring quick
are they crazy? if tehy already bought the cd's why do they have to pay royalties?
more reason to pirate. to hell with the music industry, they only make garbage anyway.
i've practically stopped listening to music all together, i have hundreds of cds packed away in boxes and havent bothered taking them out since my last move.
next thing you know, they will tell you if you move you have to buy them again.

really? How do they personally last? (please note I am not threatening in any way) but these dudes lives would be worth nothing in other places. let them try that with redneck U.S. truckers lol. I'm just saying what next we have to buy a license for the memory of even seeing said copyrighted material? I mean our brains make permanent copies of everything we see.
