Internet giant will now store data on search queries one and a half years
Three years ago, Yahoo a drastic step and pledged to user search data in future only be stored for three months. At this point, most large Internet companies a policy to store data in a year or longer. EU Commission had recommended that it should be shortened to half a year - and Yahoo chose to go ahead by cutting it down to three måneder.Tre years have passed and now Yahoo again chosen to go ahead - but this time in the opposite direction. Yahoo now says that from now on will save log data for 18 months. So it is six times longer than before.
Thus goes Yahoo with one blow from being one of the internet giants, which hold data in the shortest time, to being one of them that stores data for the longest time.
The new policy comes into force in July. Yahoo justifies it .in a blog post
,Thus goes Yahoo with one blow from being one of the internet giants, which hold data in the shortest time, to being one of them that stores data for the longest time.
The new policy comes into force in July.
"In the last three years, the way we and other companies offer services online and the way consumers use the web changes dramatically. So we will keep our log data longer than we have done until now - to offer consumers a more robust individual experience - while we continue to be innovative when it comes to transparency and opportunities to protect her privacy, "writes Yahoo's Anne Toth, who has the title as chief trust officer.
These data on user search behavior can be used to provide tailored services, but they can also be used to deliver targeted advertising.
Yahoo will then also criticized for its decision to store data for 18 months.
"Frankly it is very disappointing. We had a feeling that the search engines was finally beginning to compete to protect privacy - that it is another piece of the puzzle. But this signals something else, "says Richard Esguerra from the Electronic Frontier Foundation to the New york times
.The new policy could also bring Yahoo into conflict with the EU Commission's current requirement that data should only be kept for six months. But Yahoo signals that they will negotiate with the EU Commission to reach a solution.Posted by: Date:

Here is a Direct quote - "Well, the details are a bit scant, but it seems that the content of Google searches were used to help establish intent in a murder trial".
A trial that took way longer than 3 months to get to court. So who are they kidding? I hate to think what they do with my Google E-mails. I am glad Google doesn't have their greedy little fingers on my cell phone, SNAP!
