Recently we saw a lot of Pirate Parties emerge all around the world. They are pushing ever since for the main focus on censorship, copyright and privacy laws which are the most critical for every user of the p2p protocol. Now there is a new party who wants to enter the fight on the political level. That would be the Australian Pirate Party.
They are currently seeking at least 500 members in order to be registered officially as a political party. They announced that new members are needed for the attempt to get officially registered with the Australian Electoral Commission.
The catch in it is the number of member, which is as previously mentioned 500, and all the members who sign in must fill out an application form and pay 20$ as a founders fee. It sounds easy but not that cheap. They stated that this is the way to give a chance to the people to vote for piracy and make the governments more transparent in their operation and to make the copyright laws a little less balanced. It could be a way to ensure innovation and better prosper for the technological culture of Australia and a good example for the rest of the countries.
If we look at the last year or so, a lot has happened. The Pirate Bay and Mininova lost their cases in court against the entertainment industry and even though the sites remain the material they present is not the same. Many torrents were lost and many uploaders needed to find a new home. But it was a good year for the Pirate Parties on the political stage.
For example, in the European Parliament they have two seats, also many new Parties emerged worldwide like in Germany where they got 845 000 votes in the first year of their existence according to the PPInternational. Another case is the UK Pirate Party which was registered at the Electoral Commission in August, Canada is up for the same reason and now Australia is taking the movement and making it their cause.
President of the Aussie Pirate Party David Crafti said that the attempts of the current goverment to implement an Internet censorship regime, continuing war on sharing what is rightfully ours, all across the globe, is increasing day after day. Now we need to defend our civil rights and our democracy or the world we live in won’t be our own anymore. We need to put up a fight officially against the pro-copyright lobbyists so that we could have the chance to share and continue our lives without fear of getting a mail or phone call or ultimately getting to jail.
Now it’s up to the Aussies to fill the forms and pay their fees so that the work can begin on making the net and the government a better place for us. I wish them luck because I know they will need it. The first steps are never easy but if somebody can do it “pirates” can. If there are some Aussies among the readers of the article here
is the form for the registration.

|Thanks Z0R4N, The momentum in Australia must keep going, If not the powers that be will have a nice list of who became a member, Remember the McCarthy years in the US? The Pirate Party will have to become a party with clout, and to that I hope they do. So to everyone here from Australia join up and if you don't want to at least get out there on Election Day and cast your ballet.|

|This is the only way to act - put up a political party and organization. Win elections. Make this issue (free net & share) of same importance as enviromental issues and globalization. In fact it's the same fight.|
