Writer Megan Lisa Jones confirmed that such innovative media distribution channels as BitTorrent are democratizing business and distribution models, at the same time decreasing the impact of such common gatekeepers as book publishers.
It was just a few weeks ago when writer Megan Lisa Jones made a deal with BitTorrent Inc. to release her book titled "Captive" to the company’s 100 million users. The move meant to show an innovative media model which would benefit everyone. And so it did, with over 423,000 downloads already and counting. The author admitted that she managed to build a global audience in just a fortnight, rapidly reaching across borders and traditional media boundaries. All her attempts turned out to be rewarded with an engaged audience. BitTorrent users were passing the word on to their friends and relatives who in respond downloaded and read the novel. Megan Lisa Jones now promises the sequel to come next year.
Despite the fact that the copies of the e-book “Captive” are sold for $9.99 on Amazon, the author chose to also tap into more than 100 million users of BitTorrent Inc. Now, watching the results, chief strategist at BitTorrent Inc. Shahi Ghanem assumes that the numbers of her book demonstrate the demand for any type of digital creative works in the BitTorrent ecosystem. BitTorrent Inc. expressed its content with Ms. Jones’ success and said that progressive writhers like her would be first to create a new form of reader engagement. In response, Megan Lisa Jones recognized BitTorrent as a great partner very attuned to the needs of its audience. She noted that the BitTorrent community really embraces the technology and content creators who use it.
The download BitTorrent Inc. offers to its users is a free Captive application, consisting of the full downloadable novel in two formats – .pdf and .epub, coupled with a video introduction, through which the readers can learn an overview of the writer, the story line of the book and writing process.
This news is another indication of success of such innovative online media distribution models as BitTorrent, which are both democratizing distribution channels and decreasing the rate of involvement of traditional gatekeepers. In fact, that’s just the same we saw in the music industry, and hopefully will see in the future with the film industry.
