According to Wikileaks cable, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested the individual named Geremi Adam, widely known as the camcorder for the “maVen” film release group, just as a personal favor for one of the country’s Motion Picture Distributors Association officials, but not because of camcording.
Geremi Adam, the 28-year-old Canadian, widely popular within the file-sharing community for being a camcorder for the “maVen” film release group, was convicted and sentenced to prison more than a year ago. But only now the public have learned that the entire issue was only a personal favor for a studio executive.
When it comes to unauthorized camming, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they don’t consider it as a major issue. Instead, they believe that the copyright holders should better consider civil code. They also admitted that although a conviction under the civil code can only lead to a small fine and won’t involve prison time, it can still allow the police to focus its resources on more vital concerns.
So, when the police was approached by the country’s Motion Picture Distributors Association over the issue of pursuing Adam, they initially didn’t agree, and were going to only arrest Adam “as a personal favor” to studio official. The police called Adam a “small player” supposedly being manipulated by a whole piracy organization. They also believed that Adam didn’t receive lucrative financial rewards for his work.
Meanwhile, some police representatives even began expressing concern over the fact that such actions could undermine the institution of police, particularly after the movie industry started to come to police more and more often, demanding law enforcement action.
The police suggested that the entertainment industry could litigate on their own, but that would be quite difficult to prove that Adam had a commercial purpose to his camcording. Geremi Adam originally pleaded guilty to two counts for distributing movies “Invincible” and “How to Eat Fried Worms” in the Internet 5 years ago, but in the end was released, as camcording was not against the law at that time. Adam was nabbed again 3 years ago for camcording “Street Kings” at the theater, and was charged again for copyright infringement. The litigation resulted in the sentence of 9 weeks of jail and 100 hours of community service.

Yes he did die, One week after finishing his sentence. He started taking morphine in jail and had access to much more when he was out. He as also on anti-depressants and tranqs. It was in all the papers here when it happened. A big price to pay, for as this article stats as A personal favor for a studio official.

Unbelievable. So, the guy wasn't taking any drugs before. He's just a guy who was camming movies. Then, some studio official begged the police to arrest him and they did. He was sentenced to jail, but in jail he was exposed to people much worse than him, people that actually commit REAL crimes. He was exposed to drugs and became addicted. Eventually, he died of an overdose... Wow. If you were related to that guy, wouldn't you wanna sue that studio official? He wanted to make an example out of him but in the end he ended up playing a hand in his death.

Every-time some one slams a cam-job, think of the first person that took there time to get in there on the first night to get that. He/She is just a person like us, that is trying there best. He/She could be our next door neighbor. MaVen was that guy and he got doubled screwed by the system. Lets all hope that he will be the last to pay the ultimate price, so people can judge for themselves whether they want to go to the cinemas and pay for a movie or not.
