What's Your Favorite BitTorrent Client?

Added: Sunday, December 6th, 2009

There are many popular BitTorrent Clients around the world. A huge myth for the past year, is that uTorrent was the most used BitTorrent Client in the world. That has now been proven to be wrong, with the Chinese "Xunlei" (codename: Thunder) torrent client claiming the throne as the most used torrent client in the world.

Torrent Client

Many of you have your favorites, and some prefer one client to another. From uTorrent, to the original BitTorrent, to BitComet, to Vuze/Azureus, to Transmission, to libtorrent, to KTorrent, to RTorrent, to BitTornado, to Mainline, to BitSpirit, to TuoTu, to FlashGet, to BitTyrant, there are many options available.
Most Used Clients

I'd just like to hear from the community, as to what torrent clients you prefer. If you have a favorite, what makes it stand out from the rest? Is it the "name" that just stands out? Does it offer more features? Why is it you choose your favorite torrent client, above the others?

I just think it's interesting to hear from the community about their personal favorites, and why they enjoy them. Feel free everyone, to post direct links to download a torrent client you recommend, in the comments area below this article!

I've had absolutely no probs with it, runs smoothly and dead simple to use (I'm not much of a wiz with technical stuff), dl and ul speeds very high so I must be doing something right. :)

No avatarI'm currently running Bittorrent 6.2 and have been using BT for some time. It was the first client a buddy of mine got me to download so I have stuck with it. I like Transmission but am not running a Linux box so back to BT 6.2. I have tried others such as Azureus but it reminded me of iTunes. I want something lightweight with no frills. Overall I'd say I use BT 6.2 because it's what I know and I don't feel like learning a new client. I liked reading this post and all the responses... ET ROCKS!

Yeastful_Biscuit avatarI started with Azureus but switched to BitTorrent, and noticed a major performance increase. I guess due to how light weight it is. So I am happy and have stuck with it since (about two years now). I tried uTorrent and noticed that the GUI and options are the exact same as BitTorrent, only with a very slight look difference. So whats the difference between the two?

Farquardt avatarStarted out with BitTorrent then BitComet. They were just such resource hogs so somebody suggested uTorrent. Small file, low resource needs and fairly intuitive. Now, a couple of years later, it just sits there working for me. There may be better products but it would take a really significant improvement to get me to switch. I've got better things to do than look for a 2 or 3% improvement.

Vuze and Utorrent1.8.something and i find Utorrent1.6 to be best because like he says it uses the least amount of system resources. problem i have with vuze is that if im d/ling i cant surf the net. the computer with Utorrent1.6 is smooth even if i d/ling at 1.5mbps . Utorrent is easy to use, Vuze needs some adjustments ... when i was a newbie tried the other ones bitlord, mainline bitcomet etc, and always ended up d/ling infected files and then battling trojans... so now me stick to the simple stuff .... hmmm the chinese one, Xunlei , is there an english version? my chinese is rather bad nowadays!! :) thanks xxxOBSCENExxx another nice article :)

wiredsauce avatar@ OBSCENE - Yeah I think that's my problem. Using the newest release of utorrent, and I am having issues with port forwarding as the downloads are going very slow for me (18.5kb/s on a 4MB down connection). Not connecting to seeders etc, it's a PITA. I tried the 1.6 version of utorrent but found there is no bandwidth allocation settings, which I need. Is there a next version up from 1.6 that has that feature? I will look into the port forwarding issue, but it's strange because this has just up and happened a few weeks ago without a change to anything in my network or ISP.

Boomer avatarIt's interesting that Xunlei can rule when many in the Western world haven't even heard of it.

It's µTorrent for me mostly, I've loved it since 2006 at least. On Super Ubuntu I use Transmission, it's their default Torrent program, and it's fairly nice, except if there are lots of torrents in the list, then it can be hard to scroll the list and keep an eye on them all. Ktorrent for Linux looks like µTorrent, but isn't really a clone, it does things differently.

What xxxOBSCENExxx means is that when vuze is running it consumes a lot of virtual memory thus making the execution of other programs a hassle. plus not only that, like i have said before, with vuze running surfin the net is really slow if not completely dead. but as the saying goes, if you happy with it stick with it! if you got no issues with Vuze then just continue using it! :)

I just see no need to look elsewhere as speeds are always about the same no matter what client and Utorrent uses so little resorces.

wiredsauce avatar@PsYcHaYoGi - No it doesn't help the downloads so I guess it lays in a port forwarding issue. Now I just need to find out the password to the router on the network I am having trouble with. I use 2 different networks throughout the day, as they are in different places. Thanks for the help PsYcHaYoGi!

No avatar@ wiredsauce, http://portforward.com typically the pass is either the word "admin", "blank", "password", or "pass". Typically the router IP is 192.168.1.1 or effectively within that range. Check portforward, and see if your model is located there.
