British student has created a site allegedly linking to copyrighted content. That was enough for the United States to demand his extradition. Now Richard O’Dwyer’s, the ex-owner of TVShack, may face an American court over his online activities before repeated domain seizures.

TV%20SHACK%20LOGO.png

Apparently, when O’Dwyer launched TVShack, he didn’t imagine that he would face extradition demands from the United States, but that’s precisely what has happened. His service, having an original name of TVShack.net, was a very popular site for Internet users to search for links to entertainment content. However, TVShack.net was seized a year ago by federal officials as part of their “Operation In Our Sites” campaign. This, however, didn’t stop the site operator from continuing his activity, and the service quickly re-emerged as TVShack.cc, which was also seized by the authorities in four months. After this, TVShack never came back again, only leaving clone websites behind.

Now the site operator is out on bail after being arrested. He is reported to not face a court in the UK until September. But as far as the United States is concerned, this is not enough. Some UK newspapers reported that the US demanded that O’Dwyer face a court in the United States for linking to copyrighted content. Meanwhile, the Computer Science student is in disbelief over the charges, but quite anxious about the impact the issue may have on his studies, as O’Dwyer has 2 years left of his degree. Unsurprisingly, the guy is frightened by the prospect of being extradited to the US, let alone the disruption to his future career and education.

O’Dwyer’s mother claimed that the decision to put him on trial in another country was nonsense, explaining that her son had a talent for web design, while being foolish in misunderstanding the implications of copyright.

Meanwhile, the terms of the guy’s bail include not entering ports or airports, as well as not applying to register new domains. Earlier this week, the site founder appeared before the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court at a preliminary hearing, where his lawyer argued that the extradition demands made by the United States violated his client’s fundamental rights and there was no basis for extradition at the first place, because the site server wasn’t based in America at all.

Crashman_123 avatarANOTHER example of the USA acting as the international Bully Boys. The guy has never BEEN to America, his servers were never BASED in America, yet they want to PROSECUTE him in America?? In actual fact I'm surprised he never sued the American authorities for seizure of his Domain Name, which WASN'T in America, and therefore DOESN'T fall under American Law.

fusseltier avatarthis is ridiculous, of course they only go after western countries when the biggest offenders are in china, and they flood asia with dvds full of movies and sell them for $1.50.
thats right, $1.50 for at least 9 movies on one dvd.
until the west stops buying chinese made goods that are made to elinate western jopbs and increase the corporate and shareholders profits, china (and north korea) will never see actual freedom.
remember what brought the fall of the soviet union? no money
but of course, in america, the only thing that matters is profits and corporations rights, not the peoples rights. and until that is changed) republicans are mostly to blame anyway) the US will never be what it used to be and will always owe china.

bigcow2k avatar+1 to @1
@5 that's a rather narrow way of viewing the situation... it's all about cause n effect - the effect being what u claimed about china which is brought on by a few significant causes. china does this bcos they know what the people wants and they were quick to act. But u haven't lived in any asian countries so i doubt u have no way of being able to look at the whole picture

Joypadder avatar@11 they wont dude the UK is the top pocket of the USA they wont jeopardize the relations for the sake of 1 person . such a shame the USA should have no jurisdiction over a UK citizen UNLESS the laws he breaks are in that country . this just gives the rest of the world cause to hate the USA maybe not the people but the politics of the country .

i wonder if they would extradite one of there own had he broken a law in the USA but china wanted to charge him .

Chloe avatarI wish everyone would stop making generalizations about the American people based on what a section of our government does. Just because "the United States" wants this kid punished for his "crime" doesn't mean we all do. There are over 300 million Americans, we all aren't the same person and share the same ideas. That would be the same as us blaming the people of Great Britain for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I know the PEOPLE had nothing to do with it, just cause it's a British owned company doesn't mean the whole region is to blame. If you want to be pissed, be pissed, but direct your anger at those who angered you. Don't blame us all for the actions of a few.

Joypadder avatarits sucks for the American people getting tarnished with the same bad brush as the Gov. im from the UK and have family over in the USA and they all agree its the government that makes the people look so bad .

people are extremely ignorant when it comes to different country's and there government .
just because the Gov enforce a law or a policy that's stupid or unfair does not mean the people agree or support it in any way .

The oil spill what a disgrace and a huge embarrassment.

D1DDY007 avatarHow can you be punished for copyright, when the content in question doesnt even exist on the site.
If i search for something on google, the content isnt there but it takes me off to it as well!
@15 It might be a british company, but half of the board of directors are american anyway.

people avatar@20 haha.. @Topic.. Hmm.. I find this topic very surprising. Is this for real? How come a foreign country extradite other country's citizen? It's the home country that should take action if he did something illegal. For me Torrent sites are not illegal. The U.S is poking it's nose in whatever they find, be it Afghan or U.K. I'm not hating the U.S people, but just the Government.

UPPERCUT avatarI'm ENGLISH and while I agree the US gov are acting like bullys we havent exactly set the best political example tony blair basically sucked bush off on worldwide tv he also damaged this Country beyond repair and ran away to live in the States so maybe we should all just agree that the situation is ridiculas and the governments of the World constantly let the world down.

star61 avatarI'm British and i say stuff the Goverments even our own. Countrys are suppose to have democratic Goverments where we as people should have a say how our countrys is run and what laws are fair and which are not. They all promise this when running for election and when they get in its f@@k the people. It seems we are all in recession no jobs, prices rising and they still want to pick stupid laws costing more tax payers money to Extradite one person, im not saying he should't be punished if breaking the law but he can't help what people up load to his site unless he did it himself.

cWaZy8s avatarIts all a crock!! The UK basically owns the USA anyway. The Royal Family has been running the show from behind the scenes since 1606. Before you laugh and bag the theory out, check out the info at do your own research and make up your own mind as to the real truth of it all.

bigcow2k avatar^^ nice read
i bet somewhere along the line the royal family must have felt the pinching pain up their arses for allowing america get their own independence. UK is so far behind now lol
Speaking of democracy, it's just an illusion

@uax4it u forgot to include compensation. disability doesn't pay as much lol

cWaZy8s avatarThe whole idea that the USA is independent is just an illusion. The war of Independence was orchestrated by behind the scenes power mongers ie the royal families of Europe and the NWO/Illuminate to give the illusion of the US being an independent nation. Dig deeper and you find so much evidence supporting this. The Virginia Company is just the tip of the iceberg!!
“Freedom in general may be defined as the absence of obstacles to the realization of desires”
