In recent weeks, we've watched the fall of the once great Mininova. In an effort to allow the founders of the site, to speak to their former members, I attempted to contact their President, for an interview.

First I was told yes, they agreed to the interview, then, suddenly, they told me they could not answer my questions. Well I'm very disappointed by the decision of Mininova, so I will post the emails here for all to see.

Here is my first message to Mininova:

Hi

I'd like to interview the site owner, for an article on our website, http://extratorrent.com if that would be possible. We know you fought the good fight for many years, and we respect you for it. We also know making a decision to end all content in such manner as you have on your site had to be a hard one, and trust us it's a blow to the entire torrent world. We again would love to interview you, with some questions about things which have transpired in the past year(s) and why you came to this final decision. We want to know what went through your head, from day one until now. What made you decide this ultimate fate for the infamous Mininova, and how you feel about it. Also how you feel about the anti-piracy scum which have pursued your site and yourself relentlessly. Again we support you, and hope things go well in the future for you.

Thanks for your time,

OBSCENE

My reply:
OBSCENE wrote:
Hello,

Thanks for allowing the interview. It's important to our community :) I'll write each question one by one and then post my question, and your reply in the article.

Since 2005, after becoming the offspring of the popular Suprnova.org, Mininova had arose from the underworld to become one of the world's largest torrent index sites. It's community was far stretching, and massive. Recently, due to pressures from the judicial system, it decided to totally remove all infringing torrents, a database that was the largest of any torrent site, and now only allow "Content Distribution" from independent labels, software companies, publishers, and film groups. It's community felt devastated, but the torrent world understood that Mininova had little choice but to do this.

First of all, Mr. Erik Dubbelboer, President of Mininova BV, I would like to thank you for taking the time out to speak on behalf of the great Mininova and sit down with us for this interview. I have a few questions, and I intend to distribute this to the masses, in order for them to hear from you.

On behalf of your very large community, we all supported you through every legal dispute and every court battle, and we still support you even after the loss to the Anti-Piracy outfits that attempted to bring you down. If you had to tell the community how you felt about these anti-piracy firms, and the decisions which were made in court against, as to whether you feel they were just or outright unfair, what would you say?

Many within the torrent community are finding new homes, and replacements for Mininova now, and after the demise or potential demise of The Pirate Bay, they feel displaced. What can you promise to come from your future endeavours and plans related to file sharing?

In every aspect of the torrent world, most sites were affected by the loss of Mininova as a large indexer. Various torrent sites indexed from within the site of Mininova, and now must crawl new places in hopes of keeping up with future torrents. We know you care about file sharing as a peer to peer right, not just a privilege, and what made your site continue operating as usual for as long as it did?

In the end, you decided to remove 99.9% of your extremely large database of .torrent files, what made you come to such an abrupt decision, without prior notification to the community?

In essence, the world has been behind you. You've had supporters internationally, backing you from day one in court. What would you like to say to those whom supported you over the years?

When you first opened Mininova, the site became huge. What I want to know, is did you have any expectation that it would become as large as was?

The decision in May from the BREIN civil procedure, was that Mininova would have to enforce tough new copyright filters. Did you believe that would be the end of the case against your site, or did you predict that future escalations would continue as the eventually did?

In August, the Utrecht court ruled that Mininova needs to remove all torrent files pointing to copyright protected material from the platform within 3 months or face damages of up to €5 million, did you feel then that this was a fair decision?

About BREIN, some can call them the sharp-tongued scavengers who work against the torrent world with unprecedented fashion. How do the founding crew of your website actually feel about this group which terrorized so many within the torrent world?

Do you think that BREIN is a legit and fair organization, or do you believe, as do most site owners, they are "hired guns" of the entertainment industry, willing to go to stop at no extent to fight the torrent world?

If you had a message to deliver to the courts about the decisions they made against your site, what would it be?

According to your blog post, you are considering an appeal to the court. On what premises to you believe you should be granted a new trial?

If you do consider an appeal, do you believe you can sway the decision of the court by doing what The Pirate Bay, and others have failed to do, which is in fact, actually attempt to make the courts understand how file sharing via the BitTorrent Protocol works? I believe that's the main reason so many have fallen, is the lack of knowledge about the protocol or even peer to peer file sharing as a whole.

As of November 24th, it's estimated there were at least 10 BILLION downloads from your website. Do you feel that your site made an impact on the torrent world and the peer to peer file sharing community in general?

I know the site administration, founders, system operators, and peers have been shocked by this. How did you feel personally when it all came to an end last week?

What new projects can we expect from the Mininova team in the future, are there any exciting plans that have yet to be unveiled?

If you have any suggestions or advice to give to other indexers, trackers, or torrent sites which are still standing, that you have learned form this long ordeal, what would that be?

Again we thank you for taking time out of your extremely busy schedule to speak to our community on behalf of one of the greatest peer to peer file sharing sites every, and possibly the greatest torrent site to ever exist, Mininova. Our support and prayers are with you and your staff for all eternity, and we hope to see future projects from the same team that brought us such a great site over the years. Thank you for everything you've done for the torrent world. Thanks to all of the site staff, admins, and power players he kept fighting until the very end. Thank you.

End Article

Thanks so much for your time, and I wish you and your crew the best of luck in any appeal or future plans.

I know this must be a very tough time, and remember, the community is behind you 100%, because you kept fighting until the end, and never once sold out the community. You did what you had to do.

Thanks,
xxxOBSCENExxx

Hi,

I'm sorry for the late reply.

I have read your questions and I'm afraid I prefer not to answer most of them. I'm afraid an interview like this would not really work for us. I could answer some questions but most of it can already be read in our blog post (http://blog.mininova.org/articles/2009/11/26/mininova-limits-its-activities-to-content-distribution-service/).

Thanks for understanding,

Erik Dubbelboer
President, Mininova BV

It seems Mininova does not in fact care for telling the community, which kept it thriving for so many years, their opinions on the matters at hand. I may have been wrong when I believed Mininova actually cared about file sharing. Maybe they do, but they're choosing not to answer the questions so many have dearly wanted to ask.

For those whom don't understand, myself, and ET, truly love file sharing. We believe it is not only a right, for the world, but something that must be fought for. File sharing is as important to the world as libraries are, as any form of communication is. It benefits us all in so many ways, that I cannot describe in a mere few sentences how important it truly is.

For those of you from Mininova, I wanted you to see, that the beloved site you once called home, truly feels about telling it's community the truth. They sadly, feel that answering the people whom made them rich, and the people who kept supporting them to the very end, is not as important, as now trying to go "legal".

I felt that they owed each of you from Mininova an answer, and an expression, they failed to do so, so I attempted to contact them for a one on one interview. First they agreed, then they declined. I am only stating the facts people.

Here on ET though, I'm keeping them honest. I promise to never fret or fail to bring you the truth, about any cause, or any situation. For the truth will set you free.

Goodbye Mininova, you have lost your followers, and lost my personal respect.

No avatarTotally disagree. In no way, shape, or form did any of the questions which I asked further implicate them in any wrongdoing, in fact the case against Mininova was already finalized, and the legal proceedings against them were already handed down. They should not have agreed foremost to the article, then to only back out of their original agreement. If they cared for the community they would have kept fighting. Sell outs, they are. Just like the Pirate Bay, they lost the will to keep fighting. Amazing only now, that the CRIA (the main plaintiffs in the case against Mininova) have now been charged with the same form of infringement they claimed Mininova was responsible for. If they'd only looked further, to keep fighting, this would never have happened. An appeal now, while the plaintiffs responsible for the demise of Mininova are in hot water, could have, and would have, been successful. Sadly I feel Mininova only kept operating with the intent to keep making ad revenue. Is it not obvious now? They did not once warn their community, that the torrents would be removed, they did not once mention, that this new "legal" "Content Distribution" was knocking on their doors.

phenac007 avatari still dont thiink that mininova were sellouts .. they mst have tried therre best to stay alive and fight for as long as possible. There had fought for a very long time and i dont think anybody expected that CRIA is gonna land in such hot water.
It takes a very high dedication and hardwork to keep up such a large site without any snags(as i am pretty sure u guyz already know, because u are doing a brilliant job at it yourself). And that cant b done if they were just corporate sellouts. But i do agree with OBS that it waz there duty to inform the loyal users and members about the torrents being removed well in advance .

YoGi avatarOh my God .. what a shocker!! I mean xxxOBSCENExxx really really cool of you to offer Erik the chance to be heard. Looking at the questions which were asked one can see that this was an open and civilized interview with no-strings attached. I too had lost respect for mininova, after seeing their lame attempt to stay afloat while raking in ad-revenue...
Nice one again Obs, you really are a star!

aSBo avatarI first lost respect for Mininova initially when they first started removing my uploads because of copyright request a few months back. I had gone to the trouble of registering in the forum with the intention of becoming an active constructive member of the community there. In no time at all it was obvious to me they had no sole or true love for file sharing or the registered uploaders that made the site what it was. All this rubbish about the owners being threatened in my mind has absolutely no credibility. Others moved their servers with great expense to ensure p2p will live on long after we have all forgotten Mininova. I am so grateful to Silverdust for introducing me to Extra Torrent where TRUTH matters. Debate is always HONEST & OPEN within this community & all members are shown RESPECT without prejudice. Thank you ADMIN for giving us a home to be cherished & thank you Obscene for this article. :)

wiredsauce avatar@aSBo I agree with you 100%, in around 2 weeks of membership here at ET I already feel a great deal of community. Versus Mininova where everything that was there for the taking was there, and no feeling of community or no showing of face. A blog post here and there, but come on. They would delete uploads without explanations, ban members without explanations, and manipulate their search engine in the oddest way I still don't know what that was about. I respect Mininova and glad they were up while they were, but would much rather be a part of a community like ET.

JuggerPat avatarI loved the post, loved the questions - but I can understand why they weren't answered. However well thought out the questions were, they were a little biased and some of those questions could possibly implement intent and possibly be used against them in future court proceedings (Which are hopefully coming as an appeal). I loved Mininova (no offense to ET - I found the movies here post WAY faster than other sites, great quality, and clean) - I had been a member for years. I don't think that Mininova didn't care about us - I think they may have a gag order or lawyers telling them what to do/say and what not to do/say. Plus, the government's on this planet are pretty scary when they're staring at you down the barrel of their corporate guns... I'm leaving racing stripes in my undies just thinking about it... But facing facts - they'll never stop file-sharing - We've been taught to share since we were toddlers. Speaking of sharing; my ISP (Canadian) blocks seeding (amongst other things) does anyone know how to get around this? I can only share as long as I'm downloading - and they max the upload way lower than the downloading...

... Where was I...

These corporate mongers who want to "protect" copyright are the very same who actually SELL INTERNET SPEEDS BASED ON DOWNLOADING! I'm surprised that it's not brought into court about the literal ties that show this hippocracy - the ones driving file sharing are owned by the companies whining about copyright - I'd be scared if I were Mininova, who knows what they're capable of...

OldHippie avatarI don't know much about the politics, legalities or behind the scenes machinations of a torrent site but what I DO know is that MININOVA was the best, bar none, for TV and music torrents for MY PARTICULAR TASTES. Mininova is gone now, like others before them, God bless `em and we better get used to it, they served me well for quite awhile. Once again I emphasize, for MY particular likings (in music and TV), no one has stepped up to the plate in their absence. When it comes to movies, ET RULES!!!!! but I do feel that the music and TV section of ET could do with a little tweaking. But, I digress.

Good idea. Maybe they'll make a conspiracy themed movie about the fall of mininova. Haha!

Good post OBS and it's so assuring to know that someone like you exist in our cold(?), cold(?) torrent world as the one who gets the File Sharing community's interests and curiosities fed, giving us food for thoughts. OldHippie avatarJust to follow up on the thought, and I know its a bit off topic (sorry Obs - your original point is well-taken) but, I remember not so long ago if a new (music) release was slated for a January 1st street-date the torrent would be available sometime by mid-December. (mininova). Now, if you're looking for an album you really HAVE to look. I mean, I've taken to googling to get stuff. It's ridiculous. People were leaking the new stuff all the time. Anyway, even I'm getting off-topic now. But as a person who is more interested in tunes than fliks it also makes me a person who's been on many, many torrent sites over the years and I'm not going to call myself an "authority" on music and torrent sites but I DO know what I like and I DO know what will keep me coming back to a particular site. Mininova was user friendly, easy to maneuver and had all MY favourite stuff almost all the time. I LIKED mininova, which brings me to ET and the "tweaking." All I really want to see is a little more organization of the torrents and better accessing or searching abilities. For the record, this is NOT a knock on ET in any way, shape or form - I appreciate what is done behind the scenes around here - but I think there's always room for improvement no matter how good we KNOW we are and a little constructive criticism hurts no-one. Peace!

OldHippie avatarAnd to get back ON topic, I agree whole-heartedly with earlier comments to the effect that Erik Dubbelboer, President, Mininova BV appeared to be running a little scared (with regards to Obs requests). Damn straight he was!!! BUT - its not too hard to lose site or your beliefs and your original mandate when you got court dates, lawyers, subpoenas and affidavits up the wazoo. And you're facing jail time that's measured in decades not days and fines in the millions. With all due respect to Obs and what he tried to do, let's not be tooooo harsh on Mr. Dubbelboer either.

25
posted by Blocked (2009-12-09 16:35:03)
No avatarIndeed all due respect to them, but regardless of "court hearings" one cannot lose faith in their original beliefs (if they ever cared truly about it to begin with and not solely profits)! The thing is, look @ Larry Flynt, for those of you do not know, he is the FOUNDER of HUSTLER Magazine. The city which he resided in tried to shut down his adult stores (calling them smut shops) but never ONCE did he give in. He wore a T-Shirt to court that said F#CK YOU! As a method of Freedom Of Speech! NEVER GIVE IN TO WHAT OTHERS WANT YOU TO BELIEVE. That is the MOST immoral thing you can do, go against your own beliefs (if you ever had them to begin with). That's my take on it. I would have fought tooth and nail to the very end and it's damn true Mininova had the money to defend themselves. Anyone denying that, is outright insane.

No avatarRegardless, it's my job as an article writer here on ET, to bring you the truth, and the facts as I best see them. The fact is, Mininova had a HUGE following, and list of supporters, and I WAS included in this list. No more however, do I follow them, after they shunned their community which in MY OPINION they did. :D

OldHippie avatarI agree with everything you say but I just want to add that the threat of having a large chunk of the rest of your life taken away from you can change a man no matter how strong his beliefs. You (Obs) may go the whole 9 yards and take her in for a touchdown and I admire you for that but there's some among us who can only go 8 1/2. Until we've walked in their shoes let's not condemn them. I was there in the sixties when battles were fought in the streets, not in cyberspace. I was a tiny part of getting an Amerikan embassy removed from my city and we didn't politely "ask" them to leave either. I've been beaten up in the streets for protesting an immoral war and I have been busted and rubber-hosed just for being in a march. The point being; you have to pick your battles, pick the ones that will advance the cause as much as possible while leaving the least amount of damage. Sometimes you have to "know when to hold up, know when to fold up" because you can't win them all and some people, as good as they are, just don't quite have the intestinal fortitude to take it the WHOLE distance and I personally (who admittedly may not have ALL the facts) can't fully condemn Mr. Dubbelboer AT THIS TIME. Cheers man. :)

They also first agreed to the interview (to speak to THEIR community) and then declined. WTF consult the attorney first and decline lol. Don't come @ me after saying you'll do something, then back down. Anyways, I reported the facts (emails) and I stated my opinion. I also respect anyone else's opinion too. Here on ET, YOUR VOICES MATTER!!!! I cannot say the same for other sites. Regardless, I'm done commenting now (unless I have to counter again) which I will do if needed :D

YoGi avatarwow! ok im with Oldhippie on the music bit. I think we have a lot of potential to improve out music section and to make looking and browsing for tunes a little more accesable. I too was a frequent user of mininova and i remember that when noth mininova and tpb were flying high i choose to stick with mininova because their search was better than tpb's. i also thought that they were amazing and doing something brilliant. but the whole way that they caved in leaving the people who chose to be with them in the dark(instead of warning them, something which they could have done) shocked me a bit. i mean from 1 day to another and pooof! i can understand many people's views that once the heat is on then its a little difficult to waltz on ice, and once people are instructed to 'not' ..then they dont.
this is not an attack at Mr.Dubbelboer , but just an open article showing what it means to be in a community which cares and is there for you. im sure mininova had to deal with millions and millions, but so will we , and im sure that the people behind the scenes here will not back down.
i mean if you going down you go down till the end. when you start something big you go down with it. immagine the shock of the people when they saw the ship capsized without even seeing the iceberg, try_panic it is...

@Oldhippie-----------> mate we've got to get the tunes flooding into here
@xxxOBSCENExxx i know you've got loads to deal with, but would you mind having a word with ADMIN about hippies comment about the music and putting everything in such a way that its easier to find and add a few more categories, maybe with aSBo's help (thanks in advance)

No avatarguys if you have a suggestion (for featured games and music) similar to what I myself have been pushing for, you must send a PM to "admin" minus quotes. Or here follow the link:

http://extratorrent.com/user/message_new/?user=admin

(admin do not kick my ass for the link :) But yeah, I agree, a featured games/software area and a featured music area is WHAT WE NEED! Unfortunately for me I don't make the decisions, the big boss does. So maybe everyone else can try persuading him ;) (I warn you he's tough to get to sway his decisions) lol!

MindTrixXx avatarIm disgusted about Mininova...so many people around the world supported them through the time they were a big file sharing site until it got into legal trouble and was dubbed down to a "content site"...I hope all users and uploaders of Mininova come to ExtraTorrent and start making a new home here...You wont get the same respect elsewhere.

Deceit avatarIt kind of feels to me like Erik didn't want to upset the powers that be with this interview so that the money they've made so far wouldn't be put in jeopardy, not knowing myself if this is possible to be infracted upon. In any case that was my first thought.

SB avatarIt seems to me that Mininova is both obtuse and childish. Mininova is a quasi-unprofessional sad sack. In closing, I assert that, in the main, Mininova has no moral qualities whatsoever. Mininova has been snuggling up to the worst classes of infernal blowhards I've ever seen for quite some time.

KING2ALL avatarI have a different take on this whole Mininova thing. They did not fall, die, or stop existing. They gave us a meeting place and simply have been forced to shut the door. What really happened???? They got people ready for a life with ET. They were a brother to run to when you needed something. They brought ET many new members. (Thank you all and welcome to my home) But Mininova is here. The programs, the movies, the music, and the people. We all pass away. Think of ET as the afterlife. Long live ET.............

kingtiger01 avatarWell its no suprise, as i learned a LONG time ago. Mininova has RARELY ever cared about the community, the primary focus was ad revenue and keeping them selves out of hot water... you watch within a few months they will either completely close the site or convert it to a commercial entity of some type. without a doubt

2canchu avatarHopefully ET will pick up on more music from the mininova refugees. It could use more. Other than that, no complaints. It's fast informative(Thanks OBS) and free. No registration, invites and whatever else it takes. On the other hand, these are sad times. The list is getting longer all the time. There's a dark cloud looming over us. Oh hell on the bright side, I think I'll watch a movie. Keep up the good work ET. Thanks

ozi avatarok this my opinion
so what if the guys at mininova didn't answer et questions even if they said yes then no.
they answered 90% of questions asked on torrentfreak.
are we supposed to be believe that if et was faced with the same thing as mininova that this site wouldn't do the same.
the community? what the f*** they mininova or any other site don't really have to answer and of our questions.
Everyone that puts illegal torrents is responsible for the sites that get shut down. i'm no angel i download them too.
But at the same time i would be pissed if some one stole my software or products just like anybody else.
Sure some of us donate to our favorite torrent sites to keep them alive but the owners of the products don't benefit from that.Sure there all rich but they earned it. If you make or produce any kind of product you would want to get paid for it.
But instead here we all are steeling them we are all guilty of the fallen torrent site.
Some on us pay Hundreds of dollars for our internet connections if we really wanted we could buy things rather then steal them but we choose not too.
It sounds like the et interviewer is trying make this site look like it the best and only the best to get more donations to keep its site alive,
witch he or she has a right too if they wish. yes this is a one of the best sites but they really don't need to come across as suks for a extra peny. Just another business tack tick. long live et and to the donating community.

MarcusVenture avatarI have been dealing with this sort of thing since Loki torrent went down. Suprnova then went down so on and so forth. BT sites all have their time so enjoy them while we/you can.
All sites try to stay up forever but it is impossible once the law enforcement puts the pressure on everyone from the ISP/site owner and all the rest. No one should ever "lose respect"
for the people who have tried and failed to keep providing us with a place to download legal torrent files for our BT programs to connect to other users. I do not know how
the law/government can shut down websites that only provide small hash files and DO NOT PROVIDE actual movies, music or software downloads from their servers. It seems sites like
Mininova could sue for loss revenue or harassment since these type sites DO NOT BREAK ANY LAWS. I could do the same thing Mininova provided by using Google,Yahoo, AskGeeves or even Bing, Microsofts
new search engine. I realize that Google does not host the hash files on any of their servers but they do facilitate a way to obtain the inormation to recieve the infomration and thats the same thing
Mininova did once removed.

Anyways, I will stop rambling on and on and just say I hope this wonderful site lasts as long as the AWESOME MININOVA did. It held its own longer than most and that should never be forgotten. Some people
can keep disrespecting MN all they want but those people held their own and did MORE for the BT community than any of the people who are now slamming them in their posts. They deserve better than that. They
should be remembered as filesharing heroes!
