A research company NPD Group recently issued a report, saying that unfortunately the American video game industry isn’t getting better in terms of sales.
The report in question mentioned some figures, demonstrating that overall video game industry sales in the US, including hardware, software, and accessories, declined by 10% to $995 million within the last year. Thus far, software sales fell steepest – 12% – to $469.5 million. At the same time, sales of accessories declined by 11% to $158.9 million, and hardware sales dropped 9% to $366.6 million. A couple months ago there was another report published, which showed that overall American game industry sales slid 14% to $743.1 million, with May 2011 being the worst month in almost 5 years.
As for the particular companies and their products, it came as no surprise that Xbox 360 still topped the sales chart. According to Microsoft, there were over 500,000 Xbox 360s sold in June 2011 only. Microsoft was also bragging that Xbox 360 was the only console which reached year-over-year increase in sales.
At the same time, Nintendo published their own statistics. In comparison with Xbox 360, Nintendo’s Wii console sales were almost twice lower – the company sold a bit more than 270,000 units. But the company also sold 386,000 units of Nintendo DS family of systems, which gave it the right to claim that those figures represented double-digit growth from May for each of its product lines. Besides, Nintendo mentioned that the Wii console has sold over 36 million units so far.
Unlike its rivals, Sony Corporation didn’t make any public announcements about the sales of its different consoles and portable game electronic devices. The only reference made by Sony spokesperson Patrick Seybold related to software sales like those of inFAMOUS 2. Meanwhile, inFAMOUS 2 was made by the company exclusively for its PlayStation 3. The company also noted that according to the recent NPD report, Sony PlayStation keeps seeing growth in software because of a strong demand for various exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles.
As for the most popular video games of June, they appeared to be Take 2 Interactive’s L.A. Noire and Duke Nukem Forever.

It's really not the time for next gen consoles, at least for Sony and Microsoft. The current consoles haven't even been pushed to their limit yet. A lot of games coming out are good and the prices are okay. The reason why the sales are declining in the U.S. is because the country is falling apart so people are tightening the belt real hard.
fuel prices go up sales go down, how can I afford to buy a game when it costs almost $150 a week just to get to work and take care of things, yes 25 gallon tank is over 100 to fill. and the oil companies over all have lower operating costs than ten years ago because of drilling and refining tech. yet they keep hiking the price! and yes it costs 31% less money to drill and refine than it did ten years ago

There are two main reasons for decreased sales, one being that frankly a lot of games simply aren't worth what they cost. The other being that people aren't financially able to spend the money for them right now. I can't speak on prices in other countries, but here in the US I personally don't like wasting $70+ on a single game when I can download a $10 game off the playstation store and get weeks or even months of enjoyment out of it, and all at 1/7th the price. Also, the habit they've developed of selling a game for $70+ then releasing several DLC (downloadable content) updates for it at an additional cost of $5-20 a pop just adds to the feeling of something being way overpriced.
I hate to say it but it seems to be going the same way as the movie industry. I mean really why would I want to pay $15+ for a single movie ticket to see a crap movie ONCE in theaters when I can just torrent/burn it for free? Now if they were to offer these new movies at say $5-10 a pop for online download where I could just dl and burn them you bet your butt I wouldn't mind buying them. They'd make money, I'd be happy, we all win.
Seems all we can do is hope that they realize that utter !@#$ doesn't sell anymore and they start pricing things accordingly. I don't know, just my two cents.
i agree they are releasing garbo rite ow wait to october

i use to buy like 10 games a year, now only buy like 3 a year because of crap games coming out as well as price and income gets lower then before will going to college and don't have the time now as i use to
now they will sue sporting goods stores, schools, gyms and little league.
how many different versions of golf, baseball, etc are needed?
when a company makes one that is just right, all they do is rename, repackage and change something negligible and sell it for more.

#11 that made me giggle, sadly it appears to be true.
I agree with demonlord4000, I used to buy a butt load of games all the time but since these prices went up I've had to cut back to 1 or 2 every 3 or 4 months. Very sad indeed, the only ps3 games im gettin this year are arkham city and the new Dragonball z game, both come out in October.

As people have commented b4,the games r crap.I've been a gamer since the spectrum48k was released nearly 20odd years ago, just recently sold me xbox b/c they want more money after paying for the box and games (Just like road tax),so ive traded it in for and a ps3,and now OMG holy crap what are game makers doing they are going backwards rather than forwards?Heres to all you game makers you should start employing people like me who scrimp and save and know real game quality for what people really want in gaming entertainment..

Well, what do you expect when you wait ten years for a particular game to be released and when it comes out, it fails to live up to the hype. You people know what game I’m talking about. Don’t pretend like it didn’t happen.
On a more serious note, I think Sony will release stronger figures at the end of the year. After all, the Vita is going to be released soon. I’m expecting good figures for Sony on this, unlike sales for the Nintendo 3DS.
