After it became clear that the religious comedy titled Salvation Boulevard wouldn’t have the expected success, the Christian movement Church of God took a decision to launch a lawsuit against Sony Pictures, IFC Films and Comcast. The companies are accused of infringing the copyright of the church’s logo. One of the goals pursued by the Church is to stop the movie’s distribution.
Church of God is recognized as one of the largest Christian movements, established more than a century ago and having over 6 million members, 1 million of them residing in the United States. However, the Church’s cross logo was only registered last year so that 3rd parties wouldn’t abuse or profit from their mark. Now the Church feels that it’s exactly what the movie studios are going to do.
The Christian movement has already filed a lawsuit against the producers of the movie titled Salvation Boulevard. The film in question premiered in the country in the middle of July. The storyline of the movie involves a pastor, performed by Pierce Brosnan, who turns faith into a business empire through his church. To some reason (maybe in attempt to add more fatalism to the plot) the church from the movie used a logo that was “clearly inspired” by the copyright protected Church of God.
According to the complaint filed by Church of God, such labels as Sony Pictures, Mandalay Pictures, IFC Films and Comcast are accused of copyright violation, coupled with trademark violation and unfair competition. The labels were allegedly using in the movie a mirrored version of the logo owned by Church of God.
The lawsuit, launched at the District Court of Eastern Tennessee a week ago, included the following accusations: the defendants were alleged of using a certain “cross” design for Salvation Boulevard promotion, which is supposed to identify some religious group at the movie plot. By filing this lawsuit, Church of God hopes to stop distribution of the movie, if not to get it burned like the witches in the dark ages. In addition, the religious movement required a substantial compensation.
By the way, it wasn’t the first time the largest movie studios are pursued in court. Just a short time ago, the tattooist of Mike Tyson launched a lawsuit against Warner Bros. over using a copy of his tattoo in the movie titled The Hangover II. Ultimately, the defendants chose to settle for an undisclosed amount.

Umm... Killer, thats not in every Church... do not assume every Church is the same... My step-son died last week, we had 2 Pastors at the Funeral and 2 more offered to come, none asked for any money, none were paid to be there... I have never seen any try... My own Church doesnt even pass around a collection plate, you tithe what you can and when you can on your own.
As for the trademark, it even says this in Sam's article, The purpose of a trademark is not solely to make money with, its so you can control how other people use the symbol. You don't want to have to sue the person, you would perfer that they don't use it against your desires... in this case to promote false beliefs as the norm.
Remember, in some country's it is even Illegal to be a Christain.. Churches in China and other places must meet in hiding, no music, no air-conditioning, small rooms with not enough capacity and with a look-out upstairs and threats of beatings and excutions if they are caught.. Do you have this firm a conviction for any of your beliefs?
Brynn217, you're right that not every church is a money-grabbing operation.
But many actually are just that - a scheme to leech money and power from regular people, abusing good faith.
You got to experience a fine example of how it should be; a church and pastors/priests/whatever folks of the cloth belong to that church who are there for the people, not for the bucks (and honestly, one should consider that some of those pastors even cough up the money to pay for their expenses themselves).
There are, however, countless examples of how it shouldn't be.
One funny detail in the posted story:
"After it became clear that the religious comedy titled Salvation Boulevard wouldn’t have the expected success, the Christian movement Church of God took a decision to launch a lawsuit..."
Had the movie been a huge hit, that same church would likely be twisting it's butt around like a drunk chick at a party, and mooching off of that success and claiming that they were "on board" from the get-go.
Instead, it isn't a success so they sue the companies... at least, that's how the story comes across.
Wrong reason to sue, in bad taste, but I have to chuckle at the least, over how those corporate money-grabbers are now getting sued for what they themselves sue others for.

It never ceases to amaze me that people complain about a church making money. First above all else if the people that go there dont complain about it why in the heII do you complain about something that is none of your business. My Pastor has written 25 best sellers and lives a very comfortable life, if steven king can write and sell books and live a very good life why can't the church have a pastor that writes books, produces movies and has other money making ideas be a money maker. No where in the Bible does it say you have to be poor and if you even read a Bible you would that proverty is a curse. Do yourself a favor and just mind your own business.
It never ceases to amaze me that people think it's perfectly normal, let alone MORALLY SOUND, that a church makes money, and is run like a profit-maximizing business.
First off: "Nowhere in the Bible"??? Shows what a fake Christian you are, must be of the Palin variety, you the Bible as well as Bachman knows history, which is to say: NOT AT ALL! I have Scripture on my side! Remember the verse about the rich man, heaven, a camel and a needle ... nah, didn't think so.
Here it is:
Mark 10:25, Luke 18:25, Matthew 19:24
And again I say unto you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
Second, you're employing a straw man here: The films satire and the criticism isn't about being poor, but against being a Greedy Big Corp Church here.
Third, you're employing a SECOND straw man here: your pastor is welcome to any money he makes OUTSIDE THE CHURCH. As long as he doesn't employ the church, i.e. via collections to extort money from folks who can't miss it anyways, or as long as he doesn't promise that 'gaWd' will love them more if they give money, he's okay. But that happens in 80% of the churches
Fourthly, isn't your Protestantism founded on this exact same criticism? Oh yes it is! Martin Luther separated from Rome because he thought the church was unduly wringing money from the poor, to the point of extortion. This is morally wrong, evil and has led to the downfall of many, like Jim Baker etc.
What's good enough for Luther, should be good enough for you, but of course, you'll screech American Exceptionalism, and go on conning the gullible, or worse, supporting that.
The last one shows that you're ignorant in both history and religion. Claiming religion condones your immoral behavior, your racism and your stupidity, like many "christians" would do these days, doesn't make it so.

@thesteelidiot: another ldi0t thinking he knows the Bible. The 1st point you mention has nothing to do with being rich its the love of money and I know you have no freaking @$$ clue what "camel to go through the eye of a needle" means in your pea minbd your picturing a camel trying to go thru a needle, what a moron.
2nd point i'm not talking about the movie read my post dumb@$$ i am specifically talking about the church making money I'm not even talking about the movie,ldl0t.
3rd my pastor can use the church to have orgies, extort money or whatever he wants because its my choice if i want to contribute to that. If i dodnt like what he does i have a choice to leave or stay. Have you attended 80% of the churches? How do you come up with this number, i'll tell you how; you pulled it out of your @$$. Support your numbers with verifiable info you cant.
your 4th point nothing but...Down here in Texas we call it Diarea of the Mouth. The more you open it the more %hit comes out.
Yes we have hipocrites and @$$holes in my the church; come on down we got room for one more. Pendejo.

|@ja7518: You sir are a moron. It never ceases to amaze me that the world is full of morons like yourself. Do us all a favor and shut your mouth. Maybe actually learn the bible more before you go bashing people who actually understand. Also for a so called "religious" person you sure have a foul mouth. Until you actually learn something please do every one a favor and stop running your ignorant mouth.||
