The US Chamber of Commerce started a promotion of a testimonial from a woman saying that her friend died because of taking some medication purchased online.

The woman’s name is Glenda Billerbeck, from Rhinebeck, Iowa. She says that Marcia Mooty Bergeron died five years ago, a day after Glenda had visited her home in Canada. In a video promoted by the US Chamber of Commerce, it is said that Marcia relied on the web for most of her shopping. The woman was complaining of flu symptoms.

After her death the coroner reported that the cause of the death was cardiac arrhythmia caused by metal toxicity. In other words, the drugs found in the woman’s system contained highly metallic and toxic material, which could mean that her prescriptions were counterfeit and poisoned her to death.

The new anti-piracy legislation of the United States called PROTECT IP Act features many supporters, including the country’s Chamber of Commerce, many trade and labour unions, a number of retailers, the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, some software developers, and manufacturers of consumer goods. The proposed legislation stipulates that all rogue websites must be closed. In order to do so, the Department of Justice is provided with the authority to order Internet service providers to block access in the United States to websites distributing counterfeit products or supporting intellectual-property theft.

The opposers of the PROTECT IP Act claim that physical and digital merchandise shouldn’t go together in the legislation. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who has also been opposing the suggested legislation, announced in the start of the year that copyright protection receives surprisingly too much attention from the US government. His office claimed in a statement that Sen. Wyden has long worked with the country’s industry on fighting the trafficking of counterfeit products like fake shoes and apparel. However, pursuing counterfeit trade in real merchandise can be effected in many other efficient ways, for example, inspecting shipping containers at the country’s ports of entry in order to identify and seize fake merchandise. The only drawback is that the entertainment industry has piggybacked on the legitimate efforts to fight counterfeit.

pjth avatarlet me guess. another tee-party idiot ? how the hell can people vote these idiots into power.

sorry for the death but if you buy medication from the internet its your own fault.

there are many good things about the internet and there a many bad ones too, but it is our decisions and what we want to purchase or see and we have to live with it. do we really need some religious freak tell us what is good for us and what not. do we not live in the USA or do we live in china where government decides what is good for us or not.

stop voting for these freaks they have no interest in what you want, if it lines there own pockets it is good and must be done. stop listening to what they tell you and look at what they are doing, once they have their seat on the gravy train. how can anybody be a supporter of any party in these days. think before you vote that you might not see crap like this happening.

here is a thought there are over 100 mill downloaders, is there a bigger group than that worldwide? think of what could be achieved if we all stand up for a free internet.

No avatarpjth maybe you should read about what the tea party is for like candidate ron paul before you blast them and say false things. tea party is all about reduced government and less taxes. they believe in letting state governments decide matters rather than federal.

JohnnyBlade avatarThe Law by Frédéric Bastiat. Easy to find in .pdf format online for free. If the Tea Party had a required reading list, this would be at or near the top. Educate yourself.. nobody else will.

menahunie avatarI am sorry about what happened to the lady; BUT WTF has this got to do with copyrights and piracy?
The bad meds the woman took has to do with counterfeit/fake drugs NOT PIRACY...
I order meds online from a business that is well known - in Canada - and not some butthole biz called Dong Wangfuk cheap drugs... In reality it is the HMO's that are freaking out about online meds due to it cutting into their profits. I was at a meeting where a Merck rep spouted crap about buying low quality meds from online is dangerous. Like Mexico.. I asked are you telling me the meds I am getting from a reputable pharmacy that buys the same meds from your company is crap? Are you telling us you your company is selling low quality meds to other countries?
You could have heard a pin drop....

I have read and looked at this Tea party and what myself have found is everyday people sick and tired of the crap. Yet many people make them out as nuts? why?

No avatarThe ONLY way the US could block p2p sites outside of the US would be to make a US only Internet! Anonymous proxy servers, and non US DNS servers would blast a complete hole in trying to block sites. Advertisers on such sites could also sue the backside off the US for lost revenue. Uncle Sam SUCKS!

No avatarWhy don't they stop wasting time and just build a wall around the country. After it's done they can cut all trade, postal services, internet and phone communication. They could then make everyone entering the country go through a thorough cavity search to make sure they don't have any discount medicine or flash drives with downloaded movies on them.

It may not fix the problem but at least the PROTECT IP supporters will be satisfied. (for now)

No avatarBasically big pharmaceutical companies in the US have been trying to increase the amount of years their patents can run for, before they are made publicly available for other companies to make generic brand versions of them. This is 100% purely about $$, and they have plenty of it to buy politicians with.

fusseltier avatarif pharmaceutical companies were regulated more and they just didn't rename and repackage older medicines to make new products to sell at higher prices, and really try to create something new like they should... there wouldn't be a problem with counterfeit medicines on the web... since then those medicines would have reasonable prices and availability and only the truly new medicine would cost more and people wouldn't be looking for alternatives online. they could go into test groups for the new meds if necessary.
