China Praised UK Internet Censorship

One would know that their online censorship plan is too strict when China praises them for it. A few weeks ago, if someone saw a headline like that, they would think the author was insane, but it’s nothing but the truth.

china-flag.jpg

A few days ago, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron claimed he wanted to stop citizens from communicating on social media if it is used to instigate violence. Today the majority of industry observers interpret this as meaning that the PM suggests to block social media sites altogether whenever civil unrest is suspected.

Unsurprisingly, blocking social media has caused lively debate, particularly in the United Kingdom. Today the discussions around possibly censoring the web have received international attention, which includes China. Today Chinese state media site “Global Times” suggested that “Western” countries were coming to realize that free speech couldn’t go unhindered online. It also said that the UK government’s wariness of the Internet and Blackberry Messenger, which are symbols of freedom of speech, was a forced reaction, which might have upset the Western world. However, the open discussion of containment of the web in UK had given rise to another opportunity for the entire world. Media in the United States and United Kingdom earlier criticized developing countries for curbing freedom of speech, but the new attitude of the UK would hopefully help appease the quarrels over the future management of the worldwide web.

Meanwhile, the Chinese advocates of an unlimited development of the web are recommended to think twice about their original ideas, because there are a lot of posts and articles inciting public violence online, which could cause tremendous damage when tweeted without control. In this case, the governments would have the only choice to shut down those sites and arrest the agitators.

The “Western” part of the world, however, believes that the UK Prime Minister should think twice how he is going to prevent rioting. Of course, any move to crack down on rioters will receive no resistance but help and support. At the same time, the attempts to control the web in any way are an extremely slippery slope with respect to free speech. In other words, there should be difference between Cameron’s policy and China’s policy at the very least.

menahunie avatarYea you go China - NOT. Case in point. You cheat on your taxes, steal money as a government worker, make x rated movies, and allot more. Know what happens in China? You get a death sentence and a bullet in the back of your head behind the courthouse. Average time sentence is carried out is two hours and your dead. Now for a few years they have these death vans roaming around the country side doing executions; then take body parts and sell them on the world black market. Yep China is a peoples paradise even when their own people try to say enough and they squash them under tank tracks.....

D4T4 avatarWoohoo menahunie, that sounds like a Hollywood movie! 1. At least they admit to bad human rights. 2. Look at your comment then substitute the word "China for America". How many western countries still have the death penalty? Yours does. How much can the USA really teach the world about morals when they are responsible for screwing it up themselves? The USA is trying to control the World Wide Web and threaten other countries who don't tow the line. It won't be long until the rest of the world realise what's happening then f*%k them off. For "Death Vans" read CIA and Guantanomo Bay. Oh by the way my Dear, don't forget that's it's China who is loaning your wonderful Government the Dollars to bail them out of the mess that they have landed the fiscal world in. Have fun Honey and remember that the Egyptians and the Romans were once also a Superpower and look at them now! Open your eyes, it's a big wide world out there and I've seen most of it.

Interesting that people like you keep blaming the united States for every problem this world has; yet ignore the own crap their own government does. As for you whining about Gitomo? Why don't you cry to your own government to take all these poor innocent dears into your own homes and STFU... You won't coz ur a hypocrite and know the people at Gitmo will kill you just as soon as me or anyone else... As for the trillions of bonds China has bought - GOOD then they have a very good reason not to fuk us up.. Is it ur pissed coz China didn't spend all that money on ur loser ass hole country? LMFAO.... Finally the USA isn't trying to control the world wide web u stupid moron. The USA invented the world wide web. The European Union is trying to control the world wide wed by whining the DNS servers should be in the European Unions Control not the USA... Yea right that would be better than where it is now. The Web is evolving and soon will be at a point where DNS Servers won't be needed anymore..

danny226 avatarlol @ u all gerrin stressed over news

@ MenahunieIsRetarded yep your spot on, the net was invented in the uk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Sir Timothy John "Tim" Berners-Lee, OM, KBE, FRS, FREng, FRSA (born 8 June 1955), also known as "TimBL", is a British physicist, computer scientist and MIT professor, credited for his invention of the World Wide Web, making the first proposal for it in March 1989. On 25 December 1990, with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student at CERN, he implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet.

menahunie avatarTim Berners Lee on made a proposal in 1989; yet he was beaten out on the invention of the internet. So FU. Trolls..
If it is really as you trolls and flamers claim... THEN WHY ARE THE INTERNET DNS SEVRES IN THE USA?
Here is why..

This is history:

Who Invented the Internet?

Despite what he may have claimed, Al Gore did not invent the Internet. The Internet was invented in the United States during the late 1950s to the 1970s by a group of researchers and scientists at the newly formed Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) after the former Soviet Union launched Sputnik. Realizing that the United States had suffered a great technological blow by allowing the USSR to hold the first successful satellite launch, ARPA set out to create a brand new technology unlike anything that had ever been done before; and the Internet was the result of their hard work.

Although there were many people working for ARPA on the Internet project, there are five individuals who can really be credited with actually creating the Internet. Among them was J. C. R. Licklider, the head of the Information Processing Technology Office at ARPA. In his position, he thought up the idea of the Internet itself as a way of potentially unifying humans from around the United States (and the world) through a universal network.

J C R Licklider Who Invented the Internet?

Because Licklider's previous experience was not in actual computer programming, however, he had to recruit others in order to help create the Internet for ARPA. The obvious choice was Lawrence Roberts. Roberts went on to lead the team which would eventually develop ARPANET (the early precursor to the Internet) in 1967. He was the scientist to finally utilize the proposed method of packet switching first created by Leonard Kleinrock. The Internet still uses packet switching as its primary way of transferring data.

After several years of work, a computer at the University of California, Los Angeles, became the first computer to connect to the Internet. In time, three more computers would be connected to the Internet in 1969, leading to the start of the Internet revolution.

Despite the massive success that Lawrence Roberts had received while working at ARPA, he promptly quit his position in 1973 in order to form the world's first commercial network, known at that time as Telenet. However, in his place, he assigned Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf to continue working on the Internet at ARPA. Together, Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf worked to modify the original method of packet switching pioneered by Roberts and Kleinrock and eventually created what is now known as the TCP/IP protocols. It was at this point when ARPANET was finally changed to the more easily pronounced Internet.

D4T4 avatarYou're almost correct menahunie but as per usual you're wearing yor USA blinkers. ARPA did manage to link a few computers together but the web as we know it was indeed invented by Tim Berners-Lee in Good Ole Blighty. Now go take your tablets like a good girl and go back to your cell. Exercise time is over.

No avatarMenahunie maybe you didnt read what I wrote before so Ill quote it again:
"Next time get your facts straight before you run off at the mouth like a b*tch, damn, you make the great country of America look bad, everyone will get the wrong idea and think all Americans are arrogant f*cks like you,do us a favor and shut the f*ck up! Seriosly, shut up before you make us look any more arrogant or retarded."

Now youve changed your argument to "the internet" insted of "the world wide web" well which is it?!? Whichever one suits your argument best I suppose. So I guess your backup argument now is you cant have the www without internet,so by those standards I guess you couldnt even use the internet without a phoneline,so the Scotish(probably also a "loser ass hole country" by your retarded standards as well? Am I right?) inventor Alexander Bell is to thank for that, inventor of the telephone.

Also,DIRECT QUOTE FROM MENAHUNIE ---> "If it is really as you trolls and flamers claim... THEN WHY ARE THE INTERNET DNS SEVRES IN THE USA?"

Awnser: Not all of them are, once again, get your facts straight before you run off at the mouth. There are DNS servers scattered all over the world, biggest ones outside of the US are in Germany and China.
Once again,I must repeatedly call you a retard and ask you...nay,beg you,to SHUT THE F*CK UP because youre only further embarresing yourself and making others look bad.

Are we done yet? Because making you look like someone with the knowlage of a 3rd grader is tiring me out,so please shut up this time and stop further degrading the American image, you asshat.

No avatarTim Berners invented html protocol, not everything that is anything on the web. He used existing technology and existing ideas and made it more easily viewable. Yes he developed the way we all view the web and how most consider the internet. Though the creation of the internet belongs to ARPA. email belongs to ARPA, TCP/IP belongs to ARPA. DNS belongs to Paul Mockapetris while at ISI of University of Southern California. After all the structures of what could make the web was in place Tim Berners developed HTML which allows use to view pages as they are today.

This is why all the structures of the internet and "world wide web" are in the USA. Stop the lame pissing contest as the creation of the internet and www can't be pointed at one person or country. I have to say most of the structure and work was done in the US it wasn't all Americans working on it. I think it would be hilarious if a Chinese person created html instead and I bet all of you would be trying to disprove it as you want to believe your own country is better/bigger/greater.

I still find it surprising(and mildly humorous) how arrogant all of you guys are. Blaming China for this, America for that, proclaiming your own country as more superior and technological than all. A reporter will almost never report how it really is and will always twist information and leave out other information to make it seem so much worse than it really is(and some times better).

Oh well I have spent enough time here. Go back to your arrogant talk again as I'm leaving.

No avatarAhh, you've got to love it when an American says how evil a country like China is when it's largely US money and US consumers that keep the Chinese Communist Party strong enough to remain in power, enabling its Agencies of Evil to drive around in "death vans" and give citizens "a bullet in the back of the head" whenever the mood takes them. You're locked in a death-waltz with them. The perfect partners, really: One who greedily and selfishly wants to make as much profit as possible by ripping off its own citizens via the mark-up on cheaply-made foreign goods and the other who's happy to make vast sums of money by exploiting its own citizens as cheap labour for foreign markets.

But you probably don't want to acknowledge any of that, because you were no doubt busily multitasking, browsing an online retailer and clicking "Add to Cart" for some item that's an affordable price thanks to its being manufactured cheaper overseas, maybe even in the People's Republic of (Evil) China.

At least some of us know and recognize that we're part of the problem. But, for some people, I'm sure that will be evidence of some kind of "self-hating liberal" thing, right? Whatever. Go back to twirling Johnny Ringo's idiot-revolver some more; it makes you look totally badass-awesome or something. And remember to keep buying those consumer goods, the PR(E)C needs your money. How else is it going to afford to buy bullets and the petrol for its death vans?

Besides, isn't killing Commies a *good* thing? You're indoctrinated with that in school, right?

fusseltier avatarif i remember it correctly, starting with reagan, corporations were allowed to outsource jobs.
i remember when i was in college, people taking programming to get a degree, and a few years later, i saw the first big cut was seimens of i think around 3000 people. that was a long time ago, and its gotten worse.
corporations in america were allowed to put profit over national security by allowing manufacturing and intellectual jobs to leave the country and be taken up by china and india.
people are brainwashed that they will get cheaper products, and then it all comes from china, and that money all supports chinese military and regime. thats why they are still here and russia isn't, russia couldn't afford to keep up its crap, but china can since they get everyones money.
now china wastes so much natural resources making defective low quality junk and garbage that fills rivers and landfills too.
american companies are allowed to only have managers and a brand to be a company and have chinese slave labor make everything.
then, the american government allows mexican and philippine workers into the country to work for half the pay of an american, driving all wages down and forcing many americans out of jobs and to lose their houses.
foreigners in america have more rights than an american, and the government is too busy bowing to minority groups and special intrest groups, plus being funded by lobbyists that are really pulling the strings.
corporations have more rights than people, profit is first, people, family, community mean nothing to the government and corporations.
there is no security like there used to be.
why can a european company provide benefits, pension and 4-6wk vacations and still make profit and american companies have to cut all benefits and outsource jobs so the managers can make bonuses?
they need to get rid of both parties, and ban anyone that has ever held office and start with some new people with integrity and backbone and stop the pussyfoot games and kissing up to every single persons complaint or issues and do what is best for the country and everyone, not what is best for corporations that are not creating jobs and if they do, they are not jobs to be proud of anyway and have no future.

No avatarNot really sure how the government could control Facebook when there is social unrest about.

Given the amount of social unrest in Britain, largely for Brown's and Blair's previous actions and non-actions, could this lead to an indefinite suspension of access to Facebook accounts throughout the UK? Especially if Cameron doesn't back down on 'welfare reforms' which are actually very serious welfare cuts. It really comes to something when the review bodies themselves say many more disabled people will be made homeless as a result.

Tackling the root cause of social unrest and rioting is far more important than trying to stop social communication, much of which seemingly took place via the Blackberry network which is not monitorable by the Police.

Anything which hurts the poorer section of the community (who are already as poorly off as many in Third World countries ie no disposable income, serious risk of losing a roof over their heads, unable to afford heating (The UK regularly has whole months where temperatures stay below freezing in the winter, especially in the north, though not unknown across the whole of Britain) and people getting deeper and deeper into serious debt), will most surely cause some kind of serious back-lash.

We can't be far off mass demonstrations(ie millions of people) demonstrating on the streets in Britain. Once busy commuter streets are blocked by a multitude of people demonstrating peacefully, will this ALSO be called social unrest?

Most of all though, all it takes is for people to send a message around to use a non-UK based 'anonymous' forum to send messages around, or to use 'coded meassages' via Facebook or similar. The government can't stop Internet communication short of cutting off the UK Internet, which in itself would make millions demonstrate or riot, quite aside of multi-billion lawsuits from very rich corporations.

Similarly, short of disabling the entire mobile phone network across Britain, I don't see how they can prevent social communication across the UK at times of rioting. I say times of rioting as this surely isn't the first and last such time. I'm just surprised rioting hasn't started sooner and myself predicted riots within the next 5 or 10 years.

The best way of stopping rioting is stopping huge banker bonuses (and fatcat corporation/council senior executive 20% or more pay increases a year culture), stopping 'stupid' profit levels by large companies and the oil and untility companies (Tesco's increased their profits by 8% when the rest of us are suffering 5% cuts per annum), and acting to stabilze food prices.

People have been rioting in Britain because they see no future prospects work-wise, and know low paid jobs cause very little if any benfit to themselves. They find it harder and harder to afford food to eat and know they face long cold winters ahead, and see themselves under attack from a government that is seen to support the very well-off at the expense of everyone else, and they can't even relax with a drink or two as alcohol costs so much. Is it any wonder people have been rioting?

Gaspode avatarWelfare Reform - Needed to stop benefit breeders and bone idle scroungers draining the country dry, not to reduce or remove help for those who are GENUINELY in need. The benefit bill for the UK is now in excess of the income tax bill which is why tax increase and service cuts are inevitable. Why? because the benefit culture is now the norm in the UK and needs to be stopped. The review bodies are acting politically, i.e. kneejerk reaction to change. Tell me, how will ANY benefits be paid when there are no funds to pay them?

We can't be far off mass demonstrations(ie millions of people) demonstrating on the streets in Britain. Once busy commuter streets are blocked by a multitude of people demonstrating peacefully, will this ALSO be called social unrest? - No, peaceful demonstration is called peaceful demonstration. Smashing windows to steal flatscreen tvs and blu-ray players or running down and killing shop owners sons IS illegal and therefore social unrest.

People have been rioting in Britain because they see no future prospects work-wise, and know low paid jobs cause very little if any benefit to themselves. Utter rubbish the level of migrant workers in the UK is on the rise. Please note the key word there is "workers"? It seems that people from eastern Europe have absolutely no problems finding work in the UK? Mind you actually going out and looking for work probably has something to do with it. And if the jobs are of 'little benefit' then benefits need cutting to MAKE the jobs of benefit.

"They find it harder and harder to afford food to eat and know they face long cold winters ahead, and see themselves under attack from a government that is seen to support the very well-off at the expense of everyone else, and they can't even relax with a drink or two as alcohol costs so much." - More liberal minded waffle. Can't afford food yet seemingly have no problems buying and running Backberrys? (go on, someone say a mobile phone is either a) essential or b) a basic right) nor are there any problems seemingly buying branded clothing and jewelry (and thus ironically supporting the companies which post huge profits with associated huge bonuses for their staff) and neither are there any issues accessing the internet which by the way is a really great way to LOOK FOR A JOB! As for the alcohol comment, THAT alone makes me pray for the welfare reforms to come quicker and harder. These riots were no more than a spate of criminal acts which included murder, looting, theft, assault and criminal damage which were committed by people who have no interest in anything other than themselves. So please, stop making excuses for people who really don't care about a society that is already bending over backwards to help them. Maybe they should try helping themselves for a change?

No avatarRe Gaspode

First, bet you've never gone short in your life, except when you haven't gotten to the loo quickly enough!

Sure there are a minority of scroungers, and some rioters can afford Blackberries (£15 a month on some contracts, phone free)

Unfortunately helping themselves by looting is the only way many youngsters can help themself, as they have NO job prospects.

European workers can often find jobs either because they have a lot of lolly coming into the country and can afford upmarket accomodation, or set up self-employment, or they are temporary jobs that won't employ British workers as they'd have to pay all the employer contributions, which many employers simply don't do for foreign workers. It can also be remarkably difficult to relieve a UK citizen of some jobs without a lot of hassle.

My point is that if the government clobbers ALL bebefit claimants, including the genuinely disabled just to hit a minority who are sponging it, wheer does this leave all the GENUINE bebefit claimants.

5 Million people in Britain are as poor as poor people in Third World Countries (mostly hot, so there is some natural food and no wretchedly cold winters!). This in the long term will lead to a huge amount of potential trouble.

Something like 99.5% of the wealth in the UK in the UK is owned by one half a percent of the population.

This means for every £20 (divide by 400) £19.95 is owned by the 1 in 200 wealthy leaving 5p to distribute among the remaining 199 out of 200 people. no wonder so many people in the UK are very wretchedly poor.

The AVERAGE (including the better off) family income in Ebbw Vale and many valleys in S Wales and the North-East is just over £2000 per year per FAMILY, not per person.

So Gaspode BEFORE YOU GO PONTIFICATING, YOU try living as a single person on £2000 a year. Then think what this must be like for a FAMILY.

Secondly, I DON'T condone rioting, but it is certainly caused by donkeys years of unfettered or unbridled capitalism, supported by the 'likes' of damned Thatcher, damned Brown and damned Blair as well as Cameron's mob, to boot.

As for mass peaceful demonstrations stopping bankers and many senior executives getting to work (and earning that 'nice' lttle 'extra' bonus) I guarantee within less than an hour of busy roads and throughfares being blocked that the Police, acting on Government orders would be reading the riot act and going in with threatening force against said PEACEFUL demonstrators.

Just be very glad YOU are not one of the real and genuine EXTREMELY POOR who happen to live in the UK.

The real world in the USA, not often made public is the desperately poor in the USA DYING of starvation in the streets and dying of treatable illness where they can't find charity medical help.

The real world in the UK is people dying of starvation and/or dying of cold and hypothermia! This is NOT liberal minded waffle, it's the TRUTH and plain FACT. Ask any coroner.

Wake Up Gaspode (doesn't sound a British name anyway?). Get REAL.
