Considering the worldwide attention to hacking groups and their activities, some may realize that hacktivists are people that can do their work sometimes better than the employees of international corporations. In other words, they are professionals. And any professional can be hired. As it turned out, the tariffs of hackers are not that unrealistic.
While getting a hit man is without a doubt very expensive (and also quite dangerous), if you only want to launch an attack on some online service, it would be quite cheap – about $10 per hour. Online reports reveal that for a few hundred dollars anyone can go to some underground forum in order to find and hire someone (supposedly Russian) who is able to launch a distributed denial of service (also known as DDoS) attack on a website.
Generally, DDoS attacks rely on botnets, in other words – networks of PCs all running malicious software which fire off requests to a certain online service. Meanwhile, according to security experts, the owners of the PCs used are usually unaware that they are part of a DDoS attack. This is how an attack starts.
Then, at the moment when enough page requests are sent, the receiving website’s servers get overwhelmed and consequently crash, which results in website shut-down at least for a while. The result depends on the website size – larger and more trafficked websites would have better defences. However, a large enough network of computers is able to take those down too.
Now, as we can see, everyone can afford to hire a hacker in order to launch a DDoS attack, because this service would only cost around 5-10 dollars an hour. Although the prices vary, it was reported that for around 1,200 dollars everyone is able to hire a DDoS attacker for a whole month. Moreover, these days some underground forums are even selling botnet software for people who want to try and mount an attack themselves! The software in question is called Darkness, and its developers claim that when having 20,000 bots in the network, the program is able to take offline virtually any website. Meanwhile, just as with lots of good software packages, Darkness creators also launched a version of their software available for free.
