Below you can find recommendations on how to ensure your safety when using Internet café services, because they can sometimes be quite suspicious places.
Today many people are looking for the online variety while being away on vacation. However, getting online in a strange locale sometimes carries some risks, which means that you need to consider some basic preventive measures in order to keep the dangers at bay.
While several years ago it was all right to go a fortnight without checking emails, today this is close to unthinkable for some. That’s why people have to visit internet cafés, which can appear suspicious places, using outdated computers. Therefore, their virus protection and firewalls can be outdated as well. Worse still, some of such PCs might also carry different spy programs like keyloggers, able to track your activities at a computer.
So, if you want to ensure your safety when surfing the Internet somewhere else, do not type any personal information into other computers. As you can understand, this means no online banking and shopping. Do not forget to clear the history when you’re done and log out of all services you used, like your mailbox.
Today, internet cafés are less popular among the vacationers, because people prefer to take their own smartphones or notebooks with them when leaving somewhere. Sometimes, roaming deals are quite affordable, so people get daily or weekly plans for surfing the web. Those who are looking for another online service may consider using Wi-Fi. However, some precautions should be taken here as well. Despite the fact that Wi-Fi networks in hotels (those demanding a password for access), or public Wi-Fi accessed by buying a rub-off card, are usually quite secure, it is better to make sure that all your software, particularly virus protection and firewalls, is relevant.
Meanwhile, when using unprotected Wi-Fi networks – at the airports and other places, you should know that anyone with a laptop and proper software is able to read everything right along with you! So when using such wireless spots, it is recommended to be careful and use some common sense.
At the same time, while you are away on vacation, the intruders might break into your home wireless network and perform unauthorized downloads, which usually leads to legal trouble. That’s why you need to make sure you turned your home Wi-Fi or the whole router off when leaving.
