German authorities have called on local outfits to boycott “like” buttons from the social networks, or face a fine. According to the media reports, the Data Protection Commissioner’s Office in the federal state of Schlswig-Holstein has required that all organizations remove such social plugins as the “like” button.
The privacy watchdog outfit claims that social networks like Facebook are contravening German and European rules by using data gathered from the users to flog to advertisers. It has released a statement, saying that Facebook was building a broad individual and for members even a personalized profile, which actually infringed German and all-European information protection legislation.
The outfit accused a social network of failing to take an adequate effort in allowing its users know that ad companies would be able to see the pages that had been “liked” by the users. In other words, Facebook is considered to be misleading about the widget. Meanwhile, there was scanty information of users and there were no choice. At the same time, the wording in the conditions of use and privacy statements of the social network didn’t nearly meet the legal requirements for compliance of privacy consent.
Taking all the requirements of the watchdog into account, it is clear that the outfit demands that all site owners should stop the passing on of their user information to Facebook in the United States through deactivating the respective services. Moreover, there could be reprimands for those organizations that fail to ban social plugins within the next month. According to the watchdog, there will be further steps taken, including formal complaints for public entities or fines for private companies.
Meanwhile, the outfit has been known to be arguing with Facebook over the issue of its use of online analytics for a while now, and has been working over investigation on the American-based information harvesting giant. The recent statement said that it was still possible for the social network to modify its behavior. The suggested alternatives were European and other social media taking the protection of their users’ privacy rights much more serious.
In order to avoid a full profiling by Facebook, the users were recommended to close their accounts, or think twice before pushing the “like” button on someone’s fan page.

Couldn't Facebook simply modify their conditions of use and privacy statements?
That or, just make it where 'liking' isn't available to the forbade areas?
at least the EU protects its people, unlike the US where the corporations have more rights than the people... and junk mail, and unwanted advertising is more important than peoples privacy.
'Like' and 'Dislike' buttons are a creepy form of peer pressure. Everyone should ban 'em.

hmmm this got me thinking: why not introduce the like/dislike button here at et? especailly the dislike button...it could help in sending a clear message to keep some ranter's mouth shut lol

Umm.. I have been wanting a dislike button on Facebook for a long time, they do not have one... I am tired of FB asking me if I like some such stupid stuff like Sarah Palin over and over again... why can't I just hit Dislike and have it go away forever...
Wow it's COMPLETELY unlike Germany to make totalitarian, arbitrary decisions on how their people live... oh... wait.. nevermind...
if you dont want people to know you 'like' something then dont click on the 'like' button..
no-one forces you to do it...
stupidity at it's highest level.
Like is on evry page here on ET just do a check how many extra temp files you get in a CC cleaner scan, thousands after serfin ETs pages
Use to take seconds to wipe, now it can take 15mins and I've never been on facebook or any other social networks, still I get loads of
crap "see what this person is doing" Who gives a Fork what others are doing, Please get rid of this Crap from ET.
the solution is:-
DON"T CLICK ON THE LIKE BUTTON...!!!
Who cars if they keep track of when you click on the like button. Its not like you will be able to run from advertisements if you do anything online. If Europe or Germany dont like it they need to just ban it if its that big of a deal. On their end though. A US website shouldn't have to follow the rules of some other country just because they believe different. If you dont like it dont visit the site. Pretty simple.
