After Steve Jobs left Apple, he tapped Tim Cook to replace him as the chief executive of the company. Currently it seems that the new CEO has some big shoes to fill. Of course, it would be hard to replace such an outstanding person as Steve Jobs, but the latter is sure that the 50-year-old Alabama native would be up to the task.
In his resignation letter to the board of directors, the former chief executive of the world’s known company wrote that he strongly recommended to execute their succession plan and name Tim Cook as the corporation’s CEO.
Actually, not many people outside the circle of Apple watchers have ever heard of him, while much less even have confidence in Cook governing the world’s most valuable technology corporation. At first sight, Tim Cook can seem quite a weird choice to follow the maverick leadership of Steve Jobs, whose qualities like mercurial charm, unmatched charisma and impeccable marketing instincts determined his position of a tech superstar from the very day he founded the company known worldwide as Apple.
On the contrary, Cook is very shy about talking in public. He is also known as a nuts-and-bolts logistics person. In other words, he seems not quite well suited to play the role of evangelist-in-chief, usually performed by Jobs.
Tim Cook, the child of a retired shipyard worker, grew up in the little town of Robertsdale, Alabama. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, he earned an MBA from Duke University. Afterwards, he had worked for a dozen years in PC logistics at IBM, and even was a vice president at Compaq. Finally, he moved to Apple back in 1998 to take a position of senior vice president of operations. New Apple CEO is still single.
Tim Cook won early kudos at the company for fixing its manufacturing flaws. He also closed some of the Apple’s factories and shifted production to contract manufacturers. With his success mounting, he managed to be 3 times named as the company’s interim leader, when Steve Jobs’ health problems forced him to take medical leave.
The colleagues described Cook as unflappable, calm and quiet person. He is characterized as a workaholic, reportedly writing emails at 4:30 in the morning. As it usually happens with workaholics, he is known to be the first one in and last one out of the company’s office – even in IBM he was known for working on holidays and weekends.
