Famous online communications company Skype announced it would snap up GroupMe for an undisclosed amount. GroupMe is a provider of mobile group messaging applications. The announcement came 3 months after software giant Microsoft announced that it would acquire Skype for about $8.5 billion.
Last week, Skype claimed that the company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire GroupMe, a provider of mobile group messaging services allowing users to stay connected and make decisions. Today Skype refused to disclose the financial details of the future deal. According to the company’s representatives, the deal in question would help Skype to go on with its drive to provide a global multi-modal and multi-platform communications experience. A provider, established last year, has an application working across mobile devices and platforms and allowing users both text and make conference calls among a group of contacts. That’s why the company was considered a perfect addition to the Skype products.
The experts confirm that the acquisition of GroupMe would complement the company’s leadership in voice and video communications, because Skype would be able to provide best-in-class text-based communication as well as innovative features letting users to connect, share locations and pictures and make plans with their closest friends.
At the same time, the cooperation still faces increasing competition from Apple, Google and Facebook, providing new smartphone messaging services, including group messaging. But Skype claimed that the company has a shared vision of creating software and experiences representing the daily communications choice for all users. It also promised to continue seeking the top talent and technology in order to make that vision a reality.
