The most popular Internet service provider in the United Kingdom, BT, was recently required to block access to all material that can be located on Newzbin2, following the decision of the High Court of Justice.
Nevertheless, Newzbin2’s team promised that they would do whatever they can to avoid any filtering instruments that might affect their consumers to access the database of the above mentioned service. Indeed, they’ve kept their word. This online service is part of the Usenet network, offering indexed binaries and covering different ranges of content (films, games, TV shows, and much more). Up to date, however, the team of the service has been successfully managing to survive a few attempts to have Newzbin2 taken offline and now, it looks like they managed to dodge the censorship instrument of BT called Cleanfeed.
According to the court ruling, Internet service provider was also demanded to adapt its Cleanfeed system to block access to kids sexual abuse material and, by the end of the next month, it would include Newzbin2 website, too. The representative of the broadband provider claimed that it was a helpful judgment clarifying this complex matter. The ruling clearly states that copyright owners need to prove their claims and convince the court to make an order. Meanwhile, the ISP has consistently said that copyright owners need to take this route. It promised to return to court after the summer in order to say which kind of order it thinks is appropriate.
At the same time, Nicholas Lansman, ISPA Secretary General, was saying this past summer that the concerns regarding over-filtering, ease of circumvention and stricter encryption are widespread and recognized by many. This means that Internet filtering is not panacea able to stop copyright violation from being committed on the Internet. Instead, according to the results of the government-commissioned Hargreaves Review, the industry and the authorities should better focus on providing the consumers innovative, entirely-licensed material services. In other words, it’s time for the entertainment industry to give its consumers what they are clearly demanding.
Now, the developing team of Newzbin2 took a decision to release a new application in order to avoid being listed in Cleanfeed’s blacklist.
