For decades now open-sources have been running dual boot set ups featuring both Windows and Linux running alongside from a standardized boot. Nevertheless, the news is that in the new Windows 8, the firmware known as UEFI is going to replace the low level BIOS along with the ability to lock down PCs so that operating systems should be digitally signed through “secure boot”.
The industry couldn’t stay calm after this news. Ross Anderson, Cambridge University security engineering professor, claimed that Microsoft pushing for obligatory UEFI support would mean that such “unauthorized” operating systems as Linux or FreeBSD just won’t be able to run at all. The professor pointed out that it would mean an increased lock-in, less consumer choice and, as usual, less space to innovate. Overall, the entire idea is absolutely unlawful and mustn’t succeed.
However, software colossus Microsoft was quick to deny that its new operating system has been specifically designed to lock out Linux. The company’s representative said that secure boot was not a tool to lock out OS loaders, but rather a policy allowing firmware to validate authenticity of components. Microsoft has posted a long description of UEFI and the OS support for the next-generation security feature, trying to prove that it won’t control the settings on computer firmware which either control or enable secured boot from any OS different from Windows.
However, Linux fans remain a bit concerned about the secure booting feature of Microsoft that might lock their favorite operating system out. Moreover, the media already report that Linux Australia members have filed a complaint to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about the plans of software giant and been told they have a case.
The argument of the group was that any software or hardware will need to be signed by Microsoft or any other relevant original equipment manufacturer to be able to run. This clearly means that alternative OS like Linux (and maybe even older versions of Windows) won’t work without the secure keys bundled with new OS releases and many more.
In respond, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has hinted that the open-sources may have a case if they provided more information on the issue. That’s why Linux Australia is planning to bring the matter up again and consider a larger campaign against Windows 8.

SaM, I think you have a typo here that SpellCheck missed: "won’t be bale to run". It should be "be able", and since bale is an actual word, SpellCheck (if you use it) skipped over it automatically. Sorry, I worked for 15+ years in clerical & Administrative Assistant jobs in various offices, proofreading is a force of habit.
Also, MS was accused of being a monopoly, and this exact type of accusation would prove just that: No other OS could run on any computer that has Win 8 on it. They would be slicing their own throats if people would just rebel against them and chose another OS completely.

you wouldn t be able to use firefox or chrome etc if ms has their way ? ?
versions of os churning out of microsoft were nothing but sugar-coated eye candies appealing to the eyes but basically no big differences. it's the way of the corporate culture like HP, churning out so many different models of printers with different ink containers, trying so hard and so heartless to rip you off. buying microsoft's newly released os is like buying a half baked pie or, more accurate, a half built house, sold to you with countless problems and the contractor never finished or completed the constructions with constant roof leaking, unsecured windows and doors, cheap materials and lousy workmanship. then, after couple of years, the contractor suddenly moved away to a new jobsite, started building new tract houses with newer concept of layout, the square footage of the new houses would be always bigger, more expensive, but the building materials would be the same or cheaper and again, the seller would lure and force you to move in first.
although the facade of these houses would look nicer, the living square footage bigger, but the lot would become smaller and smaller, so the front yards and the backyards would be smaller, albeit tiny or non-exist, building materials cheaper, new residents would still have to face and deal the constant repairs of leaking and security problems. microsoft is not like those real reputed housing constructors like toll brothers, shea homes, mbk or standard pacific, microsoft is like the notorious kb-homes builder, always offering inferior designed and built houses with cheap materials and tons of problems once you move in.
you can count on if the republicans get in office again, microsoft along with any other corporation can and will walk all over everyone and not give it a second thought.
this has to be illegal, how do they have the right to do that to someones personal property? i hope that wouldn't have an effect on removable drives...
and since windows 7 hasn't been out that long and they are already releasing windows 8, just more proof that they have no confidence in their product and try to force people to keep buying their crap because they do have a monopoly.
its time for the US government to grow a pair and stand up for the peoples rights not the corporations rights, but first they have to repeal the bush admins law giving corporations the same rights as an individual.
it will be hacked and then able to run os side by side

@ demonlord, I agree ms trys its heart to stop us pirating it and they always find a way
No matter how microcrap tries to spin it they are trying to now control the hardware YOU BUY. Their market share is falling every year. many entities are migrating to Linux for a very good reason.. For mission critical applications and situation where everything has to run without fail - like in command and control in combat they are using Linux.
You will get a good laugh out of this; it would be funny if it wasn't so serious:
There are more articles.
BUT United States Navy and other military branches tried windows and it crashed. Most notable was a war ship using micro-crap 2000; the crash was so bad the ship had to be towed to port.
So they use LINUX instead.
Linux had come a very very long way in a few short years that it is almost as easy as micro crap to use for the uninformed masses.
Check out Ubuntu very very easy to use...
I have a Linux box running and it is go for over ONE YEAR with nothing happening, no crashes, nothing I just look at it from time to time. I can't say that for the boxes running microcrap..
lets just say linux over ms and its funny that they would try to force out firefox and chrome when ms ie was created they went to apple for help lols
oh and dont get that wrong im pc over mac every day of the year

yeah mena, that was the aircraft carrier enterprise if i am not mistaken, they were running windows NT.
some raytheon crap was probably involved too... but you'd never hear about that.
