Peter Jackson Outraged At Leak Of "The Lovely Bones" To BitTorrent

The upcoming January 15th release of the new Peter Jackson film "The Lovely Bones" was highly anticipated by many. Just like all Peter Jackson films, the much respected Hollywood producer had received a large amount of support from critics and film-goers alike for this new movie.

Lovely Bones ?

As of a few days ago, the Screener of his popular new film had already hit the bandwidth of millions via the BitTorrent protocol, and thus set off a new wave of controversy surrounding torrents.

"My work is an art form, although I do intend to share this art with the world, I cannot continue to do so at a cost to my own enterprises and investments without any chance of coming up short on production costs..." claimed Peter Jackson.

He stated that although up until how he did not hold a grudge against file sharing, he is heavily disappointed that the leak even happened to begin with. He also stated that "those responsible for the leak will be brought to justice with the maximum prosecution of the law in mind" and that "anyone who is caught illegally downloading the film will also be prosecuted to the fullest", both statements which are sure to lose him a few fans.

This time of the year is known to production companies and those of us in the BitTorrent world, as "Screener Season", where before the Oscars (and other awards ceremonies globally) the pre-release of "Screeners" are sent to various film critics, and award voters to determine if a film is going to be allowed to gain recognition for a nomination.

The only real difference here is that it's a nearly perfect copy, released way ahead of the actual theater date, and that it may hold somewhat of an effect on the sales in the theaters, according to Jackson at least. I doubt though, that it will hold much ground, as some of the most pirated movies on the internet have also went on to become some of the world's most significant financial blockbusters.

In the end, it's the same greed of the Hollywood interests which pre-release these types of screeners for nominee consideration, which inevitably end up as the reason they are leaked onto the net. I suppose then we should be thankful for their greed in this case.

Til January 15th however, sales of the Peter Jackson "tween" film can only be speculated upon, and I do still believe if the movie is worth it's weight, it will be successful. Only time will tell.

Infectious avatarI believe it does'nt as well.If I watch a film, wether it's a screener or bootleg or whatever,if it's good I usually go out and buy a copy.I have a HUGE family and if we went to the movies it would cost us a small fortune and times are rougher for us working class than Peter Jackson or Micheal Bay or James Cameron, ect, ect, ect.
Good read as usual :)

Dirk_Diggler avatarThe fact that he says "anyone who is caught illegally downloading the film will also be prosecuted to the fullest" is just silly..He He speaks as If he is the Law. I would like to see him make good on this promise, It would blow this whole thing wide open. If he gets "specal treatment" for his films by the government then im sure other directors will be outraged, and it will no doubt expose even further the fact that the government is in bed with the movie industry. Thank you for your greed slimebag! Ill enjoy this movie free of charge!

SouLesS avatarMovie leaks are just free PR :) look at dark knight and transformers 2..both leaked out and both blew out the box office with $$..I dont buy one stinking bit about torrents costing anyone money...if someone was gunna go see it they odds are still will...providing the movie isnt a pile of steaming crap..I have on several occasions made my box office donation after seeing a movie on the computer. Hollywood needs to understand when they are not churning out bullshyt they actually make money :) its like they want everyone to be happy and pleased and oh so thankful for putting out movies that couldnt even entertain a theater full of spaztic retards. So hollywood if your paying attention, keep the GOOD movies coming and you will see no shortage of dollars.

No avatargreat read...people have been sharing music, movies, andother forms of entertainment long before the arrival of the internet,of which i may point out was intended for the purpose of globally sharing information...and yes it is true movies have went on to be major block busters at the theaters even after being shared, point in fact is james camrons new movie avatar which just set major records at the box office, even after having been shared..so if ones creative endevor in the world of film making is worthwhile at all people will still flock to the big screen to see it.... so don't worry peter jackson,i think u will be ok..

2canchu avatarWay to go OBS. Also I have to agree w/souless, leaks are PR.Just as all the recent "sex tape leaks". It sure helps their career. When your name gets mentioned and passed around it sticks, thats the American mentality. We've had it jammed down our throat for so long. And hey moontan, I love that picture. Reminds me of Jamaica. Anyone seen Peter Jacksons first movie? I'd say he's come a long way.

Farquardt avatarJust like the early days of computers, we "borrowed" software from each other to give it a try. If it was good and did what we wanted, we'd spend the money on buying a copy. There are sooo many movies releasing, I can not afford to go to a cinema to see them. My GF and I watched "Bones" and, when she quit crying, demanded I taker to see it at the theater when it arrives here. See Peter? You didn't lose our money. We just got to see it on OUR schedule instead of yours. I maintain there is very little money lost to Hollywood producers due to P2P sharing. Most of these people are NEVER gonna go to the cinema to see your film, anyway. Those that might have probably WILL now.

DirtyDugan avatarI'm curious to know if Peter Jackson has seen the figures for 2009. Sales of movie tickets are up 10% from the previous year. Interesting isn't it? But don't forget everyone, we're bad for using P2P and are taking food off the movie industries table. I'm also curious to know if people would be more interested in seeing this movie or reading the book. Or, if the author will make more in sales of this book after we the people see the film before or after the release date. For those interested in this book turned to film, it was written by Alice Sebold and am sure the book is better than the film as in most cases though I have yet to watch the film.

KING2ALL avatarWhat ever happened to VHS,cassette tapes, BATA, 8Track, and records. Oh yea, people like Peter sold us stuff that had a crappy shelf life so we would have to repurchase it multiple times to enjoy the same thing we bought the first time. By the way, most stores don't sell the players for these formats anymore and if they do the price is often inflated. So pardon me for laughing while people like Peter with all his money isn't smart enough to insure the product he wishes to sell is not given away for free. Long Live ET.....

The great ones still look and sound the best on the big screen....So hollywood still gets my share regardless.....They're not losing anything...If anything I believe they may actually gain some that had they not seen a p2p version first, would've most likely waited til they could get it on netflix with their $10 a month package....Thanks for the read though OBS.....

moominos avatardo we feel bad about "ripping off" the film industry? no,not really, the eternal question is this, without sites like these a lot of these films would not be heard of.i am sick to death of going to see a film at the cost of £8 a ticket only to be dissappointed with hollywoods "rushing out" and shoddy production, this way i can vet a film and if i enjoy it i will either go see it or buy the dvd.as for independant films, the smaller budgets, the overheads etc....word of mouth goes a long way,and they usually entice an audience that would not normally go and see that movie, but based on my recommendation they now would.i understand jacksons annoyance and am a fan of his work,i loved this film and will buy it when it comes out on dvd.as long as they're paying "stars" 15 mil a movie,i will continue to vet them, try b4 u buy,but where possible put back into the system, thanks to all the guys at et,i've seen some amazing films because of u and have subsequently bought them on original copies, you all rock xxx

moominos avataralso in addition ,i feel that the film industry doesnt fully understand the p2p file sharing system and its positive effect. They will give us contrived facts and figures relating to how much p2p "loses" the film companies, but in actual fact, there are no films that lose money.Even waterworld, the most renowned flop of all time, upon dvd and vhs sales, MADE money, no such thing as bad publicity......right,thats my rant over....any1 agree or disagree, i'd be interested to know, peace

No avatarI must say, when I read all the mixed reviews about this movie, I was skeptical. I am an avid reader as well, and had never heard the novel either. So I downloaded it, to see what it was all about, and man, I was really, REALLY impressed with it. I mean, the story, from start to finish, was full of emotion, and depth. I loved this movie, and I'm typically not so much into these kinds of films. Everyone should avoid allowing others to tell them negative thoughts about this, I implore each of you to download it, and see it yourselves. It truly is an epic tale, a great, great movie.

RedZed avatarGood article Obs and your last comment "Til January 15th however, sales of the Peter Jackson "tween" film can only be speculated upon, and I do still believe if the movie is worth it's weight, it will be successful. Only time will tell." appears to be very apt especially with the info that it has already pulled a billion in 17 days. Places like ET are, in a real sense, the true testing grounds for a movie. If it's successful, audiences will DL and watch the torrent but decide whether or not to see the movie in the cinema. I, like many have watched Avatar (with thanks to ET and the UL's) but since then, have seen it at the movies 3 times (in 3D) - a decision made simply because of the 'preview' I had been fortunate enough to see - It cost me nearly $50 but I probably wouldn't have gone to see it if it had not been a good movie - so who exactly is the winner in the end????

MarcusVenture avatarThe PROBLEM is with Peter Jacksons people or at least the Hollywood people who he gave the film to so they could evaluate it. Thats who Mr. Jackson should be mad or sad about.

Of course the movie will still makes money...IF ITS GOOD!! Could this be why Mr. Jackson is angry? Many people who have seen it say they are disappointed in Peter Jackson and this could be his worst film in many years. Could Peter be trying to blame bad ticket sales to come on other people than himself? I think that hits the nail on the head.

The last installment of LORD OF THE RINGS was released on the internet way before opening day, much in the SAME way this movie has been released, and it went on to make tons of green $$$!!!!! I can Bullfrogs on this one! Peter Jackson is full of himself and BULLFROGS too!

No avatarThere is nothing like seeing your favorite actors on big screen. Very seldom I go to a movie because of the director. I saw Ninja Assassin in ET and paid to see it at the movies twice and I will be buying the dvd. Real fans and movie buffs don't mind paying to see it at the movies, it just we are a I want what I want right now society. So if someone got what we want right now are curiosity gets the best of us, besides if they stop teasing you to death with all them comercials six months before the freaking movie come out and for some of us it don't even get released in our area. They cater to the larger populations, so if it wasn't for torrents we have to wait longer for the DVD to come out. They need to consider all that when they playing to the masses. I'ma writer and we have been missing out on royalties for years, such as used bookstores, library, rentals. borrowing from friends, oh yeah, the people who read the books and return for refund...lol Now its worse with books in ebook form. But I have started doing most of my books as a free read first online, then put it up for sale. If its good people buy it anyway, and word of mouth has esculated sales where I might not have gotten any.
