After a number or unsuccessful attempts to implement the “three-strikes” system in New Zealand, the law has finally passed there. So, a full-pledged system has already been introduced and is expected to work efficiently. Meanwhile, the legislation has already made its first potential victims.

The Recording Industry Association of New Zealand announced that it has filed forty-two violation warnings that have to be passed on to the Internet service providers working with the suspected copyright infringers. In order to comply with the new legislation, online providers will have to send out notification letters to the alleged unauthorized file-sharing users. If the notified users choose to go on with their illegal activities even after they receive a third warning, they run a risk of facing the Copyright Tribunal of New Zealand, along with a fine of up to $15,000, which may be granted if the defendant is found liable for infringement.

The so-called “graduated response” system has been stimulating the interest of many countries, some of them considering the possibility to implement it as their copyright legislation. Among the examples there are South Korea, the United Kingdom and France. The first country claims to have the most developed undergoing system, which was confirmed by the local music industry that saw a change for the better thanks to stricter piracy rules. As for the United Kingdom, the “three-strikes” legislation has been continuously delayed there, because Internet service providers and Internet user rights groups preferred to boycott the legislation. The situation is different in France, which is already sending out thousands of notifications. Still, the country hasn’t yet decided which sanctions to apply after the third strike.

D4T4 avatar@125mph, being new to the ET family I would suggest you look into getting a decent VPN which is based outside of your country but first of all check out some of the excellent past articles on this site. Follow their advice and you won't go far wrong.

D4T4 avatarI think #2 & #3 are missing the point hrg is making. hrg never said that he wants people fined or that ET and similar sites should be shut down. The point he is making is that this will make people step up their security. Only the noobs will be caught and so long as they catch someone, anyone, they can justify their ludicrous fees and fines.

dikhed avatarso far only notices have been sent out for 1 record label, whoever has rhianna, lady gaga and taio cruz on there books. The copyright holder has to pay 25nzd to issue one of these notices. No one has been sent a notice for downloading movies or tv programmes yet. Im still downloading hard and will do so till they cut my wires. Then ill be on the free wifi around wellingtons waterfront going HARDER.
TRY AND STOP US! gota have a better system for that.

mini_super_nova avatarWhere are the people who have little or no money to begin with and can't afford to buy expensive movies or music, supposed to come up with $15K? You are dreaming....LOL, I wouldn't pay that even if it meant going to jail, at least you get free rent, free meals, free gym, tv and education all on tax payers money! What logic all this is... 3 strikes, give me a break, those poor actors and artists out there, cashing in food-stamps and standing in line at the salvation army's outlet, I really feel so sorry for them...we should all pinch in an open a charity for starving hollywood actors & musicians, anyone?.. I didn't think so...

BLOWerMEat avatarI for one am confused, all I have done is stuck an antennae in the air and found free signals . Is there a law that says I should pay for that? To me the internet is a free serVice and along with the free serVice comes eVery thing the internet has to offer. I am not MASS producing moives and games or programs for a profit. My friends have just agreed to share with me . Where is the criminal act that justifies fines and penalties such as incarceration?
