All over the world, with the new era of war-torn battlefields and epic military deployment, there are sailors, soldiers, airmen, and many types of armed forces, whom are defending their nation or commending their duties to their country, by being deployed into various regions. Whether those regions be on land in a foreign country, or at sea on a naval vessel, these men and women deserve the respect of the world for putting their lives in danger, and taking time away from their families in order to fulfill the duties placed upon them.

Deployed Armed Forces

What many do not realize, is these men and women are rarely able to entertain themselves with enjoyable content. The fact of the matter is, in most of the nations they are serving in, they are only able to access the foreign speaking films, television shows, or similar.

Think of the men and women whom are in the Navy. Whether they are on a submarine, aircraft carrier, or similar, they are stuck in the oceans of the world, or out at sea, with no way to receive television stations or buy films. They are only able to see what they can on their computers, and with very few if any Hollywood production companies allowing the streaming of films to personal computers, they are far less likely to be able to "legally" view the media such as movies, or television shows, in which they deserve to be able to watch while defending the very nations that are creating the entertainment.

These individuals deserve much more respect and appreciation than they are given. In fact, the Hollywood producers should even be paying out of pocket to send the United States military men and women copies of every film they produce, every television show they release, or any viewable media. After all, they are putting their lives on the line just for the freedoms of these companies aren't they? Sadly though, this type of "returning the favor" is never given back to them.

There are civilian funded programs however which round up DvDs and BluRays and other content to send to the troops. The civilian effort is somewhat of a help, but it cannot possibly reach every member of the armed forces. Fortunately, they do have internet access (most of them), and they do use file sharing in order to access the content which keeps their spirits up when they need it the most. This type of downloading of "copyrighted" content however is not exactly "legal", but by all means, they deserve it if anyone does.

One of our members here on Extra Torrent, Movies4DeployedSailors, is doing his part to help the men and women of the United States Navy whom are deployed all over the world's oceans, to provide the armed forces with content from Extra Torrent. I felt compelled to be intrigued by this type of gratitude and great service he is doing for these troops, and I felt it would make a great story for ET articles.

Many do not consider how hard it is emotionally, physically, and spiritually, for these men and women to be stuck in the waters, with little to no entertainment. The benefits however, in which the peer to peer file sharing world, specifically the BitTorrent Protocol offers these men and women, is something that nothing else can compare to. Using torrents, they are able to view whatever they like, to help take their mind off their stressful careers.

I sat down with Movies4DeployedSailors, to ask a few questions about his ventures for a great cause, in educating the sailors about the BitTorrent Protocol and how they are able to find whatever their hearts may desire on torrent sites such as Extra Torrent. The following is my one on one interview with Movies4DeployedSailors.

OBSCENE:
In your experience in the military, how would you say that file sharing and BitTorrent specifically has been a huge help to soldiers/sailors which otherwise would have no access to television series, movies, music, games, and applications?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
Huge help is to say the least. Being away and deployed is something that many people do not fully understand or appreciate. We detach from the world, pretty much, and find ourselves out in harms way with only the company of fellow military personnel. Being able to share movies, music, games, and applications greatly raises moral for us, as we are able to enjoy TV as we would in the states.

OBSCENE:
Do you believe that during your time at sea, or for others serving in different nations, that file sharing has made their time away a little bit easier?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
I cannot speak for every one, but I can personally say that it has. I can serve my country and complete my duties while I am away, then relax and enjoy a movie. I can listen to the latest music out here while at work. Where I am currently stationed we have a small entertainment selection at high prices, and often miss out on the new things. Being able to converse with family members about the latest movies keeps me connected to them.

OBSCENE:
How do you feel about the scrutiny which file sharing receives here in the USA and abroad around the world? Do you think it's fair, that with BitTorrent being the only way that certain people can even view their favorite content, that it's made out to be demonized in the media?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
This has always being a difficult question for me. I had previously thought that downloading movies was very wrong. Actors take time to create movies and support their families, and then we get them for free. At the same time, our military families give so much for others and sometimes we have no other means to come by some of this media. It should not be demonized in the media as it recently has. Consideration should be given to those who download media not with the intention of not paying for things, but with the intentions of sharing with others who cannot reach a place to purchase it.

OBSCENE:
Your name is Movies4DeployedSailors, what is it that you do exactly for the deployed men and women of the United States?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
I cannot share information on things related to what I do work wise, but as far as media goes I look for the latest things to get for them. I look for movies that are currently playing in the states and the newest music. They ask me for titles they would like to watch and I get them. I do not charge them for the time I put into getting the media for them as they are already sacrificing enough, but I do remind them that someone put a lot of time into sharing the movie.

OBSCENE:
Do you think they really appreciate all the extra movies and music and more which file sharing allows them to view?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
They do appreciate it. I explained the hard work which uploaders here are putting into bringing us the latest movies and music. I enjoy conversing about the movies and watching the smiles on the faces when they enjoy a good movie. It takes their minds away from all the stress of being deployed.

OBSCENE:
Do your commanding officers allow you to enjoy the "pirated" movies, because there is no other alternative?

Movies4DeployedSailors:

OBSCENE:
Do you think, that if the Hollywood production companies allowed us to legally buy digital downloads, or live stream the movies for a fee, that deployed soldiers would pay the price for it instead of using BitTorrent?

Movies4DeployedSailors:
I honestly doubt that, but there will be some who will pay for it, as I would. We are already sacrificing our lives so that they are able to make movies and enjoy freedom. Why sacrifice twice? We do not make as much money as it is now for a job that barely anyone would like to do. Hollywood companies should think about helping deployed personnel in getting their media. I would pay in order to support the actor's family, and to bring the media to my personnel.

OBSCENE:
I personally would like to thank you for your service to the United States, and the service of all men and women in the military who not only take time away from their families to defend freedom, but put their own lives at risk in order for the people back home to have a better life. I would also like to thank you for taking time out of your life to sit down with the community here on Extra Torrent, and explain to them about why you are doing what you're doing for the armed forces.

Movies4DeployedSailors:
I would like to thank all the uploaders and admins of ET! This site has truly helped me while I am away from my family and it has helped many others that are out here with me. On behalf of all of us out here: Job Well Done!

That concludes my one on one with Movies4DeployedSailors:, not only a brave soul for sticking in the military and risking his life, and taking time away from his family, but a courageous and unique individual for showing the military how they can access films, music, movies, and more, which they otherwise would be completely unable to get their hands on.

Up until now, not many would speak of how the armed forces were using BitTorrent to their advantage, and I hope that everyone sees that this is but just one more huge benefit that file sharing offers to the world. Remember, sharing is caring.

No avatarI am alos a retired member of the United States Navy, and I have many friends stretched across the oceans and seas that benefit from what I am able to provide them. I was stationed aboard many aircraft carriers and a few of the smaller destroyers. The only place I could go see the movies and even then they were 6 weeks off from the U.S. release, were on base. If I understood the foreign language of the area I was stationed in, I could catch the movie out in town. Some of the movie theaters in Hong Kong played the movies with english subtitles, but really it is not the same thing.

Thank you Movies4DeplyedSailors, I salute you and what you are doing for my brothers and sisters stationed around the world.

SnakeyB avatarEMUworld you said it!! This is by far the best and most intense article I have read here on ET, not only for the questions and answers but for the thoughts and feelings it brought up in me about the men and women serving from many countries including my own. Thank you so much Obs and Movies4DeployedSailors for bringing this whole situation to our attention. Hollywood get of your asses and do something so people like this don't have to hide there names.
Thank you so much Movies4DeployedSailors you are helping to bridge the gap with the future reintegration to civilian life, while giving the serving men and women the tools to enjoy a little peace of mind, enjoyment, and entertainment to the people that need it most.

razor1shrp avatari have to agree with all of the above these MEN are the pinnacle of our society without them we would be in fear for our family's and friends safety. I have friends that came back from the Gulf and emotionally they are not the same guys and they take all the illness and emotional stress with a grain of salt. I think this war is a waste of time we are no further ahead today then 8 yrs ago so what's the point ??. Canada supports our troops along with all the other countries trying to bring us peace thanks boys for a job well done !!!!!.

Brynn217 avatarumm.... EVEN IF Hollywood allowed the streaming for guys to watch movies, the bandwidth and times alotted for simple VOIP calls is limited at best when overseas in the military, let alone enough time to stream an entire movie...

Now, this is also something that I have checked into in the past. My first expirence with Movie Piracy actually comes from this subject. There is a USO/Miltary program from Hollywood that sponsers new releases headed over to our troops... My DAD, way back in 1982 had a Beta copy of the movie "ET" that came from one of these shipments overseas. I myself was in the USAF in the early 90's and saw flixs that came from back in the States... As one person said, sometimes they where 6 weeks old already, but every so often.. Yes, Hollywood does sometimes help take care of the troops.... (expecially when the film was made with the help of the military, Top Gun, Behind Enemy Lines, Red October)... They even get the actors involved with the showings at special events...

So as much as I like to blast Hollywood, from time to time, they do come thru... Could they do more, hell yes... But of course they are so afraid of "One of US" to send Pre-Retail DVD's to our armed Forces the same day the movie is released in the States..., that they resist the urge.. (Hell one of those guys could rip it and put on the internet in Iraq, OMG!)

But they could do impromptu theaters now.... Free for whoever was stattioned there....

No avatarI'll use United States military here for my example. I agree, they do some charity work for troops (all of which is a tax write off for them) however, the coverage you may see of a USO tour, or a charitable donation toward the troop's entertainment, you're talking about maybe, MAYBE 3-500 troops at a time. Out of the nearly 300 thousand which are stationed outside the United States alone, lol. That's not nearly enough to keep them ALL entertained. Also, even IF they say, sent a Pre-Retail DvD of let's say, Avatar, to ALL 300,000 US troops stationed abroad, that's only ONE movie, slightly over 2 hours of entertainment, for each of the troops. 2 Hours then poof, they're back to war time tactics. So honestly even the slight charitable foundations/benefits which they offer, do very little for the overall morale and end-result of the troops entertainment. What I was suggesting is that, more so than less, there is not enough being done to properly keep these troops minds away from the ultimate sacrifices which they are making. Not to mention that even if they did offer streaming videos to the troops, that they wouldn't actually be able to afford it on their salaries. US Police Officer's salary, around $25k a year, A Pilot for a major Airline, around $20k a year, an investment banker, whom basically is a puppet for the banking industry to swindle as much as they can, around $100k a year, oh, and a marine fighting on the ground in Afghanistan dodging RPG's in order to fight for their nation (regardless of how you feel about the war they still have a job to do which puts their lives at risk), they make also around $22k a year. WTF is wrong with that picture? Anyways, the point was, that they probably couldn't afford it anyways. Seeing as how they must purchase their own Side-Arm weaponry, their own body armor, and any "officer" in the Military must purchase his/her own uniforms. So Hmmph to that.

Another thing, is actually, I've been on a U.S. Aircraft carrier, on many occasions. This is not the 90's, they have satellite uplinks and connection speed that is classified military technology. I've sat and watched gbit lines draw in data faster than you can click your heels together. So bandwidth, is NOT a problem aboard these new age vessels. Trust me on this :)

No avatarI don't think i have ever read an article of any kind, bittorrent related or not, that made me stop and say WOW! at the end of it in addition to making me think of the bittorrent world and the type of service/escape it can provide in such a different way.

What an amazing article. I live in Vancouver, Canada and for the first time in my life i am about to utter the following words: "From the bottom of my heart and soul, thank you so deeply to each and every single soul, American, Canadian or otherwise who are out there fighting for us,our country's honor, freedom, peace, safety and everything in between. You are the very blood that keeps our hearts strong, proud and safe".

It is ironic that as much as we enjoy movies that people who pretend to be something they're not to provide entertainment for the world get paid insane amounts of money and the people who are sometimes portrayed (troops) put their very lives on the line in the very literal sense get only a fraction (if that) of what actors make.

We tend to forget about the people who do the dirty work. The ones who will clean up the mess we are disgusted by. The ones who will walk into the darkeness to bring us light. The ones who will fight evil to bring about some good. The ones who who suffer so others won't have to. The ones who rise when others can't.

All the thanks in the world will never be enough to truly make up for what the men and women of our world sacrifice so we can all enjoy the freedom we have today.

Movies4DeployedSailors and all the men and women of our troops, thank you! For everything! I truly hope that the escape you find from the bittorrent files you find on ET truly does make a difference in your day and always know that everyone here at ET have you in their thoughts and prayers.

dubbsizzle avatarI was deployed in South Korea back in the 90's so I know how great of a service this is to our deployed armed forces everywhere. I am surprised the government has not put up the money to supply our troops with movie entertainment abroad to improve moral and other important reasons. Thanks Movies4DeployedSailors for doing this for our troops and thanks to all those at ET that bring the torrents here.

1st_Cavalry_Delta avatarBeing an ex-Soldier (US ARMY); I can recall each and every specific movie title I was able to watch while on each deployment. Because, it was considered a Luxury and only "worth-while" and viewable during your Down-time. And if your not in the right frame of mind after a hetic day; A movie (new/old)is basically meaningless. But, when those days a soldier can "kick-back" and is able to watch a Newly released Movie..."brother" that can be a tremendous and rejuvenating (mental/physical) experience, just being able to remove yourself (mentaly) from the hysteria and real-world situation, if for just an hour or two. Should be worth it. As far as Movies4DeployedSailors...ehhh ?? Most squids usually have so much down-time they need the continuious update of movies due to sheer boredom. I should know...I'm a Military Contractor for the US Navy. Plus, most squids can easily download or know of someone onboard the ship who has a connection via laptop. Duplicate and Triplicate ripped copies are floating all throughout the ship. Grunts & Jarheads, there is a difference between a Veteran and a Combat Veteran...and those movies could be an invaluable tool to relieve the mental/physical stresses for land-based combat forces vs. the boredom of a sailor being stuck in the middle of an ocean.

All... gave Some
Some gave ...ALL

No avatar1st_Cavalry_Delta, thank you for the comment. I can see your point of view on the 'squid out to see being bored' and just downloading movies to pass time. I myself was stationed aboard a ship. Depending on your line of work; a person would have more or less down time. I am not aboard a ship now, and am actually out in a combat zone. We do not get as much 'downtime' as say someone out to sea. Well, while I was out to sea I barely got any downtime. We have marines and soldiers who we share with. Either way, WE all deserve the same. Being stuck out to sea is just as stressing as being in a combat zone to me. It depends on the person and how they handle stress. Media seems to relieve some stress for all, if just a bit. Thanks again and thank you for your service!
