The recent research has revealed that unauthorized video game downloads have increased 20% in the last 5 years. Internet piracy of video games is still growing, even with nations all over the globe, especially the United Kingdom, France and the United States, mounting an attack on Internet piracy in 2011.
British Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has already asked Internet-based companies, including credit card companies and advertisers, to sever all ties with online services engaged into unauthorized downloading of copyrighted content. Hunt has also denied the accusations saying that blocking access to illegal content represented an attack on net neutrality. He claimed that illegal distribution of copyrighted content equals to theft, as well as to a direct assault on the freedoms and rights of content creators to be fairly remunerated for their efforts.
The country’s Culture Secretary said that they can’t allow some goods to be sold in the shops on the High Street, or allow them to be established for selling only counterfeited goods. So, the government should do its best to make it more difficult to access websites dedicated to the copyright violation. That’s the idea the gaming industry agrees with.
During the interview, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment chairman announced that around 250 people have been sitting in a studio for years building the latest Modern Warfare 3, and everyone can understand what money it cost and how much the industry loses because of pirates.
Another problem for the gaming industry is that Internet users tend to download video games from unauthorized websites. Many gamers admit that the illicit downloads usually provide them a window to the quality of the games before they can get a chance to purchase those.
According to the report, five of the top games of last year have already been illegally downloaded a million times. Meanwhile, in defence of Internet piracy, gamers explain that they actually pay for games thanks to free pirated trials – if they don’t get to try them, they never would have even bothered to buy them. None of them have ever been fined for the last ten years. They point out that they can only buy games they like and delete ones they don’t. Meanwhile, according to some other media reports, the growth rate of the movie piracy is even more than games – around 30% for the last 5 years.

movies and games have gone up in price 20-30% in the last 5 years too... gamecube, xbox, and ps2 games were fifty now all games are 60-70$.... They aint loosing shit....
Plus I only Pirate games I've had before or games that are no longer sold new in stores.
If they are loosing so much money to piracy how could VIACOM pay their CEO a performance based $50 million dollars Bonus/Salary last year, up 150% from last??? Their books are cooked & they are crooks! I am not a gamer but my kids are. Just like the movies released, most are trash not worth watching/playing. Many times in the middle of watching (read pre-viewing) a pirated movie we have discovered that the movie was too good to watch at home. So, we shut the movie off and all went to the Big Screen to better enjoy the experience. Movie tickets & games cost far too much for us to waste money on unless we know we will enjoy the experience. If I knew that what I was paying for was quality entertainment it wouldn't be too bad. BUT most releases are trash and not worth a penny of mine. If they want to be compedative mabey they should stop producing junk. Free enterprise still works and quality products still sell themselves.
Agree with #2 Games are way to much $$ nowadays so you cant blame people for pirating. Also considering that a majority of games can be beaten in about 6 to 8 hours and rely on online gameplay for replay value, you definitely do not get your moneys worth. Whats blows my mind is that oldschool games on the nes/genesis etc took weeks or longer to complete, today you can buy a game and complete in the same day (considering its not an rpg). Bottom line if you are gonna give people less for their buck, your gonna have more piracy in my opinion.
i only download games that u cant get on the ps3 and games r far to expensive you pay £40 for a game an ya not guaranteed a good game or a hard game these days u can buy £40 games an complete them the same day thats y i only rent ps3 games from blockbuster and movies i download because these days there all remakes an garbage an mostly 3d but most of all i wouldnt pay £40 for a game or £16 for a dvd when the money u pay doesnt even go to the actors it goes to the company an if piracy is stealing then y isnt listening to albums online without buying them not stealing (we7)if u dont like the album oviously ya wont buy it an then theyve lost £16 so there talking out there ars
5 years ago, XBOX1 was in full-bloom. Games prices were $22-$40/USD not $55-$90/USD. there price ranges went insane and became unaffordable for some and financially poor decisions for others.
there full of shit anyway like i bought uncharted 3 for £43 it sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide on its first day so yh there really losing money ill leave them a tip STOP CHARGING £43 FOR GAMES WHEN THEY ONLY TAKE HOURS TO COMPLETE AND YOUR NOT GUARANTEED A LONG AND GOOD GAME ORELSE ILL STOP PLAYING GAMES COZ THEY ARENT WORTH DIEING OVER

What gets me is how greedy these people are, Avatar has grossed over a Billion Dollars, and climbing, moves a making more than ever, the good ones, Modern Warfare 3 sales in near a BILLION (775 Million) and climbing and they are complaining. I don't know any other game that has made so much money in that time frame, and still not happy. Remember the old days when you brought a game and it was crap, ( and most were) you couldn't take it back because it was opened. Well those days are over, and they don't like it. That is called karma.
movies prices have fallen but games prices has risen. it was bound to get pirated if the prices go up
@Demonlord: "movies prices have fallen": maybe where youre from, not here. most places ive traveled to, have increased steadly 12% per year, last year jumping 43%
I remember buying a game and read the things on the box and thought wow great game. Paid big money loaded it and WTF a piece of crap. Crap just spent 60.00
Another aspect to why games are downloaded is all the DRM crap the companies put into the disk and software.
I remember buying and I could not even play the damn thing because I had to have an active internet connection so it could phone home and confirm I had a legitimate game then give its okay to play.. ALL the rootkits being installed like the one in Sony games; hell they even tried it with music cdroms...
I believe price is the first reason and the Copyright protection crap is the main reason for the downloads; they have been cracked to remove that stupidity.
