Live performances & Soccer Matches Will Be Available In Drawing Rooms From This Year
Las Vegas: A breathtaking wave of 3D televisions has hit the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where the technology is being touted as the next big thing in home theater.
“When it comes to home entertainment, there really is no experience like 3D,” Sony chief executive Howard Stringer said while unveiling the innovations on Wednesday on the eve of the official start of CES in Las Vegas. “We intend to take the lead in 3D. We want to provide the most compelling 3D content possible.”
The Japanese electronics giant’s plans range from being part of a 3D television network in the Unites States to streaming live performances in the format.
Country music star Taylor Swift
performed during the press conference in a Sony demonstration of live 3D broadcasting and said she will document her coming Asia tour in the format. Sony has teamed with Discovery and IMAX in a 3D TV network and with ESPN to broadcast soccer matches and golf in 3D.
While the depth-perception technology has been around for years, it is finally “ready for prime time” as proven by box office successes of recent films “Avatar” and “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” according to IMAX.
Sony will release a line of 3D-ready television
this year capable of synching with sensing units and “active shutter glasses”, worn by viewers to create the illusion of a three-dimensional image. On the CES show floor, massive TV screen linked to wireless versions of the glasses for a 3D effect were displayed by South Korea’s LG Electronics.
“3D is going to be the next big buzz,” LG’s Randy Overton said. “Everyone is going to want it. Then, the gaming systems will jump on.”
Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey
said that while 3D offering are visually stunning, it is unlikely consumers will rush to buy the premium-priced television sets. Many consumers upgraded to high-definition sets in the past three years, and an infrastructure to deliver 3D content to homes isn’t in place, according to McQuivey.
Growth of 3D has been slow because of a lack of programming, the need for the special glasses and the higher prices of 3D sets, but least month’s release of science fiction blockbuster “AVATAR”, a 3D film, has renewed interest in the medium.

its took 15 yrs for hd to become a reality for the average consumer, how long before this new 3d tech gets going in homes, my view is this is just another gimmick to sell 2000 dollar tv sets, keep it in the cinema where it belongs
There are failry cheap units [ $150 - 350 ] that can be purchased on EBAY that can do what they are talking about in this story. I have been debating buying one for about a year. This technology has been out in Japan for many years and it DOES WORK VERY WELL!!!!
Here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=250537393402&Category=3281&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2 is one unit that costs a little more but contains the screens in the lenes themselves and looks like an 80 INCH SCREEN!!!! Thats NICE!!!
There are cheaper units that use the liquid crystal glasses along with your regular TV set and these should work well with the right software but I do not know how well these works but I have read they do work.
Look around ebay, there are some nice gadgets if you search long enough to find em!
Argh, something else that I need to upgrade. Two years without having to spend money on the next coolest toy. Thats all I ask. God why have you forsaken me!
I'm one of those people that just upgraded to HD this year and Taylor Swift never danced or sang for me. I will be all over this technology when it is within reach for me. Can you imagine what gaming systems will be like? Crazy, In now time Call of Duty will be shooting live rounds at people.

F*CK watching TV on that .......whos up for call of duty in 3d ohhhyeah
Yeah! Video games in 3D will be wild! Imagine a first person shooter and having the bullets flying right at you! Or maybe some villian in front of you trying to stab you with a knife or spear! That will be great. How about boxing? I played 3D Tennis on the Nintendo VirtualBoy and it was cool as HECK!!!! I still have that thing but I only have two games: Tenis and one thats called Wario or something like that. Its been too long since I had that thing unpacked. Huh, I think I might dig that red behemoth out tomorrow.
i wanna play cod on that.
Everyone is hung up on the size of the TV in the picture and that is NOT what the story is about. That TV set has been out for over a year and its not a 3D HD TV. Its just a regular big butt Super HD TV! It offers FOUR TIMES THE RESOLUTION OF 1080P!!!!! Dude!!! Thats awesome but because it is so large it has to be that good or the picture would look terrible, pixelated or blurry.
No word on the price though. I bet its outrageous!!! When LG came out with the 103 inch model it was $70,000!!!! I bet the 150 inch plasma is well over $100,000!
IMO, these TV's are for SUCKERS. First, who could get this in their house? A person would have to take down a wall to get it in the house or build the house around the TV...STUPID!!! I say look into the new HD PROJECTORS which can throw up an INCREDIBLE 300 inch Hi Def picture, double the size of that monster, at have a starting price of $450 -$500!!! I have a very cheap model I bought off Ebay for $100 and it is showing an 80 inch picture but its NOT HD by any means. I will have one some day though!!!
To everyone slobbering over that TV look into projectors at BestBuy or check out Ebay for super cheap deals because many people are upgrading their projectors to HD models and selling off their older projectors for chump change. Even the older models look really nice. I use mine to watch older films on and then when I want to watch Hi Def downloads I watch them on my 32 inch Vizio. Shop around guys...Even us poor fold can have HUGE theaters at home!

120Hz is the key here.
If you have a LCD/Plasma that has 120HZ refresh rate or higher there is no need to buy a new TV.
All you have to do is google 3D TV and all the info is there.
Sony,LG,Panasonic,Hyundai are all working on this 3D TV, and their technology is slightly different to each other.
The Question is who will win the 3D TV wars?
All this has happened before and will happen again!
VHS vs BETA.... HD vs Blu Ray.
Which version of 3D TV will win
