Wikipedia Founder Will Fight SOPA

Jimmy Wales, a Wikipedia founder, has joined activist groups on the Internet in order to quash the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). He is currently threatening to kill the English language version of his encyclopedia in retaliation. Jimmy Wales announced through the service Wikipedia that it is really a huge deal to do something like that, and this would be unprecedented for English Wikipedia.

However, it won't be the first time the encyclopedia protests against the government. Jimmy Wales himself has proudly declared that the same situation in Italy resulted in blanking the Italian language version, announcing that the Italian Parliament backed down immediately. Even considering this, the SOPA legislation is even more contentious. A lot of online companies and organizations are now up in arms at measures pushing for harsh and absurd legislation on appeasing the entertainment industry. Meanwhile, its biggest critics claim that it will stifle the free nature of the web itself.

At the moment, a strike hasn't been declared, but Wikipedia founder referred to the threat in question as a “straw poll” instead of an outright promise. It seems that he is trying to arm himself with a groundswell of public opinion before a meeting at the Whitehouse. However, it’s unclear if Jimmy Wales would prevent access just within the United States or if the entire website will take the plunge. He only mentioned that a global strike of at least the English version of the encyclopedia would put the maximum pressure on the country’s government.

Thus far, there have been a lot of calls from people opposing the suggested legislation to help urge the government to vote against it. For example, activist group called Demand Progress has called for online companies to join to fight the bill, with 70 organizations having signed up so far. The group also backed a bid by Senator Wyden to read out the names of all people against the legislation in Congress in order to emphasize the widespread anger at the suggested law. It has called on netizens to contact the government by visiting America Censorship. David Segal, Director at the activist group, stressed the effect online encyclopedia would have in opposing the legislation as strongly as Jimmy Wales wants it to. He is still concerned that Wikipedia would face an existential threat if the proposed bill becomes law – in other words, they would have a tremendous impact if they were to go black now.

No avatarIf SOPA goes ahead, it will crucify the Internet both within and outside of the USA. Risks of IP takedowns will mean all non-American DNS servers will firewall the USA to maintain DNS server integrity. The Internet would shut down for 3 -4 days while ALL American IP addresses are removed from Non-USA DNS servers. All non-USA traffic would be diverted from the USA, making the Internet worldwide cripplingly slow as USA server capacity is lost and major trunk routes crossing the USA circumvented. The cost of replacing all of this DNS server capacity and of developing new trunk routes would be charged against what (very limited!) traffic to/from the USA is 'allowed'. The USA will have no control over whether the rest of the world even allows the USA to access or be accessed from the WWW. The additional charges on US users might amount to a 15 or 20 fold increase in American ISP costs, which will be passed directly onto USA broadband users. The thousands of USA companies that have laboriously built up Internet supply chains might be decimated with no or very little internet access. There will be tens of thousands of take-down requests even upon big companies and no guarantee whatsoever that even big companies could get an early defense hearing. All free USA sites will vanish overnight, as will the USA Internet Cloud. Competition will cease to exist on the Internet as all competing companies will issue takedown requests against their competitors. All smaller companies will not dare host a website for fear of takedown litigation. Defense legal costs against take-down will be hugely and massively expensive. SOPA will destroy the Internet as we know it, and even if big companies get back online after takedowns within 24 hours (or up to 64 hours offline over a weekend) lost business for them will run into millions of dollars! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Some very major trunk internet routes pass through the USA and routing elsewhere would not be an effective alternative, meaning the internet would slow down to the extent of hardly being able to watch a small streamed video if SOPA goes ahead, as traffic via Europe would take 3 - 4 times longer and there just ISN'T the capacity to cope via Europe with the extra traffic. If SOPA goes ahead all of these major trunk routes across the USA (regardless of who owns them) will be cut and not used by ALL Non-USA routers. The problem is that all of these USA trunk internet routes pass through several or many USA DNS servers en route. DNS Servers depend on major site takedowns NOT occurring and no Non-USA DNS can risk the IP address database being corrupted by ad hoc takedowns across the USA. Non-USA DNS servers CANNOT be ordered to takedown ANY IP address by USA jurisdiction.

If any American senator wants the USA to be effectively cut off from the non-USA WWW and any cloud facilities in the USA only owned by huge USA mega-conglomerate corporations, charging the Earth for these facilities and ensuring no copyright material whatsoever is stored there, they will be condemning the USA to a TOTALLY CRIPPLED ECONOMY. Many small sites have already said that if SOPA goes ahead they will HAVE TO SHUT DOWN. The reality is that NO site in the USA is safe from takedown requests. As said SOPA would mean the END OF THE WorldWide INTERNET to all intents and purposes as far as the USA is concerned. The USA internet would be locked down as tightly or tighter than China's! No non-USA internet routing company will support USA internet censorship.

This SOPA bill needs to be killed TOTALLY BIGTIME!

crackruckles avatarWhat i find very funny though is they are only going to remove the sites from the DNS servers but there are tons of browser plugins out there that log the IP address of the sites you go to and act as a local DNS anyway so as long as the site stays active people can still view it and all this is going to do is force people to get multiple domains form different hosts. Cant wait to see how the hackers will respond if this is allowed to happen.

No avatarThey would be chasing their tails as tens of thousands of mirror sites would appear, but the biggest problem of SOPA is that the USA would in effect be cut off from the rest of the world, so even if you have the IP address or try to use a non-USA DNS server from the USA, you might not even be able to access ANY site outside of the USA. Also with ALL USA IP addresses removed from non-USA servers, you still wouldn't have much luck, and the rest of the world would have no access to USA sites either! KILL SOPA NOW!

IrishTalian avatarI agree with everyone here completely!!! SOPA must burn and never be mentioned again! If they pass the bill, it would be catastrophic for citizens of the USA and also people trying to access US sites. I can't believe that they would even consider something so drastic and entirely asinine! Our government already has enough more serious issues that need to be addressed and resolved, not something like this.

I truly hate the US government and what they have done to this country over the last 15 years or so... it's sickening and just continues to get worst. It's almost as if we are going to be in a government that holds "absolute authority" over everything we do, not like they aren't already doing most things that way now, but you see where I'm going with this!
