A prominent Spanish author named Lucía Etxebarria has announced an abrupt end to her life as a writer because of the effects of ebook piracy. However, her decision proved controversial.
Lucía Etxebarria claimed during the interview that she would not publish any more of her writings for a while now because there were more unauthorized copies of her latest novel downloaded than those purchased legitimately.
Unlike most writers, and indeed content creators in general, who would hope to seek for financial compensation, the way how this author has turned her back on her profession has caused fierce debate about the role of content creators in our digital age where material can easily be accessed for free.
For instance, a backlash was immediately felt on Facebook, where the writer quickly shut down her account. In fact, Etxebarria is among the small percentage of authors who have been fortunate to make a good living, since Lucía has won the lucrative Planeta and Primavera awards, which gave her around £750,000 in prize money. Nevertheless, with the ever-increasing popularity of electronic books throughout the globe, as well as the ability to access the material for free, the debate over financial aspirations for writers has started again.
For example, sci-fi and fantasy writer Storm Constantine thinks that financial considerations shouldn’t take precedence a compulsion for authors, who write because it’s in their blood, because it’s what they do. The supporters of this point of view believe that if a writer is a true story teller, they couldn’t bear to give up writing – in fact, the only person they would hurt are themselves.

I was gonna say exactly what Storm Constantine stated.
Her quitting only shows she's a greedy lil puta that's all about the dinero and not about the amor of writing.

So you would spend your spare time writing for free?
I do. I also breath air...unlike in total recall...for free.
What about public libraries? People can go and get books for free anyway
if her dream was to be an author why would she care about the amount of money she makes money doesnt buy you happiness

that's justified, if people can't support her and buy the book legitimately then what's the need to write.
Yea money can't buy happiness but in todays' world money is the most important thing, without it you can't live, that's the absurd universal truth.
MONEY SPEAKS !
Unfortunately, once again, I must say that I am spanish; I hate this fu...ing country and everything that It has to do with It. And for those of you who are about to make a stupid opinion without knowing what's going down in this s..t hole, screw you.
Now that we have got that straight and going back to the article, that woman has been charged and
sentenced for plagiarizing other authors work. Fu...ing cunt; she can go to hell.

BS lie book selling been doing down for ages the last 40 year each year book selling gone down the drain they use it as exuses ffs why do they post lies ffs. total BS lie crap they know all know it .. not long ago i read a artical about the same they said its not do to thsoe fact. i cant make it into a artical reason that would be copy paste or rewrite the artical + im to lazy to copy paste in forum
That shows that the author doesn't have imagination to capitalize on new tehnologies/internet and availability. Some people have turned their businesses around, so that internet and in some way piracy actually helped them/work for them!
2 words describe her.
she is taking the stance just like many other companies and instead of changing their ways to adjust to what the consumer is after and changign with the times and maybe even outsmarting them, shes taken the same route...maybe worded as the "easy way out" to simply blame piracy. and this again is where i lose respect for any copyright holder that becomes greedy, lazy and wants an easy asnwer and will settle for blame it on the coonsumer that shares and buys.
she probably realized her books were not worth buying, and instead of making something people desire she quits.
just because people pirate ebooks doesn't mean they won't buy them. most people don't like to read several hundred page books sitting at the computer.
She is obviously wealthy enough to afford to retire, so why does anyone else care a hoot,as for her 'stated reason' WHAT A LOAD OF SHEER BUNKUM, OR NONSENSE!
absolutely retarded argument, this would NEVER stop a true author, she can go eat a bag of hotdawgs & leave the writing to ppl who actually write. A true author would be encouraged by the opportunity to have their words spread so easily. @fusseltier, that conclusion makes sense, prolly a realization.
IMMA GO PIRATE HER BOOK!!!!, so i can Print it and Take a Big Dump on it...
If she didnt want pirators then she Shouldn't sale it online...
I can go to the Flea market and get the books Bootleg there too ON PAPER!!! 50 Cent all day...

2012 not 1980
thats a big pile of doo doo...i write too and a true writer doesnt give a shit about the money...its all about the ppl apreciating ur work...the feeling u get when u see ppl like ur work cant be bought
If she was a REAL author she would still write; but she is only into it for the money.
She whined due to all the illegal downloads she wasn't going to waste three years of there life to write a book?
It takes her THREE YEARS.. jeez..
Wonder why they are downloaded? At a cost of 20 Euros and much much more for a hardcover book it is no wonder.
Check this amazon link and you will see; Jeez some of them are priced at $118.00
damn thats some expensive toilet paper right there xD
Complete BS. She just is greedy and writes for money, and not for enjoyment. Now unlike most people, I do understand you need money to live but just don't sell your book online. Sure, you wont get e-sales but you will ensure people got to buy the actual paper. Shows how greedy she is though and I hope everyone just downloads her books now for free lol. Also at menahunie, that link was crazy and like you said, no wonder people were downloading them for free, that is a ridiculous price for books. Hope she enjoys the broke life, and also we all know that she will go broke and have to write again but she just destroyed how people look at her so good luck with that!

Wow, the lot of you freebee head just stfu lol. When you waste time, ANY TIME, creating a 'product' to 'market' you expect to get 'paid', if you don't then (in this world, and in this day and age) your an idiot.
If one book should be free ALL books should be free, ALL. Would you buy a book if you could get it online for free? lol no, meaning in less than 5 years there would be no more book shops, not 1. That would first and foremost be a hell of a lot of people out of work lol, and the amount of new books coming out would plummet.
Nothing is for free in this world kiddies, understand that, nothing, and asking someone to waste even 10 minutes of their time for NOTHING is absolutely insane.
I don't really care about this crazy Spanish woman, just reading your ridiculous comments, you want this womans work you pay for it just like you pay anyone else for their work.
Now that said....I would never, Never pay for an Ebook lol, though you have to understand where she is coming from she probably just made this new book, countless late nights puttin it together, then a week after launch logs into a torrent site and sees 10,000 possible customers downloaded her book for nothing. I'd be pissed.
and 750k is not rich, after a decent house/car and a womans wardrobe that is gone LOL you people on welfare and pocket money don't understand that, 750k aint shit. and her personal bank is irrelevant.
If 1 book is for free then ALL books should be for free, or maybe there should be a limit to how much money can be made off something before it is to be sold for free, like movies, music etc, I think the idea of owning anything like that forever, and further making money from it forever is absolutely absurd.
That is all.
