The Samaritan intentions of people can be malignantly misused by sly people.
Usually the trends of such aftermath as the tragedy of Haiti, whenever a disaster of such magnitude happens, people who cannot be physically there to help in every possible way, have the intense urge to help in any means possible.
Usually the easiest and fastest means is financial help. The fastest one would confirm to be online transaction.
That is the catch!
Phishers are like foxes waiting with their fake humanitarian baits for genuinely concerned benevolents to extend their help to those in dire need.
And there they attacked. The extended hand is snatched and chopped off!! Grafficaly cruel? What less cruel are the phishers doing than robbing the whole from someone who has offered to be of some assistance?
The observed fact is that within 24-48 hours of such calamities, the human slyness surfaces. Online robbers, as they have to be called , start sending spam and email asking for donations through online transaction or transfers. These online criminals diverts the transactions to other poisoned sites and their gala starts while those in need remains in their deplorable state and those wanting to help join the same state mentally.
The FBI as well as Symantec has issued warning and sent some first time tips to caution internet users and donors.
Even social networking sites like Twitter and Face Book users could be steered into malicious sites where personal details could be obtained and misused.
The vulnerability of people at such situations incite the criminals to plan their attack and draw the most of this situation to their advantage and filling in their banks accounts, making them rich at the expense of others.
If any foul play is sensed in any kind of email or spam sent, users are requested to log on to the site Internet Crime Complaint Center, which is the FBI notification website.
The conclusion is not only to avoid fraud but also to maintain and see that the amounted transferred land in the laps of those who need it desperately. The money sent has to be made use in the intention sent, that is a token to help rebuild a destroyed life and psychologically assure the affected that he is not alone, but the world is standing to be of help to him

The thing to do is NEVER give to a charity, unless you know where the money goes. The best thing to do is to give to United Way or the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. These are all trusted charities who must account to the government and the public for where the money is used. Red Cross goes to ALL disasters worldwide. United Way helps with famine, disease, research and such all over the world. Salvation Army helps homeless and hopeless families everywhere. If you are the average person and give to those charities you will have done your part. If you are rich or powerful enough to do the research involved in finding more specific charities then do so because you can afford it. The average person can't afford to look into countless charities looking for one thats not a rip off so stick with whats known. You wont get ripped off and those important charitable dollars will go where they are NEEDED!! Regardless NEVER NEVER send money to an anonymous charity, online or not. Unless of course, you are giving a few cents to some coin drop and don't really care where it goes.
Am I the only one that thought this was going to be about the band Phish.
I saw on the news if you donate money to any humanitarian group going to or are in Haiti with a credit card or bank cards the banks are charging a 3% surcharge to any donation.Thats messed up they already make money off the interest now they add a surcharge when you donate and they call us pirates.

You can throw a trillion dollars Haiti's way and it won't solve anything. Sure some more people may get to live than others, but according to their religious beliefs, namely voodoo, or santeria a branch of Catholicism life is but a fickle thing and there is no need to plan for the future because there might not be one. To put this into perspective just take a look at their neighbors, Dominican Republic. These two countries have the same environments and resources and on DR's side you have business and trees and just across the border, Haiti, you have squalor and desolation. Why do you think that is? Do you think money is the answer? If you do then consider this. In a couple weeks the situation for emergency relief will have been satisfied and then up and away goes all of the help. Now what? They are still going to be without doctors, schools, jobs, and resources to sustain themselves. Since the colonial Dutch this country has seen slavery, despotism, nepotism, and overall abuse of power (corruption). Per capita they have the least amount of government buildings in the world. This means schools, police stations, courthouses, post offices, basic services we in the developed world take for granted. So go ahead pony up. Give them more money, exascerbate their conditions all under the guise that you are doing the humane thing.

Good article SaM - thanks! Giving to charity is something that is supposed to make you feel as though you are making a difference and all too often when you are stung like this people just don't donate in the future. I agree with carolina - try as much as possible to donate to a government accredited agency who has to account for where the money goes.
Talking about fake emails - there is one going around using USPS as their email tag. You have to unzip a file to get your tracking info and it launches a virus on your computer. I was expecting an article so I went straight to the USPS site (typed the URL into the address bar myself) and the tracking number did not work. I rang USPS and they said that there is a fake email going around at present. If you get the email just delete it!
Everyone one who downloads from any torrent site is a thief, just being honest.
THX SaM THEY ARE ALL SCUM
It's really harsh world out there. Better be careful. Thanks for the heads up SaM.
As for the people who are cruel enough to use such calamities to their advantage in mission to get their fat asses fatter, I pity your lack of humanity. No, actually I think I want all those bastards to go bankrupt and be pushed out to the street.
I seriously hope that all Haitians who are affected by the disaster to be able to stand up again on their feet as soon as possible.
This reminds me of my cousin and that unknown numbered phone call that he got by a guy introduced himself as a psychic, a black magician or something like that. and he got my cousin responding and talking freely about his problems with an opened heart by his convincing and nice talking - and he used a scary voice with weird accent. At the end of the conversation the guy claimed that if he "my cousin" wanted any kind of his problems to be vanished, all what he "my cousin" has to do is joining a group who pays $100 monthly or $250 annually -it's optional-.
Fortunately, my cousin came to talk to me and decided to go with the annually payment as it was a win-win matter (daaah).. But, I woke him up to what is going on and he stepped back.. - imagine how many people went with the annual option -
These kind of frauds were created way back before the internet came to our world. They used the appearance, the attitude, the place, the time, the way to talk, the victim's identity, phones as tools to lure their prey..
These people are professionals.
And the funny thing is internet made it easy for these deceivers to drop these tools because internet made it less costly and less risky.
If we wanted to protect the people, we have to worn them and awaken them starting with our families and friends.
Thanx SaM... It's really a great article.
I understand that Michael Jackson has come back from the grave and agreed to put on a one time only benefit concert that will take place at an undisclosed location and be simultaneously aired on a Pay Per View internet site where people can pay $150.00 to see it! All the proceeds will go directly to an overseas bank account responsible for channeling all funds to The Haitian Relief Organization.
I would encourage all bleeding heart do gooder who can't or won't be bothered to first contribute to looking after their own people right here in the good ole USA to visit the site and reserve your spot today. This is slated to be the biggest internet even in the entire world's history and should teach everyone who hasn't already learned it a most valuable lesson! A Fool And His Money Are Soon Parted!!!!
