Peter Jackson is outraged by the leak of his latest film "The Lovely Bones." He fears that the leak of the movie will hinder its earning capacity.
Having seen the movie, as many of you have, I don't think it will be the P2P community that will make this movie a box office failure. Several factors will lead to its less than spectacular return on investment.

01_jackson_lg.jpg

The biggest thing being that although the film is good, it is not a great film. No "Lord of the Rings" for sure. The film is good, don't get me wrong. Saoirse Ronan does a great job and the casting of her as Susie Salmon was spot on. She carries the film. The role of George Harvey played by Stanley Tucci stands out as well. Not much else to say though. Wahlberg was dry and his emotions seemed forced. And not sure what Sarandon was trying to do, she seemed just way over the top.

Secondly the murder and rape of children (yes rape...read the book) is just not something we enjoy to think about. It tugs at our heart strings, we are touched and walk away feeling somewhat sick to our stomach then we try to forget about it. In this economy I know I would rather spend my money being swept away to an alien planet and visually wowed rather than feeling the anxiety and fear of a child’s rape and murder. And yes I realize that is not what the film is about. But it is still there.

Thirdly is the budget: 100 Million. When compared to other movies that are tear jerkers this is rather high. The combined estimated budgets of The Road (20 mil), The Blind Side (29 mil and Precious (10 mil) was only 59 Million. Yes, the Road has not faired well but I think that is due to the bleak economy right now; whereas the Blind side and Precious have both faired very well.

One of the most anticipated movies of 2009, "Where the Wild Things Are", had an estimated budget of 100 million as well. Since its release in October it has only earned 87 Million Worldwide. It will need to earn another 13 Million in DVD Sales just to break even.

So in conclusion Peter Jackson should not blame the P2P community when the movie does not match the profit margin of LOTR. He should blame himself. High production cost, questionable casting and poor editing will lead to the less than spectacular performance of the movie. Not a handful of people who have seen the movie via the Internet.

DR_CHONGO avatarI agree totally it was a good movie yet not great. It doesnt hold up to the book. Also 100 million to make this movie alittle high in my opinion. Im sure the P2P community will receive some of the blame for it's failure. Thats assuming that the movie does less then stellar. What hollywood fails to understand is with movies, like star trek one of the most pirate movies of 2009 it still grossed $384,953,778 (worldwide). I believe that the P2P community merely adds to the success of a film not it's failure.

Nodurxshn avatari think while peter jackson was chuggin frodo sauce he let this flick slip..could have been great but even the CGI felt a little less than studio quality ..the film had its ups and was pretty entertaining but not memorable ..this film dealing with child murder and rape felt too comfortable ..a movie dealing with these kinds of things should really be an uneasy movie to watch and even harder to stomach but i felt really desensitized by it ..this was disney porn ..i think peter assumed because he did so well with turning J.R.R. tolkien's books to blockbuster flix he thought he would try it again with alice sebolds "the lovely bones" and after he watched the final cut in a panic realizing everyone was gonna see he failed after letting marky mark without the funky bunch get cast in the film he leaked the movie himself to save face ..WTF so im supposed to believe peter jackson never watched "The Happening" ..still anyone with a netflix account could have told him it was a bad move.

jenga122 avatarI think all of you are nuts. I think it was an excellent film with very good cinematography. I think the reason it won't do good in theatres now is because people don't want to spend $50 on a date that is going to make you feel bad. This is the time for action and comedies in my opinion. If people want to feel bad, they will stay home and watch the news or their financial portfolio. Once this film is nominated for best picture, it will bring more out to see it. It will have the Slumdog affect if it actually wins, which I don't see happening.

Nodurxshn avatarwell not just the road i can think of thousands of movies that are better than this ..not that bones was a bad film just could have been better had various things been changed ..actors..script..better CGI etc ..it is def not a strong follow up to LOTR..and to #7 can you seriously be that ignorant ...how about your nuts and the rest of us are not givin blowies for beans!

MarcusVenture avatarP2P is turning out to be the "fall guy" of the Hollywood boneheads! If a movie performs badly its P2P. Not the marketing department or the Director or the content itself or any other numerous factors that have killed movies since the beginning of films at the Box Office.

I find it a pathetic attempt at pre-damage-control so that Mr Peter Jackasson will not receive any of the criticism if the movie does not make a BILLION dollars on opening weekend.

This film is simply not the type of film that breaks records like a Spider-man or LOTR's trilogy and from the reported cost of the film it looks like Jackasson let the budget run wild, over spent and is now launching a preemptive strike on P2P to cover his buttocks. PATHETIC!

How about this, the NEXT time one of his films blow the doors off the box office why not THANK P2P for making that happen???!!! Over and over movies that have been released on P2P went on to gross hundreds of millions of $$$ and NEVER do the Hollywood bullies thanks the P2P community for free publicity through WORD OF MOUTH. If a movie is BAD then the word of mouth publicity the P2P crowd is responsible for will kill the sales stream but who's fault is that? The P2P people did not make a junky movie!!! The P2P crowd may save many people from seeing stupid crap that will turn them off from going out to the movies! P2P may have actually SAVED Hollywood! How about that Mr. Jackasson!!!??? I EXPECT an apology!!!

carolina avatarSee Pirates and P2P services everywhere DO have a reason for being!!!! We are here to provide a vital service to the entertainment industry. If you don't make enough money to cover OUTRAGEOUS production cost compared to what a film is ACTUALLY worth in revenue, just blame P2P!!!! There ya go case solved, blame averted and scapegoats ready for fleecing. Just sue em and make MORE money in scare tactics and court awards than you would if you had actually used your production money to make a GOOD movie!!!

No avatarOkay movie was okay, i say okay. All i have been hearing is how pissed everyone is about how she (her ghost) has a chance to reveal where her body is and instead decides to kiss some guy ! give me a break. it would have been better to see closer for the parents but now they will never know if she is even dead, i know its an obvious conclusion but it makes a feel bad movie feel a little better in a feel bad world. And all the after life shots we had to sit through! give me a break. Word is spreading out about this and i am sure it will not fair well here. You want a good girl dies, parents morn, mystery, ghostly movie, try Lake Mungo, it is my best movie pic for 2009. Love reading all your comments, all of you are great !!!

Infectious avatarPersonally I thought it was a good movie but,I think it is so far into the "fantasy"aspect of life, death, and the after-life,that it's just not going to be accepted by the general public on a large scale.I think alot of people will get lost by all the visuals and loose sight of the story, especially the people that tend to go for more of the "straight laced"types of film.On a personal note I really enjoyed it:)but if it does'nt live up to big peter's expectations I suppose we'll be the fall guy's huh?LoL(I just wanted to say big peter)

messiahx4ever avatarLook what happened with King Kong, subpar actors & acting i.e. Jack Black (except Kong, Naomi Watts, and Adrian Brody). Some of these factor into the development of these films and those of future ones because of how the hype marketing was done. Jackson ruined that movie HIMSELF because his ego got in the way of his ability to create a decent movie. The more a movie entertains a person, the more people will go see it. Imagine a remake of JAWS by Peter Jackson.

godchaser avatarI watched the movie as well and agree that while it was a good movie it wasn't great! I couldn't help thinking about a movie with similar landscapes and CGI effects that came out 10 or so years ago...."What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams! I've seen a bunch of movies lately where I felt almost assaulted with the immediate and sudden harm or death to a child....Antichrist, Gone Baby Gone, just to name two. Mark Wahlberg barely makes it as an action hero, I don't see drama as his forte`. I thought Stanley Tucci was creepy and Susan Sarandon was funny and though a bit over the top offered a bit of light to another wise dark struggling to be hopeful film!

No avatarto me peter jackson got so much smoke blown up his arse after lord of the rings he even started to believe his own hype, he has done some fantastic low budget classics and now its like he HAS to spend stupid money and overbearingly long films (the recent king kong movie being a fantasticly bad example of how not to remake a film and the make it as long as the 2 versions previous put together), personally i think that you could of made this movie for a quarter of the money, gone for less cutesy scenes and made it like the book which did have some touching scenes in it but was also quite a serious story about how a family deals with the murder of a loved one. ps before anyone corrects me there might be more versions of king kong but i m only aware of 3

conmac863 avatarThanks to all for the comments. It is really nice to read everyones thoughts.
I cannot find an exact amount for this film but from what I have seen PJ makes about 20 million per film. Wahlberg about 5 mil. Not sure if that is the case here but if it is there goes 25% of the estimated budget.
Interestingly Hugh Jackman was originally approached to play the dad. I think he may have been a better fit actually. He did a pretty good job in "The Fountain" IMHO.
p.s. all numbers have come from IMDB PRO and backed up (somewhat) by a little research.

No avatarThis movie sucks sucks sucks very very much! It has nothing to do with acting or the script. It was sadly Peter Jacksons fault. None of the scenes in heavan work at all. Every time the film switches to the heavan scenes it pulls the audience out of the film. If all of those scenes were cut, or reworked this film would be much better. Marky Mark was fine, and can hold his own on any big budget pick so stop blaming (your just a hater if you are). Peter Jackson has made one of the best zombie films ever made, as well as the LOTR trilogy, he'll be just fine.

No avatarI watched this movie online because I was soooo excited for it to come out. I loved the book, it really touches you, it pulls you through sooo many different emotions. I was still planning on going to see it in theatres, but after the Director being like that, and the movie being a big disappointment I will not. The movie was nothing compared to the book. I expected a lot from it and it fell way short. He missed most of the important parts, all he did was focus on the fathers struggles, no one elses and the actor chosen for the father fell short also. The sisters struggle in the book is one of the most touching parts and she was pretty much completely neglected aside from being the fathers accomplish. Very big let down. The Book will always be with me. The movie sadly not. Could have been great.
