Watching the wave of rebellion against anti-counterfeiting legislation in the United States, the Czech authorities took a decision that it wasn’t actually a great idea to ratify the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, better known as ACTA treaty.
Petr Necas, Czech Prime Minister, has announced that the country would still analyze the issue, but refused to ratify the controversial treaty. If one searches through the Czech press, they would find out that there has been a wave of protests against the long discussed international treaty. The hackers have joined the oppositions, as the papers mention a number of hackings. However, Petr Necas claimed that there was no way that the Czech government could allow the entertainment industry to get the power and restrict human freedoms and free access to sensitive information.
Necas explained that the government would have to go over the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and have it assessed by the industry experts in order to estimate the impact it would have in real life. The treaty is meant to set rules to improve the observance of copyright, as well as to fight against the spread of unauthorized copies and fakes of all sorts, including music and movie recordings, medicines, brand clothes, electronics, and other products that are usually faked.
Czech Prime Minister pointed out that there was never any question of the country’s authorities checking laptops and other devices on the borders, monitoring of online users, or filtering. However, many deputies have told the government that they couldn’t support the agreement, and anyway, it looks like the treaty might have a rough ride through the European Parliament too. Let’s see what will happen next.
