The Pirate Bay Will be Banned in Britain

Thanks to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which asked a judge to ban the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker, The Pirate Bay could well be blocked in the United Kingdom soon.

264pirates.jpg

A London judge has ruled that the largest P2P service in the world breaches copyright legislation on a large scale, and that both the service and its users are engaged in unauthorized sharing of copyrighted content like films and songs.

The local media claimed that the ruling by High Court Justice Arnold would clear the way for the country’s pro-copyright outfit to request all Internet service providers in the United Kingdom to block the website. The matter is that High Court Justice Arnold decided that the administrators of The Pirate Bay authorize consumers’ infringing acts of copying and communication to the public. The judge believes that the BitTorrent tracker operators go far beyond just enabling or assisting.

The head of the British Phonographic Industry, Geoff Taylor, claimed that the ruling would help clarify the legislation on online services blocking and it would now continue with its application to have The Pirate Bay blocked.

Actually, the case against the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker was laid open after the High Court ruled that a United Kingdom’s file-sharing service Newzbin2 was violating copyright on a large scale. This allowed the entertainment industry to attack Internet service providers in court and demand them to block access to other file-sharing services, including The Pirate Bay. However, it is starting to look like the entertainment industry might just score another hollow victory for which it is rightly renowned.

By the end of the current month, The Pirate Bay will no longer serve torrent files, instead shifting to magnet links. This will allow users download the original torrent file right from their peers. In addition, anyone willing to get access to The Pirate Bay is able to do so from any proxy. For instance, bans in Italy have appeared to have no effect on reducing torrent traffic.

At the moment, The Pirate Bay seems to be headless with the giant’s co-founders sent to jail and ordered to pay $6.3 million penalties. However, against an operation like that, the entertainment industry is largely powerless.

No avatarand it's begun. now corporations will run the internet as nothing more but a means to line their pockets. first pirate bay is banned, then youtube, then sites with information on animals because the words and pictures are infringing, and after that, the only internet that will be left will be something very close to itunes. you wan information on elephants? you type your search term, and list of options come up and you add them to your cart and pay.

JRPD avatarThe pirate bay is one of the best torrent sites ive used and since I live in the UK I will surely miss it, but I really don't see the point of banning it, with the amount of other torrent sites on the internet its pretty much just like cutting down one tree in the rainforest..

D4T4 avatarEveryone should be using a VPN anyway, free or otherwise. All they are doing in fact is educating the P2P community how to get around their Bullcrap. And of course they are forcing developers to find new ways, like Tribler. "Thanks to its decentralized design, this service can also be considered an invincible file-sharing application. The software designer explained that the only way to take this service down is to take the entire web down." Check out ET's article on it here... http://extratorrent.com/article/1955/tribler+is+fighting+with+copyright+holders.html At the end of the day these old farts will realise that they can't win and must come up with a viable business plan. The choice is theirs. We win they lose. Thanks Sam.

williebk avataryeah right, like they really think they can stop pirate bay in the UK. Any computer Greek can easily bypass UK blockage crap. There's nothing they can do to stop online piracy unless they shut the whole internet down.

And @FellAway, you need to learn more about computer history before you make lame amateur comments like "now corporations will run the internet" yeah right!

williebk avatar@D4T4, Good point you make.
Torrents are getting more created now, plus there are many other ways for P2P file-sharing. Anyone remember the old school FTP before torrents and file-sharing sites back in the 80's 90's? Duke Nukem days, LOL

No avatarF*** the judges, plenty of ways around ISP blocks, besides which as a matter of principle, all the major IPs will take this to the Courts, Appeal Courts and European Courts which will in any case delay any such block for years! There'll be mass rioting on the streets before long if the government don't stop this sort of S**t! There'll be absolute HELL about this!

No avatarBy banning these services and forcing you to sign up a pay to watch what you should be able to watch for free is the real crime.

I for one am tired of not being able to get tv over the air that they promised when they switched to digital tv. I can't watch one show without it going in and out and freezing up. So I have to now pay for free tv. I am paying for channels that are suppose to be free and channels I don't even want. I can't choose!!!! I say its time to make a stand and put the choice back in our hands.

If we all pick a month and stop paying for Cable and satellite tv and internet connection. The industry would wake up real fast. They are paying millions of dollar to the politician to make them tell us what is good for us. Well run the numbers just one month all at the same time would send a very loud message. Average person pays around $200 to watch tv and go on line. I am paying a cable company $80 dollars to get on line a month and I have to pay the same cable company another $100 plus a month to watch tv. Don't you see you are paying twice to the same companies. I don't know how much is paid each month, so even at 1 billion subscriptions a month worldwide at $100 per subscription just to round out the number is a staggering $100,000,000,000 billion dollars a month. I know that the figures are much higher but its already a very very big number. ( these number shown here are not based on any facts. I was trying to be conservative. The numbers could be much bigger or smaller. If anybody has the right figures I hope you can share them with us here.

They know that with super wifi coming that cities and towns will pay to have you hook up for free just to entice you to come and live there. The Cable and Sat. companies your are paying now to get on line will lose a lot of money in the next couple of years. That's why hulu and other are fighting to stay alive. The entertainment industry sold the rights to internet start ups at a very low price because they never thought people would use the internet to watch tv. Now they want it back before the next big change and are willing to take your rights away to accomplish this.

So you see why they are making sure you have no choice in the matter.

Because:
"Free internet for all is coming!!!!"

Tando avatarWell that just sucks TPB isnt anything special really other than its very well known, in my opinion anyways but still all this BS about blocking sites is just stupid the Internet is supposed to be for everyone with no restrictions

Its going to be a sad day when all the Torrent, Video streaming/sharing sites and anything else that has, fu*k any kind of information on it are blocked, heavely restricted or just shut down and there is no point in people say that the government/judges/companies/who ever cant do it because they can and they will eventualy.

And I know that there are lots of ways to get round the blocks I personaly dont know how to do never had the need so never learned but there is no way to get round a site that has been shut down like BTJunkies and a couple other sites no doubt, at least the the best of my knowledge lol.

I guess soon they will ban books in stores and libraries in case someone opens one and sees a few words or lines inside before they have actually paid for/borrowed it yet. I'm actually going to use TPB even MORE now just to piss off the feds/recording companies etc. Hmmmm, now what to d/load tonight...

No avatarThank you for your kind words LoonAssSea.
I just hope more people understand what is happening and who is actually controlling it. We are the ones paying them, it's about time we tell them what we want. Those in power sometimes forget, without us they have no power. They just need to be reminded from time to time. I just think that time is now!!! Before we lose our rights to an open and free society. Once they take away something the harder it is to get it back. It is much easier to defend what we have!!!

Tho I can feel your outrage at the situation,I do feel that your comments are a bit misguided,as for the first comment I have chosen,do you think that would really happen?? No all the cable companies would do is cut off your cable for non payment and put the cost up for others to make up the loss from the cut services.

Do you think these multinational companies are really interested in what the everyday consumer wants/says?? No they are only interested in your Bucks!! and making profit for themselves and shareholders.

"Those in power sometimes forget, without us they have no power." Well here's one of my favorite quotes - "There's no power without control" and it is a shame those in power have more control over the ordinary person than you will ever imagine or can deal with.

piracy will always continue in one form or another, the more they try to block it the more ways will be found to get around it,just getting nostalgic here remembering the good ole days of copying VHS tapes or recoding gigs on the old Walkman, the only thing that has changed since then is the easy of access to the material and the quality of the material had improve immensely

No avatarBig_A_Little_A, I do know the power of the almighty Corporations that you speak of. I am just trying to show that it been to long that the masses are being controlled like sheep. We forget that we do have the power for change, but people don't even get out and vote once a year, this is why we are in this situation. I hope one day we can start working together and make the changes we want as consumers. Its been a long time since anyone dared to stand up and say enough is enough.
I for one and I do believe other would pay for the same p2p torrent services if it was reasonable and everybody had access to the same material at the same time.
I was driven to this in 2 ways I am disabled from an accident and know the government think they don't have to give me my cost of living raise which I earned and then to add insult to injury my pension which I also earned decided to make a new ruling and they also said they will not be given any cost of living raises either. All because the President reported last year that there has been no cost of living increase in the last several years. I don't know where he got that figure from, but i don't see it. It use to cost $250 to fill my oil for heating 6 years ago. Now I have to burn wood to make ends meet because it cost over $1000 to fill my oil tank now (that's a 4 fold increase in my book). Electric went from $100 a month to over$ 300 and food cost have gone through the roof. I can go on. I don't even want to get into the cost of a new car or truck. That's a story for another time, but you get the picture.
Well I trying to ask the Satellite and cable company to lower my TV bill and they wouldn't. So I cancelled, I tried to look for alternatives online and found a lot of shows I use to watch available the next day, then all of a sudden they stopped that because they didn't want people to watch TV for free. Now I have to wait weeks or months to see an episode and sometime the entire season is not available at all.
So in closing Big_A_Little_A I see what your saying, but we have to start somewhere. If enough people cancel their cable or satellite services I can see it making a difference. Its making a difference now because if they were not scared of the pirating move, then they would have ignore it, but instead their trying to block it and change the laws to be able to turn off who ever they feel is a threat.
