A few weeks ago the press reported that The Pirate Bay expressed its intention to no longer support .torrent files and switch to exclusively magnet links. Now this decision came into action and the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker announced the end of an era.
The Pirate Bay officially announced that it isn’t going to give out links to .torrent files any longer, because it is recognized as just a waste of space and time now. Instead the team of developers are providing the users with Magnet links, as it is simpler for the service and no more hassle for users. Magnet links are claimed to be more resilient than .torrent files while using less bandwidth for users who want to mirror. In addition, thanks to the fact that the magnet links are just a hash, they can be found on every single torrent detail page, which means that nobody would know for sure whether you actually downloaded a file or not.
As a result, nobody would be able to block torrent files without blocking information within a webpage. Thus far, a number of countries have implemented very strict censorship tactics, while the rest, especially in the European Union, are slowly moving towards total filtering. That’s why The Pirate Bay has to do all it can in order to avoid their users ending up with less freedom.
Although there were a lot of complaints that The Pirate Bay was stopping with the torrent files, the service compared them with saying that Ferrari was no longer selling cars but instead switched to selling better cars. The Pirate Bay is doing the same, providing its users the best links. The users are also able to download individual files through magnets – all they should do is to wait until the metadata is fetched from the network.

This might be a 'noob' question, but can .torrent links be converted to .magnet links?
Also, can torrent clients (like uTorrent for example) create magnet links like they can create new torrents?
Any plans to do the same extratorrent ?
btjunkie IS DOWN NOW
the pirate bay says you can still upload torrents there as they have it set up to convert all torrent files in to magnets so nothing really changes

Ok confused a bit; what is a magnet link and how do i use utorrent to get a video and then Convert X to burn to a dvd no one has explained that; as far as i know i've never had utorrent use a magnet link can someone pm me explain - thanks
utorrent can already download magnet links by default. a magnet link is just a hash download to utorrent, which then downloads the files. works the same way with .torrent file, just that you wont actually find a .torrent file now. The problem is that I just usually download the .torrent files to a folder and throw then onto seed box in a group all at once. Now, have to individually load the magnet links into seed box which is more time consuming. 1337 is about to do the same thing.

@blazedhobo That's an issue for which I don't have an answer yet.
Pirate Bay has started providing the Info Hash for the "torrents" they list -- e.g., 301AA0BA95F9C8359D00927516609ACBE8FB7680.
Using that data you can download from a torrent storage site like torrage.com or torrage.ws or thehashden.org. uTorrent will initiate a standard download dialog that lets you select which files to grab, BUT ONLY IF that torrent was previously uploaded to one of those sites and you go to the right one.
I've been trying to do my part on this for many months. When I have something to upload, it goes here (ET) first, then TPB, then Demonoid, but only after first being uploaded to torrage.ws and thehashden.org. Once that's all done, I post on my blog (sebaygo1.blogspot.com) magnet links and torrage links. And in the top right corner are links to the "my torrents" page on each listing site. I want to do everything I can to make what I am uploading as readily available to anyone as I can.
But if someone has a solution to the picking files problem in uTorrent with magnet links, I would love to hear it.

@blazedhobo Well you can select the specific files in the latest utorrent i guess,
just give a couple of secs after you d/l magnet links and the contents of the torrent Magnetically appear lol, then u can select them as you want.
I think the older versoins of utorrent dont support it but not sure
check this post anyways
ty kuntu, it sucks that i can't have things queued as easily as normal tho. o well, i use et for 90% of my torrents anyways.
