Although LimeWire was shut down a couple years ago after the American courts decided that the service is responsible for copyright violation, the company is still good to pay.
As we can see, LimeWire’s financial nightmare still isn’t over. The RIAA appeared to be just a part of LimeWire’s nemesis, followed by the independent record labels who won another important fight against the now defunct service.
The settlement is evaluated between $5m and $10m, and is considered the biggest victory obtained by independent labels against piracy. Although this figure isn’t as impressive as that of the RIAA’s ($105m), it is still a victory. Meanwhile, the details of the settlement weren’t made public.
Merlin is a music rights agency fighting for independent artists like Adele and Arctic Monkeys labels. Its members’ market share in the United States is about10%, which means that the outfit basically represents the largest and most compelling basket of global independent rights worldwide. The LimeWire’s settlement proves both Merlin’s diligence in protecting its artists’ rights and the value of their labels’ repertoire. Earlier, Merlin also obtained a $3.6 million deal against American XM Satellite Radio.
The outfit’s CEO Charles Caldas added that the exclusion of independent labels from many major settlements like Kazaa was a reason to form Merlin, and now the organization is proud to say that this time its members’ rights have been properly protected. The outfit also admitted that it was very satisfying to announce this settlement and promised to continue doing whatever it can to make sure that the independent labels are never left out in the cases like that again.
As you know, LimeWire was launched back in 2000 and, along with Kazaa, Grokster, eDonkey and Napster, represented a very significant piece in the history of music file-sharing.
Meanwhile, Merlin is planning to facilitate legitimate business models, as well as to help independent artists increase their profits. Within the past years, the outfit has closed around 15 deals with such services as Spotify, Muve and Google Music. Hopefully, the organization is moving in the right direction and will try to implement innovative business models instead of stupidly suing everyone like the other anti-piracy outfits do.

maybe if the artist actually got more of the profit, people wouldnt feel as bad about downloading, but these days, no one cares.
as for shutting down the services, people are just moving to other service like utorrent and using vpns and seed boxes that are in foreign countries that they have no control over. so what they gonna do now? lol
drop the price of cd's to £1 uk and i might buy one but at £10 its just greed by music companys cd's cost far too much the same is true of dvd and blue ray ,and what idiot is going to pay for an x box or playstation game at £45
In reality the music companies make their money off of the cd's. The artists and or performers make all their real money from concerts and live performances. So that could be a reason we don't hear much from the poor income robbed artists. They are most likely laughing at the record companies all the way to the bank. Also they are going direct via internet distribution to their fans and cutting the record companies out of the gravy train loop.

i loved limewire F**ck the riaa
JizzFag your the one who is wrong ,,,the only thing man left out was tshirts stickers misc. merch as well as itunes that the artists do make bank and if you knew anything about being in a band and could play a power chord that wasn't blue green green red you would know that the real pirates are the record labels who a lot of musicians like myself are glad to see rcd labels lose their pimp status and not profit from others creative energies, or tell the masses through their selective PR what is liked and unliked,,,so instead of being a nay sayer and just booing in the audience,,,why don't you learn or create something and contribute by showing us how it's done then?
knowvella, if you don't like the way the record companies operate then don't sign the recording contract. you can just go back to uploading your "great" music on youtube, get 200 views at the most, and keep wishing to be famous. what a joke. I am in the music business and you're nothing but another self-labeled know-it-all.
Moronic_Jizzrag - being a janitor at a radio station does not mean you're in the music business. Surely you MUST be an adult and not a kid with a nickname like that lol...

Umm... Jizzrag could be the real deal coming to check everyone out and write down all our names and such.....
But in any case, it is public information that the avg music contract pays the preformers $23 on every $1000 sold.... that means the artist doesn't make anything off CD's compared to the label, producers and suppliers.... Artist that use the internet to freely give their music away, then ask for simple donations have proven that its a BETTER business model, because not only will people like myself donate to an artist directly for a good song, they have made more than selling CD's this way, proven fact, I will also tell my friends about it for free... and even attend their shows and buy their T-shirts when they come nearby me.... The Free advertisement is where they make BANK, you increase the number of people seeing your shows 10 Fold.... thus selling more tickets and merch....
