China Attacked from Abroad

Hacker attacks on China from abroad increased almost twice: from 5,000,000 in 2010 to 8,900,000 last year. Security experts assumed that China only has itself to blame for that.

A report, released by the country’s National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team and Coordination Centre, says that almost 12,000 foreign IP addresses were found to have hacked and controlled over 10,000 Chinese sites in 2011. More than 1,100 Chinese websites, including 404 of those that belong to the government, had been altered by the 3 most active attacking countries.

The top 3 included Japan, responsible for hosting 23% of the cyber attacks, the United States (20%) and the Republic of Korea (7% of intrusions). Meanwhile, the security experts claim that these attacks would get worse before getting better. They point out that China itself has been the king of hacker attacks for a while now. However, the latest report indicates that its rivals are taking a leaf out of the Chinese book and fighting it with its own weapons.

The industry observers agree that it was only a matter of time before the country’s rivals went for an attack, and perhaps China only has itself to blame for that. The country is said to have created the monster that was attacking its master. Despite the fact that a lot of the hacks from abroad have been to steal state secrets, the main part of them was carried out just to show the country that it isn’t the only one able to attack and cause havoc online. In addition, the rivals might have been carrying out heavier attacks just to show China that they can do it better.

Well, it’s not very good news for China to be hit harder than other countries. Indeed, although the country is good at attacking, it can hardly protect its websites. For example, there are a lot of holes in its government websites, presumably because China didn’t ever think of a chance to become victim to cyber attacks.

Although China had reached an agreement with 40 countries and 79 outfits to address hacker attacks, this doesn’t seem to be enough. Experts believe that the Chinese officials must go right back to the start and focus on protection instead of creating the next malicious program and partnerships. Meanwhile, the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has started a few investigations since last summer, and the Chinese authorities managed to prevent the spread of online viruses a dozen times in 2011.

They most certainly Focus on protecting the Worlds Largest Power Plant!
I am sure hacking a site inside china if you live there is a major risk?
