Microsoft has announced that it will finish work on Windows 8 by the end of this summer and will most likely launch the operating system in October.
According to media reports, Microsoft is expected to have both the x86 and the ARM editions ready simultaneously. Earlier, the reports were that Windows 8 would be ready by the end of July 2012. It seems that the marketeers want their paws on it in the run up to the launch.
So, there’ll be only 5 ARM devices in the release, compared with over forty Intel machines. However, taking into consideration the fact that the industry wasn’t expecting to see ARM hardware until much later, that wasn’t very surprising. In other words, Microsoft is going to target Christmas shoppers with the new software able to work with touch-screen electronic devices.
The industry experts pointed out that if Microsoft misses the fall time frame, the software giant is going to be stuck without having ability to ship anything in the current year. Indeed, the company needs a Windows tablet out there, able to compete with the Apple’s new iPad. Microsoft is planning to host an event for its industry partners early next month, where it will spell out its release strategy for the new operating system, providing more details on both timing and marketing.
Meanwhile, the industry experts have noticed that the developers seem to have less difficulty getting Windows 8 ready for x86, but it appeared harder to make it run on ARM. Meanwhile, Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows business, continues saying that the company is going to have both ARM and Intel-based systems available when the new operating system is released this fall.

What does "ARM" stand for?

so i m very happy and waiting for this 8
ARM = Advanced RISC Machine. ARM is a 32-bit reduced instruction set computer (RISC) instruction set architecture (ISA) developed by ARM Holdings.
Its a Microprocessor, usually used in low-processing, low-power Enviorments such as Hand-held gaming consoles, Cell-Phones, PDA's and Automation Equipment.
The "Arduino" platform is based off from the Arm2 Microprocessor. Its extremely Versitile, Although in most cases Extremely underpowered for today's users.
But Windows 8 is NOT finished!!! its just a Damn Metro UI on top of VISTA!!!!! DO SOME ACTUAL WORK TO IT!!!!!

Yes ARM is like Droid -
It's Microsofts OS version For Tablets, Phones . . .
Dubbed "Windows on ARM," or WOA
In other words, WOA is to Windows as iOS(iphone)is to Mac OS X
Kingtiger01 and RUkiddin - True.
BUT Microcrap 8 is even more weird. You setup a window live account - why? To log into the system.
It uses like the Droid a password picture or a series of dots you setup in a diagram to log in like my droid phone.
No start button; instead you have a START SCREEN. WTF..
Microcrap * is basically setup in an attempt not for the user but to operate on a wide range of hardware period.
So like from XP to VISTA you could not run your software; you have to wait for them to re write it and drivers for your hardware to work on Vista. Even Microcrap 7 same problem.
I can't even image what it will be like with Microcrap 8; will your games run; it won't on the system I tried it on.
I am not going to tear this OS apart; it violates the EULA and previous versions also if you do.
My impression is an attempt to use XP kernel with the gee whiz GUI changes only. Also a possible attempt to plagiarize the Droid OS..
You also have to remember you never buy Microcrap OS; you pay Hundreds of dollars for a license to only use it..

Windows 8, mainly due to Metro, is garbage. I feel sorry for the suckers that pirate it, much less pay for it.
They still haven't even fixed the way calibration profiles are handled I'll bet, total fail. Been broke for 10 years!
I played with Windows 8 for a week and HATED the interface and lack of accessibility in desktop mode to key system settings. Metro will and already is a failure for desktop use. I read an article at Maximum PC that interviewed one major vendor (I forget which one) who went on record saying they expect 8 to be a failure. People like us will hate it, but for the common man (ignorant user) they will be fine. They still have time to take the heaps of negative reviews out there and act on them. Feedback has been mostly negative on all tech forums. And contrary to Microsoft's statement that software that runs on 7 will run on 8, it is not true. I had several programs that would not run under 8.
I think I'm gonna stick with Win 7 for the foreseeable future. Win 8 sounds like it's a fricking mess.
