It seems that the Japanese judges have come down hard on the search giant’s auto-complete search function. The local press reported that a Tokyo District Court has approved a petition demanding that the search engine stop using its auto-complete feature.
Some Japanese individual claimed that the auto-complete feature breached his privacy. The matter was that the feature actually led to the loss of his job – it turned out that when typing in this guy’s name, the engine’s auto-complete suggested words associated with criminal behavior. If you click on those suggested searches, you will be able to find around 10,000 results that disparage or defame him.
Hiroyuki Tomita, the individual’s lawyer, has said during the interview that Google’s auto-complete feature is able to lead to job loss or bankruptcy simply by displaying search results constituting defamation.
Meanwhile, the industry observers point out that Google has really been having some problems with these kinds of cases. For example, back in 2011, when a UK citizen was falsely accused of being a pedophile in a Google Places review, the search engine had to pull it. But the UK wasn’t the only country that had problems with Google’s auto-complete. The company also had to give in to an Indian law that directed online corporations to block religiously offensive data from their search results.
In response, the search engine claimed that since Google is based in the United States, it shouldn’t be subject to Japanese legislation. It won’t be a surprise to many if Japan disagrees with this statement and succeeds with its request to kill auto-complete search function.

I agree killing the auto complete entirely is a bit much... however if people are loosing their jobs because their names are tied to all sorts of weird shit, google needs to sort that, you dont see any bad shit coming up about Larry Page.

And I quote "In response, the search engine claimed that since Google is based in the United States, it shouldn’t be subject to Japanese legislation.". However, according to the good ole US of A, it's OK to prosecute a Brit for TV Shack which isn't in the US neither. One rule for them and their rules for the rest of the world is it?
Great article. Thanks.
@D4T4.. I hear what you are saying but, you fail to make the distinction that Google asserted the defense of jurisdiction. Not the US of A. So, there is not a conflict of rules. I'm not saying that I agree with the Japanese efforts but, let's face it. Google is waaaay outta control when it comes to collecting your personal information. Perhaps the auto complete function is not a part of the collecting aspects but, if false reports are being displayed, people are loosing face, their jobs and more then, something really does need to be done. They cannot be permitted to allow just anything to appear on the web. They need to be responsible for what they allow. This is especially true if the content is false. JMO
yeah this article was good...this one's hard to call

@TechGeek2, No lets face it, the US is way outta control. I'm not having a pop at you but at your government. They will back Google all the way against Japan and indeed any other country on this one. I use Google quite happily because it's better the devil you know and can control. Check this software out, copy and paste: http://extratorrent.com/torrent/2633867/GoogleClean+3.7.109+Multilingual+%2B+Crack.html It stops Google reporting home!

OH GOD!! It's Pearl Harbor all over again!!!
Some Japanese individual claimed that the auto-complete feature breached his privacy.
What a frikin idiot; so auto complete breaches your privacy? LMFAO..
Loser has had way too much SAKE..
You would then have to remove this feature from all pc word processors, cell phones - smart ones used by stupid people, and anything that uses this feature...
YES even net browsers; yet THAT FEATURE CAN BE TURNED OFF.
I have mine off not because of privacy; it just annoys me that it pops up the damn-est words..

isn't auto complete just a feature built in to your Google account and stops working if you logged out?
but any way regarding a few comments posted: that's like trying to tell me if I live in the USA and take a trip to JAPAN that just because I don't live there I am not bound by JAPANS laws? LoL yes I am buddy! if you break a law in a country that you are just visiting you must stand trial there and in you country of origin, because you just broke there law and international laws. both governments will be after you. but regarding the auto complete I just don't see this happening.
@D4T4.. I'm honestly not so sure my Gov would back Google on this one. In fact, there is a current legislation pending that would severely limit the information Google can collect. I do agree the shut down of MegaUpload by the US was waaaay outta control. I don't necessarily agree with my Gov on many things but, when it comes to invading my privacy without my knowledge or consent, I get behind them to put a stop to it. In fact, just today on the news here there was a report of how Google is eaves dropping on peoples phone calls who use cell phones that have some Google app.. (can't remember what it was) but, Google claims they have a way to blot out the conversation and they only use the background noise to assist them in targeting you for advertisements. .. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.
