The largest movie studios and record labels are going to start a new weapon against piracy – the Center for Copyright Information. A number of American major Internet service providers will also join the fight.

Media reports are informing that a number of America’s most important broadband providers, including AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon, in cooperation with the creative industry, are going to launch the CCI (Center for Copyright Information), which is meant to assist in the effort to fight Internet piracy.

The CCI is headed by Jill Lesser – a managing director of lobbying and public policy company The Glover Park Group. She is also a member of the board at the Center for Democracy and Technology (a non-commercial group fighting for the freedom of speech on the worldwide web).

The biography of Jill Lesser can let us know that she has concentrated her efforts on copyright and consumer protection, coupled with telecommunications policy issues for her clients in the entertainment industry.

The task of Center for Copyright Information, among others, is to educate people about copyright legislation and the consequences of its violation. According to its idea, the administrators’ job will be to assess the viability of mitigation measures and the ability of entertainment outfits to identify online pirates. It will also have to promote the graduate response program to non-participating Internet service providers. Meanwhile, anti piracy experts insist that the “three-strikes” system (aka “graduated response”) is a very important instrument to stop piracy, and that broadband providers are the front line of the worldwide web. The Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America were the first to announce intention of launching Center for Copyright Information in July 2011.

The representatives of the creative industry explained that the Center for Copyright Information would also try to create a communication bridge between Internet service providers and the entertainment companies. Nevertheless, broadband providers are still too worried about their subscribers’ rights.

That’s why Jill Lesser’s job will now be to keep peace between broadband providers and the entertainment groups. It still remains to be seen whether this strategy will work or not.

English_Teacher avatarWe are not greedy. But the prices they set for their DVD's are unreasonable. Why should I pay 20$ for a two-hour movie?

If prices were lower, like 3$ per DVD then I would be happy to buy it. But at the current prices I would rather download it.

Tando avatarI can see this working a little but not all the way because most internet service providers are worried that if they go along with this they will just p!ss of there customers and end up losing half of them which will obviously make them lose a lot of there income.

#5 English_Teacher I dont think we are greedy either because you are right the cost of DVDs,CDs and Games are just stupid worse here in the UK then if a movie costs you $20 ours are £20 which is a little over $30

No avatarSo they call file sharing theft....So if my neighbor lets me borrow all his Blu-Ray movies to watch is it theft because he is sharing the movie with me? I watch it and I have seen it so I don't need to buy it...
Also what stops people from renting or borrowing movies and using PC software to make copies of them? This may stop some of it but the majority of it will continue through other methods that won't be able to be tracked.

OpenMinder avatarHere in Canada we really don't have much to be worried about; the investigative committee that is supposed to be investigating the Anonymous postings of our Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews (who supports Bill C-30 which will allow unfettered access to digital information on/of Canadian citizens, and refers to those who oppose it as being "on the side of child pornographers"...seriously his wording, multiple times) personal information online, well they seem stymied as to how to track down the IP address of said poster(s).

They keep deferring to another agency, claiming that they are only technical in expertise and are not able to offer advise or insight as to how to go about tracking such people, and this also includes the RCMP's computer crimes investigation division/unit/whatever (RCMP is our federal police force).

Brutal but still sadly hilarious.

I sleep well at night, I must say.

No avatarnr 21 you wont get me to say its gonna keep you 100% safe not even if you use a seedbox 2 if they want to get you they will get you no matter if using vpn + seedbox. but with a vpn your doing what you can to hide behind proxy with fake ip ect

No avatarthnx taker...to what extent are VPNs protection then? is it worth paying for a VPN service ?

23
posted by (2012-04-10 08:42:45)
Kuntu avatarFact is its a game hide n seek, n you cant hide forever.

VPN are best till the time they dont give out ur details, if they do you are in trouble, same goes with seedbox.

And im pretty sure if the federal agencies knock the doors of any of these service providers, they are bound to give out ur details. But then again its lot of procedures and paperwork to be followed and its gets harder if you are using these services from some other country.

Ex: if u use a proxy/vpn based in China, ur chances of gettin caught are less becoz US is not in good terms with them.

So it boils down to how serious the authorities are in catching pirates and the extent they are willing to go in ur part of the world. Bcoz my Govt doesnt give a sh!t, neither do I.

@suttercane5 So using a VPN/seedbox reduces your chances of getting caught, use a VPN which is not based in ur country.

No avatarseriously @ 15 explain why and how we are always one step ahead. you cant. we can accomplish anything as long as we know and understand what we are doing can be taken away at any time. once we understand this we can have real discussions about this topic. as long as (i know many many people have this attitude) we are making statements that hold no merit, worse believing said statements, we will have this taken away from us. to many people act like it's a right, and it's not. it's a loophole in the system, and they are trying to close it.

@ 18 how is letting ur friend borrow a blu-ray (or making a copy for urself) even remotely the same as letting 20,000 people borrow and make copies of it the same. its just not, and im sorry but thats a very bad analogy.

mike789 avatarWOW @29 ok I get the point of what you all said! but this is A new age! where A LOT of things do not matter to A lot of shares! like money! and the greed! most do not care for greed!

No avatari dont want to turn this into a back and fourth, but @ 30 yes your right about the greed and what not. only half right, and no offense thinking narrow instead of wide. i think taker mentioned this in a previous post we are just as greedy. think about how many times you see some one post get me this, get me that, where are the subs, don't post movies w/o subs, or whats taking so long for this. how many people would dl the dark knight right now if they saw it on this site even though they know its fake. we are just as greedy. its human nature. the thing is we want the movies now. we dont want to wait 4 months for the dvd. so they should release a bd dl the same day it goes into theaters for a fee. theres a website that is doing this for asain horror films in the best quality. i dont want to spam, but youll find it with a google search. i think this is the future. this is the one advantage they have. quality.
