Cyberlockers & VPNs Will Profit from Copyright Laws

In cooperation with all major American Internet service providers, the Motion Picture Association of America and Recording Industry Association of America will begin rolling out their new program aimed at warning and incriminating copyright infringers. However, no cause is without effect; and therefore file-hosting services and VPNs will experience a considerable increase in revenues.

Anti-Piracy-Laws-Will-Increase-The-Revenues-Of-Cyberlockers-And-VPNs.jpg

In a few months, rights owners, in cooperation with broadband providers, will begin tracing down online pirates. There’s nothing new here, as the industry was already doing this, except for the name the process is bearing now: “copyright alerts”. Basically, it is the same “graduated response” system that is meant to notify people that their Internet accounts are used for unauthorized downloading. However, this formalized process has more than 3 strikes: it features 6 steps. According to the new system, after 6 warnings Internet service providers have to apply a number of measures, which include the disconnection from the Internet for a certain period of time.

Most of the today’s file-sharers are aware of this danger and download through a proxy server or VPN, but some don’t bother to take precautions. As a result, the effectiveness of the system isn’t guaranteed.

For instance, the latest survey in France, which has implemented HADOPI a while ago, revealed that just 4% of the file-sharers stopped downloading infringing content. Instead, majority of the Internet users are now using proxy servers and VPNs to stay anonymous.

VPN owners confirmed that their user-base saw a huge increase in numbers in recent years, and they link this increase to news about copyright enforcement efforts. When the country enforces the new “six-strikes” regime, there will be no surprise if VPN and proxy services get their pockets filled by Internet users.

However, these companies won’t be the only ones to profit from the copyright law. Data hosting services will also see an increase in revenues. In fact, some of them have already outgrown the largest torrent websites. The matter is that anti-piracy law usually targets only P2P file-sharing. For instance, everyone knows that such cyberlockers as RapidShare or Hotfile are widely used to share copyrighted content.

Even though “six-strikes” will most probably take its toll, the experts predict that the percentage of users who will completely stop downloading unauthorized content is insignificant.

williebk avatarBunch of crap! They already try this several times before and it never worked. With the high unemployment rate, people could care less.

You really think the Internet service providers want to lose 1000's and 1000's of customers over file-sharing? Get real!

Plus, it's hard to prove, cause anyone could have their IP hack, snooped and capture.

No avatarLoL....I will just blame my isp, cause they can already freely access my router remotely via hardwired from there center or wireless from just about any location and with out my permission! so good luck putting the blame on me LoL.

and yes this is just some new scare tactic. funny its only in the US. or is this just a new way to get cloud computing more business? seams strange that MS new OS is based on this and to push ppl to use cloud services more the industry threatens users and so they are forced to seek remote services to protect them selves.

well the only other thing i can say is that time is almost up. and then it really wont matter. so we shall see how everything works out.

'Shrek' studio joins Wal-Mart disc-to-digital plan
From Associated Press
April 16, 2012 12:38 AM EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., the maker of "Shrek," ''Madagascar" and "Kung Fu Panda," is teaming up with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to help people convert their old DVDs into an online movie library.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks' chief executive, says that the new "Disc to Digital" service will help consumers adapt to technological change. The service launches Monday at Walmart stores nationwide.

DreamWorks joins five other participating studios: Viacom Inc.'s Paramount, Sony Corp., Comcast Corp.'s Universal, News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, and Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros.

Consumers who bring in physical DVDs and Blu-ray discs can pay $2 per disc to be able to access the movies through Wal-Mart's Vudu online movie service on computers, mobile devices, Internet-connected TVs and game consoles. To start, 4,000 titles are convertible.

dsl_bandit avatarFree VPN's suck big time and ALWAYS have. Anyone worth their salt here already utilizes one or another quality alternative. If you promote free VPN's over a quality paid service, you're showing your ignorance and true colors: living at home in mommy's basement watching re-runs of Star Trek all day in your Darth Vader underpants waiting for your mother to come down at noon to breast feed you.

menahunie avatarLooks like no one has gotten it yet?
VPN's are okay and are very very limited. As for being anonymous? Nope not really..
As soon as the VPN server is Hacked so to speak your IP is visible.
Also these so called IP hider programs don't work and gives a noob a false sense of security.
I will put money down script kiddies use a FREE vpn and if some are a littler dumber use only so IP Hider software..
The thing is YOU CAN NEVER HIDE OR CHANGE YOUR MODEM IP PROVIDED TO YOU BY YOUR ISP.. THEY CONTROL IT YOU DO NOT.
Even using Tor / Hot spot / Its Hidden and Ultra Surf

No avatarMeh..So if your ISP shuts off your internet for a specified time does that mean I don't have to pay for the time we don't have internet. You can't charge someone for a service during the time they are d/c.

I can see people changing ISP if they can and using VPN. Not sure if they can track on mIRC or not.
