According to Google head Sergey Brin, there were 3 biggest threats to online freedom, and they were Facebook, Apple, and the authorities that censored their citizens.
While Facebook, Apple, and the government would have a similar list featuring Google high on it, Sergey Brin continues to claim that the multinational corporation he listed and the government that try to filter their citizens are the largest threats to the Internet freedom.
During the interview to the local media, Sergey Brin explained that the rise of “restrictive” walled gardens like Apple and Facebook became a major threat as the companies tightly control the kind of software that can be released on their platforms. In fact, it was just as bad as the efforts of countries like China, Saudi Arabia or Iran to filter and restrict use of the worldwide web. Brin claimed that Facebook and Apple could both stifle innovation and balkanise the Internet, with a lot being lost, since that information is not crawlable by Internet crawlers and you can’t search it.
In the event that Facebook existed before Google, the search engine would have had no chance to survive, added Brin, because search engines require an open Internet, and too many rules not just close it down, but they stifle innovation. Meanwhile, Sergey Brin didn’t mention anything about Google’s Search plus Your World (SPYW) feature that mainly prioritizes Google+ over other social networks. In addition, the industry observers point out that Google has already banned Facebook from accessing Gmail contact information by changing the terms of service for its Google Contacts Data API in such a way that the sites which access Google Contacts had to offer access to their information in response.

just like the chinese old saying(translated liberally in general meaning):
"a bald guy laughs at a hairless monk"
Q: what happens if dog bites dog?
A: both got a full mouth of each other's fur
the governing officials can burn a bonfire anytime they want, but will not allow common people to light a candle
Q: how to use your 'point finger'?
A: just use it to point at others, never point at yourself
Not really fair comment, Google only banned Facebook from accessing Gmail contact after Facebook stopped them accessing Facebook information, Google for example has not stopped Linkedin.

This is the reason I do not use or own any APPLE products... I hate Itunes with a passion, and will not buy an Iphone.... To be fair I did buy a 4th Gen Ipod Touch for myself and my daughter... Mine was stolen, and Apple is so freakin stupid they refuse to track their devices GPS upon request... I had it for 3 months and I did like the MMI, but I prefer the customization of my Droid Razr Maxx much better.. along with my 47gigs of music/video/software that I am not forced to keep a copy of on my main computer for fear of the device syncing and wiping itself clean.....
BTW, before Facebook we had Myspace, before Myspace most people was on AOL... so where does he get that Facebook is the only service that Google could not search.... The only data on Facebook that Google would search is your personal info....

The irony of google complaining about the loss of freedom. Remember Google censored chinese search results then changed there minds. Try typing b0mb three times in a gmail and wait for the feds.
@ Brynn217 I feel you about itunes, real bloatware. Have you tried "Find my ipod"?

this is kind of silly...China and Iran are repressive goverments that have police forces and jail dissidents. The people are not free, and can't choose..when they restrict the net, they restrict the speech, and become tyranical.
Apple and Facebook are companies, they have no power what so ever to repress speech and expression, except on their sites. Which is what moderators do on every chat site and forum. Don't like it...DONT BUY IT...Apple makes kick ass hardware, and BA software...like their OS platforms. Yeah I tunes sux..but who really buys ipods anymore. smartphones killed the need for seperate equipment.
Also, it in no way stifles the net or tech progress...consider how many outstanding musci organizers are out there that are a TON better than itunes...media monkey for one...the people and our beloved nerds saw some BS applied ol American can do, and adapted and overcame. Nope, the only thing FB and Apple and google, and who ever is next after them, will do, is start their own decline, as consumers flock to the better service...happened to myspace and AOL!
|Well just to let you all know my cousin is a firm aol user he even uses the aol email! So aol is not gone it's just that some people don't use it anymore. I go on facebook from time to time but it isn't a necessity just something i use to pass the time away.||
