Jimmy Wales, known worldwide as the co-founder of the Internet non-commercial encyclopedia Wikipedia, has recently told Hollywood’s studios that they were doomed, but it wouldn’t be piracy that killed them, and nobody would care.
Jimmy Wales, during his speech at the Internet Society’s INET convention in Geneva, claimed that Hollywood would most likely follow the fate of Encyclopedia Britannica. The latter shut down its print operation in 2011 after selling only 3,000 copies a year before. Wikipedia’s founder predicted that Hollywood would be destroyed and nobody would even notice. However, according to Wales, it won’t be Wikipedia or Encarta that will kill the movie making industry. He pointed out that collaborative storytelling and movie making could do the same to Hollywood as Wikipedia did to Encyclopedia Britannica.
Highlighting the rapid progress of technology, the video and mastering editing software age we live in, gaining outstanding success – particularly in the youngest sectors of society, Wales brought up the fact that his own daughter was already adept at iMovie at her 12, and even won a local award for a short film she created.
Therefore, just as Wikipedia showed that collaboration on the Internet is possible, the young generation will easily find ways of entertaining themselves by cooperating online to make films. Moreover, their films will contain impressive special effects, CGI, and remote actors.
Movie industry may not take Wales’ predictions seriously, but even if they sound a little “futuristic”, you can never know what can really happen in dozen years. In fact, if that’s the case, the industry won’t even see the punch coming…

so piracy is going to have nothing to do with it. thats hard to belive. i think hollywood will die off like the idea of making money selling music singles without itunes and no one leaking it on the internet. combination of both think. cheers for the share sam

@5 "so piracy is going to have nothing to do with it. thats hard to belive."
Its not that hard to believe at all take The Avengers movie for example it broke a record making just over 200million in 3 days last week the last Harry Potter movie done the same making just over 200mill and no doubt the last Twilight and the new Hobbit movies will do very good on the opening weekends even though I think they are about the same time. granted if there was no piracy they probably would of done better but still...
But yeah I could see this bringing down Hollywood a good bit maybe not tomorrow but certainly soon.

Good point Tando. Just saying piracy may have some part to play in the downfall.
piracy for the most part is not a choice its the only alternative ..most people download because they wouldnt be spending the money on it in the first place either because they cant afford it or do not have the time...so i think that hollywood projected losses due to piracy is very exagerated...in my opinion the quality of movies has gone way way downhill each year we are force fed more and more remakes..sequels to remakes and other various material that is just so stupid its insulting. Like hte taxes people get tired of it and so for me piracy is the only way for me to rebel against a capitalist hollywood that cares more about the dollar than the quality of entertainment.
as far as avengers making 200 million in 3 days ..thats 50 million in ticket sales 150 million in popcorn sales
Y'know, I've never really viewed Wales as a particularly innovative or perceptive individual, but I'm not above giving credit where it's due, and his sentiments on this subject are very perceptive indeed. Point to Jimmy.

No way. I make my living in that industry and all I can say is he is totally clueless. The production costs keep going up, not down. It is getting more and more difficult for amateur film makers to get in, not easier. People want franchises, not innovation. A little girl could make a short film just as easily 70 years ago. All the ease of using of using iMovie tend to make it more easy to make crap, not anything good or marketable. Fail.

Here is my prediction....... Just like in the Music biz.. record sales have dropped,
now this does not mean that ticket sales will drop on movies, just rentals, and DVD/Blu-ray sales.
In music, a concert ticket has sky rocketed to ridicules prices, this might happen to movie tickets in the future
to make up for losses in the DVD/Blu-ray sales. I can see a movie ticket in the future going for $25 or $30,
maybe even higher. As the speed on the net continues to get faster, TV networks may even start seeing issues.
why do you think every other video you watch now online is starting to fill up with adds.?
The computer in the future is going to be your 1 stop place for everything, it is close to that now.
I can buy /order anything and have it shipped to my door, Movies, Music, TV, and now I have a free phone using google.
If I could just print money with it, it would be a perfect world.
