Facebook’s future is now looking less secure, because one of its key advertisers has just walked away from the service. General Motors has concluded that Facebook’s advertising didn’t have much impact on its potential clients and the company would be better off doing something else with the $40,000,000 it used to spend there. Perhaps, they decided that Desperate Housewife in the 4.30 at Derby may be a safer bet. The largest social network in the world, which is close to having a huge IPO, may compare the announcement of General Motors with a hole in the head.
General Motors is considered the 3rd-largest advertiser in the country, which is starting to express some doubts about whether advertising on the social network proves better than traditional media.
Meanwhile, analysts insist that while Facebook does position itself as one of the most important ad-supported media properties, no certain marketers are able to prove it really works. General Motors admitted that it will keep its Facebook pages which is free to create and for which it doesn’t pay anything, to market the company’s products.
At least, Ford is OK with the social network, saying in the interview that the company was really committed to advertising on the social network. Indeed, Ford is currently boosting its spending on Facebook advertising. Overall, Ford spends 20% of its marketing budget on digital and social media.
Internet advertising network Federated Media claimed in the interview that the social network needed to build relationships with the largest advertisers. Facebook might need to come up with customized advertising approach, even though its efforts would likely be not that profitable as traditional display or pay-per-click advertising.

No one with any brains is going to buy a brand new car because they seen an ad on Facebook....

Desperate Housewives is famous than facebook ?
Considering that GM sells more cars in China than in the US and China hates Facebook it would follow that the Chinese are behind this.
These comments above me are quite hilarious, there are many forms of advertisement for a reason, one form may not appeal to you but other forms do, not everyone is wired the same. The are many out there who really do for for it, I think they made a mistake personally, and to the guy who said people who buy FB stock are idiots, well their stock went up and they are making money, so how are they idiots?

Tony.. if you knew anything, you should start off with.. Whoever bought facebook stock today did make very much money if they made any..... The stock started on the NASDAQ at $42.?? a share... it got as high at $45.?? a share... and ended the first day at $38.23, which is .23 cents more then the first teir investors paid.. meaning if you bought the very first round and didn't sell because it never really doubled in price, you ended the day a loser....(BTW, the market is a secondary market.. stocks might say they open at $38, but you and I are usually the second, third or hundreth person who gets to buy it when you are first allowed too)
I can say tho.. that I am not sure what form of advertising works on me, but as for all these internet ads... I usually ignore them, or click them off immediately (expecially on FB, extratorrent and youtube..) Odds are if the ad is really annoying, I will refuse to buy the product just because their ads annoy me.... I already know what my next car and truck (one of each will be) American Made if nothing else... looking at a Camero and a GMC Sierra Hybrid Truck... umm.. lets see... if there is anything else I need to buy I usually research it, go to Newegg if its electronic (unless its a TV.. but the next TV will most likely be a Sharp Aquaous 60")... So with these things in mind... how is advertising gonna effect me?

i'm not gonna say i told you so.
@brynn... how did you decide on what car you want? Or what electronics you want? How did you come about newegg? It is through advertising in one way or another. You can say that you got the idea from a friend. But where did he get that from? Advertising is a way to make your product known. You may not know it but ads are everywhere and it does what it is supposed to do whether you ignore it (unless of course you block it and never see it). I do agree that I don't see how people make money in internet ads or how it affects consumers. But google/facebook and other sites are making money through the ads and those who pay for the ads are also making money otherwise google and facebook and other sites won't have enough money to offer their 'free' services.

@epiquestion facebook has only recently become profitable, and that is barely so. clearly they arent making money since GM just dropped their facebook advertising.
seriously when I want to buy a new car I wont fall for advertising lol its the biggest joke, a lot of neive people fall for advertising but honestly seeing a ad doesnt make me want to buy that car or truck over another. I would much rather go with test driving and what I like over what some ad says is the car?
@epiquestions honestly you can look at all the options has nothing to do with advertising a little 30 sec ad doesnt give you all the details of the car of your choice. I probly see like 20+ 30 sec car ads a day and it just annoys me most people I know dont even care about the ads they typicaly like one brand over the other and thats what they will buy without ads
It's liberal and lazy parents who ruin the efforts of all responsible, involved and conscientious parents. People just need to understand that all the "one bad apple"s absolutely will ruin it for all the good apples. What in the world would ever make a parent think a child has the ability, experience and wisdom to choose correctly at an inappropriate age. I see it all the time parents who argue the rights of their children to be online, on adult sites and scream about the adults who interact with them as "wrong" "perverted" or "criminal" all the time teaching their little prince or princess that rules do not apply to them. Who still wonders why this current generation of kids are out of control?
@Brynn217, well said. It may not happen today, might not be next year but Facebook will be the next My Space and fade away sooner or later and personally, I will be glad as hell when it does.
