|From day one since torrents have hit the web, spreading around so called "copyrighted materials", agencies such as the MPAA, RIAA, CRIA, BREIN, and other parasites have attempted to destroy the truth and fabricate reasons to end peer to peer file sharing. The lies that are spread by so called "advocates for change", are being brought front and center into this battle against our freedoms. These groups, have not only began to leech onto public and private torrents to gain IP addresses of "accused" file sharers, but have began to upload fake material by the masses.
This is nothing new, it's been happening for awhile, the fakes and bogus torrents being spread across the web. I cannot further state, how ridiculous and outrageous these methods are. Legally, it should not be allowed to be brought to the attention of the courts, and morally, it is lower than the anthills in your backyard. The only way to counter-act this attack on our basic liberties and freedoms, is to evolve, and take preventive measures to protect our privacy, because you sure in the hell do not have any chance of receiving a fair trial if you do not have the financial means to equal those pursuing you in court. Sadly this is the way the world turns.
I hear of trials and criminal indictments, brought against people for downloading what they "thought" was a copyrighted torrent, and them being pursued in court over this. The idiocracy of such a case, is stunning to me. For example, you were downloading a torrent, you THOUGHT was a movie, that is copyrighted, turns out, when it finishes, it's a fake torrent, uploaded by the scum hired by anti-piracy, to track your IP address. Well now, you get a letter in the mail, stating that action is going to be taken against you, for downloading a FAKE torrent, that you thought was copyrighted materials. Someone please explain to me how this makes sense, the torrent was a fake, so in fact, you DID NOT download copyrighted materials, but you are having legal or criminal action taken against you for it? Hmmm... Amazing.
The train of thought, that must be fantasized by those in Hollywood and their lackeys, sometimes reminds me of a plane, that takes off without refueling itself first, its a guaranteed crash course, but at the time they took off, it seemed like a good idea to them, for whatever reason. The utter lack of intelligence that drives these groups and agencies to make such decisions, is stunning at times. Sadly, they continue to win legal battles and criminal investigations, because money is what makes the world turn, and that's one thing they do have to support them, money.
Greed is the root of most if not all evil in the world. Greed, and not caring about your fellow man, is what keeps nations at war, and the paranoid people of this planet, making completely stupid decisions daily. For without greed, we would not have tyranny and destruction. If only someone could show these people the errors of their ways, then maybe, everyone would understand that sharing is in fact, caring. This seems unlikely, as more and more often we see such ridiculous criminal trials, and conspiracies against file sharers happening in our online world, and in reality.
A few tips to those trying to avoid the infamous ISP letters in the mail, protect yourself. Their are so many ways to keep yourself safe, and so much information available to you on how to do so. The overall best method of course, is to encrypt the entire internet, and all of the network traffic globally. This unfortunately, has yet to happen. So the next best thing for you, is to encrypt and tunnel your own connections, through a VPN, which can come at a cost to you
. Although there are freeware alternatives, such as, using ipfilter.dat for uTorrent, and PeerGuardian2, and other software, this is not a completely safe method, as the lists of IP addresses it prevents you from connecting to, would need a total update daily, and there is no way to be certain that anyone has the means to find all of the scum agencies at once. Although as I have said, any protection is better than no protection. Just like a condom, you may not get an STD while wearing it, but there is still that chance that you can get an unexpected visitor.
Although safety alone cannot end this pure violation of our rights and privacy, it is perhaps a step that most should consider taking, when delving into the world of torrents. Other means of tearing down the war plans of these agencies, is to get involved. Every nation that allows their citizens a role in the political process, can only blame themselves for the actions those in charge take. The internet is one major database of resources, inform yourselves of all the politicians you consider voting for. Research, find out whom they receive funding from, find out what their takes on technology are, and make an informed decision. If a candidate is accepting 50 Million in donations from "Dreamworks" then you can rest assured he/she plans to repay that donation with a "political favor".
These are not the only forms of action you can take, you can do probably the most important thing other than informing yourself, which is spreading your knowledge of events to others. Make your voices heard. Allow others whom are ill-informed and less tech-savvy, of the truth of the matters at hand. Alone you may not be able to make millions believe that the sky is green, but you may get a few to listen, and if they decide to pay that forward, they make get a few more. Communication is mankind's greatest tool against those whom wish to control and "reform" civilization into one giant obedient community. Use this tool to your advantage, and you may accomplish something.
Perhaps another great method of defense whilst downloading torrents, is to be weary of unknown trackers. If you see a tracker and you do not recognize it, research it, and if you fail to find any reasonable explanation for that tracker, then avoid that torrent, and report it to the staff at the site which you found it. Remember, staff cannot find all of these files, that is simply impossible, but you reporting it, can be a big advantage on our side in the war to keep the internet free. Some of use, on the administration side of things, will track these hostnames, and if in fact multiple host names trace to a singular or series of IP ranges, then you helped us identify a new cluster of fake torrents, infecting the internet.
These scare tactics used by agencies of anti-piracy, are merely that, scare tactics. The letters sent out by ISP's across the globe, do have some use though, for one, it makes great toilet paper, and it can even be used as a "happy pill". Do you have any idea of how good it feels to wipe your ass with a copyright infringement letter? Talk about an uplifting and mood changing experience, along with the pleasure of flushing it down the toilet afterwards. Better yet, you can mail that letter back to the ISP, which is sure to turn a few heads at their office. Along with not standing down when faced with these tactics of fear mongering, you, the internet file sharer, can also inform others of the torrents which you have received these letters on, and maybe, we can report a new range of IP's that are tracking a current popular torrent.
Another method, although used very seldom, is that, if you find a fake torrent, and it's uploaded by an anti-piracy agent, find the original uploader, and let site staff know about this. We can then attempt, although it may not go very far, to report them to the courts, and they can then be pursued for attempted copyright infringement. How great that would be, to hear a newscast, of a big time Hollywood company, accused of attempted illegal file sharing. That's sure to make a few CEO's spit out their morning coffee.
All in all, the internet is a great place, and file sharing is a tool that will continue to be used by the masses, every single day out of the year. This will never end, unless they completely censor the internet. I do not believe this is possible, although some in power would love to see it happen. You, the citizens of the many nations of the world, do in fact, decide which regimes and political parties are in control. You as consumers, can decide from which companies and organizations, you would like to purchase goods from, and by boycotting many companies engaged in such hideous activities as attempting to strip freedom from the internet, you are doing your part. Stay active. Stay informed. Inform others.

|That was a darn good read :) One of my personal top rules for staying safe in the torrent world aside from the billions of progs you can use is, downloading at ET from its trusted uploaders and staying away from every other wanna be, copy cat, junk dump, torrent site!! The best way to be safe is to KNOW what you are getting and who from!!! Just like anything else in life, when you are in a hurry or acting reckless or with out much thought, SHYT usually happens...and not for the better..Be safe, use your head and ALWAYS remember, if a torrent looks to good to be true it probably is!!!!|

|Great article OBS really great.|
It has bewildered me how these anti piracy agencies can up fake torrents and take people court for downloading copyrighted material when in fact there was none to begin with. My only thoughts on this (and bear with me on this) is that just like with child pornography (in no way am i comparing looking for child porn with looking for copyrighted material.) it is an offence to simply SEEK OUT the material rather than have it on my HDD.
Just my two cents.
|like gi joe said knowings half the battle thanks for this very informative article|
