A House Commerce Committee hearing on “The Future of Audio” was held a few days ago, where the RIAA, represented by its head Cary Sherman, was telling lawmakers how the industry has transformed its business model.
riaapirates.png

The Recording Industry Association of America claimed at the hearing that digital formats are currently responsible for over 50% of its revenues. The RIAA’s chairman also pointed out that physical CDs are now becoming obsolete and replaced by digital music. The latter has brought about $3.5 billion in revenues last year, which is around 20 times more than in 2004.

However, digital music was on the tide since P2P services appeared, like Napster, KaZaa and LimeWire, because they were all facilitating the free exchange of digital material. But today the entertainment industry seems to have started adapting to the digital age.

The RIAA also claimed that LimeWire’s “demise” had positive effect on digital sales. Most of the US citizens are familiar with LimeWire, which was the most famous P2P file-sharing service in the world. Within 3 years, since 2007 to 2010, about 67% of file-sharers on the Internet used LimeWire. By the end of October 2010, a federal court finally closed the service down for inducing mass copyright violation. According to the RIAA’s statistics, the very next month, digital music sales increased and they have remained higher ever since. Although LimeWire closure may not be the sole reason for improvement, it definitely wasn’t a coincidence: a few months ago, market research company NPD has published a survey revealing that over half of the people who had used LimeWire didn’t switch to another unauthorized music website to download their music after the LimeWire’s shutdown, all thanks to the availability of legitimate music download services.

Meanwhile, the RIAA claims to believe that the best and single most important anti-piracy strategy is still innovation. That’s why they promise to continue “experimenting” and working with their technology and Internet partners on user-friendly new business models.

Inarius avatarI also remember LW...Used it once and after a quick search it came up with more viruses and fake files than it did with real ones.

The RIAA are spewing out bs...The only thing LW was ever good at was....infecting your pc.

Seems to pay off...is what they would really like to say...unfortunately when you close one down, another one always takes its place so their fighting an impossible war haha.

fusseltier avatarswitzerland has the right idea, just like in the past, when industry fought cassette recorders, vcrs, scanners, etc... and the industry said they would/were losing money due to these things, it could not be substantiated that they actually were losing money.
and if you think about it, how can movies be making so much money, and one as bad as avatar be the highest grossing ever, and still lose money?
and its the same for music, they overpriced music for so long, that they still want to make the same type of profits now, even with the lack of talent and quality and the garbage being spewed out of the record companies... they don't want you to know what you are getting until after you spent your money and its too late.
they would be best to stop wasting their money fighting and make attempts ti use the technology to their benefit.

No avataronce again u fools miss the truth, thoes viruses are the experiments they proposed, there partners spew them into limewire etc... there is no new business model, there is no price reductions to accomodate the declining economy, no the prices go up, thoes who pay to play fund the new experiments and techonology and the hiring of "partners" to infiltrate the web and put viruses deep inside your virgin anuses, ppl need guns, so that when the politicians accept millions to ignore the will of the people and the constitution, the people can offer bullets aswell, moneys expensive lol... bullets are cheap.. for now. fight fire with fire, sooner or later the big fish will be gone the prices go up, and anyone that cant afford not to be a caveman will have corporate police slitting there throats or enslaving them. non racial slavery i mean, like good ol roman slavery where race creed whatever didnt matter, only salt and gold.

No avatarwe cant beat there money, every step they take cost them, every victory gives them $ 10 fold, when the government feared the largest standing force in the country...the armed people, the democracy functioned as it should. then the great disarming began first with propoganda etc, then the patriot act when the majority where disarmed etc.. now guns and fear of retribution are all in thehands of the government and thoes with the money, it used to be in the peoples hands. the only power left is money, and in a society built off of debt, the only ppl with money profess in taking it from others. kill em, gut em, and drag em through the streets to show the world how to allieviate itself of oppression but be careful, thoes with money are quick to point and shout terrorist, u dont wanna be a terrorist, you wanna be an american citizen.

If you're careful and really have a clue what you're downloading then you'll be virus free even without any antivirus programs

No avatarLoL stupid RIAA. the limewire software may not be updating to new versions and its NOT dead. "and it never was a service" it used the gnutella network and is still used by some. MORONS!

@$3.5 billion in revenues last year: they need to stop bitching about piracy with that kind of profit. they need to spend some of that and get them selves a REAL education and learn that's a increase in profits, NOT a loss.

and to the users that have bee scared in to buying music again, you all are just letting them win.

but ya it was loaded with all kinds of infecting files. I personally believe it was the RIAA who planted all them infections, as it never started out like that.

TheBlackMamba avatarLimewire was garbage...Kazaa...Bearshare...its all the same shit...if you have poor computer knowledge than its very easy to fuxx your computer up, its kind of common sense. RIAA, SOPPA etc...they will never completely stop piracy...its just all excuses so they can pocket more money, honestly who gives a damn... "WE CANT STOP THEM AND THEY CANT STOP US." #NUFF SAID

rebornawareness avatarUse EMULE it's great and I never got a single virus from it and got tons of files that I couldn't get on the net. Don't download exe files of course and be careful with rar files
Well said number 6 and 7 however it's sad to think that guns could be the best solution. I'm not against guns but... A new platform for mass communication or a common voice "for the people" so people could be heard is neccessary. Not heard by the elites who rule cause they could care less but heard by other citizens. Of course news TV and radio are the furthest thing possible from that. There is a large black hole where this technology or software or application of it is missing or used by the elites not us and is scripted and censored, almost completely. This is easily provable so don't even ask. Too many uneducated (or educated by the people who don't have our interests in mind, quite the opposite) is the problem. Best solution I can think of would be to make some DVDs of your message and hand em out with a note for people to do the same like a chain letter. Exponetially expanding it would be the first uncensored voice for the people since... maybe ever... but it would be tediously slow, unlike tv. which is there to program us not inform us.

chronicusprime avatarthe closing of LimeWire had no effect on me. i never liked it, only used it once or twice.

and i agree with #9-clamo...with $3.5 billion in revenues, they really need to stop complaining. i'm so tired of greedy corporations run by greedy people!! so disgusting...

No avatarLong since time the RIAA started using web-based business models instead of fighting the world!

What they particularly don't like is unsigned bands kicking out the middlemen! As for stopping free downloading, they haven't a hope in hell!!!!!

OpenMinder avatarI find it both hilarious and extremely disturbing that biased studies (such as those by the entertainment industry) are both presented and accepted as factual data/information.

RIAA is stuck with it's proverbial head in a place where the sun don't shine.

"..the best and single most important anti-piracy strategy is still innovation" is totally not true, as the best and single-most strategy is production of quality material at affordable prices for the masses.

Of course, this requires expenditure of resources; time, money, etc. and actually LISTENING to your customer base, as well as operating within a responsible-business framework.

That would be the "...best and single most important anti-piracy strategy" IMHO.

RIAA really should have happen to it what all other big, bloated, outdated companies which are no longer relevant have happen to them inevitably:

Break it up into smaller subsidiaries, preferably run and managed by the artists themselves, and run more efficiently, cost-effectively, blahblahblah.

Who can make this happen?

No avatarim not saying violence and guns are the best solution, im saying its the only solution that guarentees expedient results, time to put fear into the fear pushers, so they shut up and scale down. to be honest, the amount of violence and bloodshed need only be small, like columbine, when thoes heroes let the good kids go and shot all the bullies liers twists instigators and future 4ssholes of the world, everyone in the country go wiser, got nicer, if only for a few years, the bullies stopped bullying ppl stopped picking on eachother i witnessed this in school, everyone did, there messege was kept underwraps by the authorities, but the effect of there messege registered and was effective. words and messages and the voice of the ppl doesnt matter, the effect does, so go straight to the punch and leave the words out of it, everything thats needed to be said has already been said, once u put ur words into a gun and start speaking truthes, people will listen even if the messege is censored. they will go back themselves and read what was written and heed it to promote peace, and peace will follow, columbine: they used words too, getting beat up picked on socially attacked and isolated, they used words, but the teachers stood up for the jocks the star football athliets and the 4sshats that play the system, words didnt help them, bullets didnt either, but they knew that they could stillhelp others, they knew that once the deed was done the world would have no place for them, it wasnt about them, it was for others thats why the message was censored. because it reminds people the importance of equality that guns bring to the table. furthermore, the effect of the executions reminded ppl that there where other types of consequences for treading on people repeatedly untill there life has little meaning left. guns dont kill, 4ssholes get themselves killed by citizens with guns/

No avatarif ur a citizen, do your part, buy a gun, and if anyone asks tell them its to kill people that threaten my freedom life liberty and pursuit of happiness, because that is why it was written in the constinution, politicians who believe there own lies will tellyou that guns where for hunting and personal defence, but no its also to keep the government and thoes who influence the government in check. the ultimate checks and balance system ended with the armed people, it wasnt written it was just known, then they dilluded that and epmasized the 3 check system, but the 4th check still exists its us, USA is the sh!t everyone wants to be us thats why they hate us, but now we are letting them validate there hate for the US, because we let go of the leash on our government.
